The Effect of Trade Integration on Business Cycle Synchronization in East Asia

  • The paper aims to investigate the impact of trade integration on business cycle synchronization for the East Asian countries during 2005- 2017 based on the endogeneity hypothesis of Optimum Currency Area criteria. We test the determinants of business cycles by calculating bilateral trade, financial integration, and business cycle synchronization. Applying the system Generalized Method of Moments for dynamic panel data models, the results show that business cycle synchronization is highly associated with trade and financial integration. These findings confirm the endogeneity hypothesis that more trade integration will mitigate asymmetric shocks, and have a positive impact on the business cycle synchronization. The increased trade intensity and financial linkage lead to more correlated business cycles in East Asia. Apart from trade and financial integration, the trade structure differential, monetary policy similarity also influence the business cycle comovement. The significantly negative impact of trade structure differential on business cycle synchronization suggests that countries with less similar structures are more likely to undergo asymmetric shocks. The results also indicate that monetary policy matters for output comovement. This study recommends that the East Asian countries should focus on bilateral trade as well as financial integration with each other to reap benefits from the integration process.

Novel UWB Transceiver for WBAN Networks: A Study on AWGN Channels

  • A novel ultra-wideband (UWB) transceiver structure is presented to be used in wireless body area networks (WBANs). In the proposed structure, a data channel and a control channel are combined into a single transmission signal. In the signal, a modulation method mixing pulse position modulation and pulse amplitude modulation is proposed. A mathematical framework calculating the power spectrum density of the proposed pulse-based signal evaluates its coexistence with conventional radio systems. The transceiver structure is discussed, and the receiving performance is investigated in the additive white Gaussian noise channel. It is demonstrated that the proposed scheme is easier to match to the UWB emission mask than conventional UWB systems. The proposed scheme achieves the data rate requirement of WBAN; the logical control channel achieves better receiving performance than the logical data channel, which is useful for controlling and maintaining networks. The proposed scheme is also easy to implement.

  • The segmentation of moving object in video sequence is a core technique of intelligent image processing system such as video surveillance, traffic monitoring and human tracking. A typical method to segment a moving region from the background is the background subtraction. The steps of background subtraction involve calculating a reference image, subtracting new frame from reference image and then thresholding the subtracted result. One of famous background modeling is Gaussian mixture model (GMM). Even though the method is known efficient and exact, GMM suffers from a problem that includes false pixels in ROI (region of interest), specifically shadow pixels. These false pixels cause fail of the post-processing tasks such as tracking and object recognition. This paper presents a method for removing false pixels included in ROT. First, we subdivide a ROI by using shape characteristics of detected objects. Then, a method is proposed to classify pixels from using histogram characteristic and comparing difference of energy that converts the color value of pixel into grayscale value, in order to estimate whether the pixels belong to moving object area or shadow area. The method is applied to real video sequence and the performance is verified.

Face region detection algorithm of natural-image (자연 영상에서 얼굴영역 검출 알고리즘)

  • In this paper, we proposed a method for face region extraction by skin-color hue, saturation and facial feature extraction in natural images. The proposed algorithm is composed of lighting correction and face detection process. In the lighting correction step, performing correction function for a lighting change. The face detection process extracts the area of skin color by calculating Euclidian distances to the input images using as characteristic vectors color and chroma in 20 skin color sample images. Eye detection using C element in the CMY color model and mouth detection using Q element in the YIQ color model for extracted candidate areas. Face area detected based on human face knowledge for extracted candidate areas. When an experiment was conducted with 10 natural images of face as input images, the method showed a face detection rate of 100%.

  • Green Frame is a building frame system composed of precast concrete columns and beams. For the construction to run smoothly, the quantity of frames should be estimated in the planning phase and a plan on production of members should be established in connection with the overall work plan. The algorithm for calculation of the amount of forms used in Green Frame automatically estimates the quantity of forms using the design structure prepared in the design phase. The number and area of forms are calculated using the member size drawn from the structure design. Based on the quantity calculated, the type and area per form size are estimated to be used in preparing BOQ (Bill of Quantity). Thus, the time required for architectural planning and design can be shortened when the algorithm for calculation of the amount of forms is applied. This study is on the basic research of calculating the quantity of forms using the structure design and of the algorithm for calculation of the amount of forms used for production of composite PC members.

An Optimal COA Defuzzifier for a Fuzzy Logic controller (퍼지 논리 제어기를 위한 최적의 COA 비퍼지화기)

  • This paper proposes an optimal COA(Center Of Area) defuzzification method that improves the contr~lp erformance of a fuzzy logic controller. The defuzzification method incorporates both the membership values and the effective span of membership function6 in calculating a crisp value. An optimal effective span is determined automatically by the genetic algorithm thrqugh the training of some typical examples. Simulation of the proposed COA defuzzifier to the truck backer-upper control problem is presented and the control performance of the praposed COA defuzzifier outperforms that of the conventional COA defuzzifier by more than 20% in terms of ayerage tracing distance.

The Analysis of Indicators for Low Carbon Rural Village Planning by AHP (저탄소 농촌마을 계획지표의 AHP 분석)

  • The Purpose of this study is to calculate the importance of the indicators for low carbon rural village planning. We made two kinds of indicators for inland area and waterside area to consider regional disparities. To develop indicators, a draft of the indicators was estimated with collected research materials and 42 experts reviewed this draft three times with modified delphi technique to check the validity and revise the draft. As a result, the inland indicators were settled with 4 domains 8 items 20 indicators and the waterside indicators were 4 domains 8 items 22 indicators. And next, calculating the importance of each indicators is progressed by AHP, analytic hierarchy process. So 42 experts chose the best important indicator related to air conditioning and heating or agricultural spin off in two kinds of indicators. The final indicators will be used to realize low carbon rural village planning in future which the government is pushing forward with construction of six-hundred low carbon green village.

Survey Methods on Cancer Epidemic (암의 집단발병에 관한 역학조사방법)

  • The survey methods for confirming the epidemicity and identifying the possible causes of the cancer epidemic can be different from those for infectious diseases. The procedure for confirming whether the outbreak is epidemic or not is quite different. Household survey for identifying cancer cases and residents actually living at the area should be done. Hospital survey for medical record review should be performed to identify all cancer cases among the residents of the outbreak area and confirmig the final diagnoses of the cancer cases. Comparing the level of cancer incidence or mortality with other areas can be done by using Poisson distribution, or calculating SIR (Standard Incidence Ratio) from cumulative incidence rates. Case-control study can be conducted to identify the etiologic, factors of the cancer epidemic and to establish strategy for preventing further recurrence of the outbreak.

  • Eighteen biotite granites on Andong area and twenty seven igneous rocks(diorite, granite, andesite, rhyolite) on Yeosu area were tested to evaluate the correlations between the uniaxial compressive strength values, as determined by the standard uniaxial compression test, and the corresponding results of the ultrasonic velocity. The variability of test results for each test was evaluated by calculating the coefficient of determination or variation. Results indicate that strong correlations exist between the results of uniaxial compression vs the point load, Schmidt hammer and ultrasonic velocity test. The correlation equations for predicting compressive strength using different methods are presented along with their confidence limits. Ultrasonic velocity test used provide reliable estimates of compressive strength.

  • In this paper, trademark image retrieval system is proposed by using color information and shape information. We use the image for a color information by dividing into the area and extracting the area color distribution histogram. We use for the shape information by preprocessing of the boundary extraction, the centroid extraction, angular sampling etc. and calculating of the sum of the distance from the centroid to the boundary, the standard deviation, and the rate of long axis to short axis. In particular, centroid by using the angular sampling can extract feature and reduce the processing time. Users can perform searchs using the color and shape information, and also the two methods by mixing can be used by weighting.
