This study was designed to investigate the effect of dietary calcium and phosphate levels on calcium and bone metabolism in rats. The rats were divided into six groups and each of the groups was fed diets with different Ca/P ratios. The experimental periods were 5 weeks . There was no significant different difference in dietary intake, body weight gain, and organ weight among the groups with different calcium and phosphate intake levels. Fecal calcium excretion was not significantly different among the groups, but urinary calcium excretion was increased by the increase in Ca/P ratio. Fecal phosphate excretion was not different but urinary phosphate excretion was increased by the increase in dietary phosphate intake. There was no significant difference in serum alkaline phophatase activity and urinary hydroxyproline levels were not significantly different among the groups. The low calcium-high phosphate(0.25Ca-1.2% P) group showed the lowest total calcium content in femur and scapula. This may be due to it having the lowest Ca/P ratio among groups. The low calcium-high phosphate(0.2%Ca-1.2%P) group showed that mandible is almost lost and osteolyzed Harversian canal was expanded in femur. Results suggest that phosphate intake affects calcium and bone metabolism more with inadequate calcium nutrition that with adequate calcium intake. Thus , for normal bone growth and metabolism , adequate calcium intake and/or high Ca/P ratio are important.
Statement of problem. Nano-scale calcium-phosphate coating on the anodizing titanium surface using ion beam-assisted deposition (IBAD) has been recently introduced to improve the early osseointegration. However, not much is known about their surface characteristics that have influence on tissue-implant interaction. Purpose. This study was aimed to investigate microtopography, surface roughness, surface composition, and wettability of the titanium surface modified by the anodic oxidation and calcium phosphate coating using IBAD. Material and methods. Commercially pure titanium disks were used as substrates. The experiment was composed of four groups. Group MA surfaces represented machined surface. Group AN was anodized surface. Group CaP/AN was anodic oxidized and calcium phosphate coated surfaces. Group SLA surfaces were sandblasted and acid etched surfaces. The prepared titanium discs were examined as follows. The surface morphology of the discs was examined using SEM. The surface roughness was measured by a confocal laser scanning microscope. Phase components were analyzed using thin-film x-ray diffraction. Wettability analyses were performed by contact angle measurement with distilled water, formamide, bromonaphtalene and surface free energy calculation. Results. (1) The four groups showed specific microtopography respectively. Anodized and calcium phosphate coated specimens showed multiple micropores and tiny homogeneously distributed crystalline particles. (2) The order of surface roughness values were, from the lowest to the highest, machined group, anodized group, anodized and calcium phosphate deposited group, and sandblasted and acid etched group. (3) Anodized and calcium phosphate deposited group was found to have titanium and titanium anatase oxides and exhibited calcium phosphorous crystalline structures. (4) Surface wettability was increased in the order of calcium phosphate deposited group, machined group, anodized group, sandblasted and acid etched group. Conclusion. After ion beam-assisted deposition on anodized titanium, the microporous structure remained on the surface and many small calcium phosphorous crystals were formed on the porous surface. Nanoscale calcium phosphorous deposition induced roughness on the microporous surface but hydrophobicity was increased.

Calcium phosphate minerals are biologically important because of their application in the fields of orthopaedics and dentistry. Herein we have tried to synthesize calcium phosphate minerals from biowaste clam shells. A simple microwave method was used to synthesize a mixture of calcium phosphate minerals such as hydroxyapatite, tri-calcium phosphate, and monetite. The microwave induces vibration of the dipole ions in the reagent. The heating and rearrangement of ions and atoms occurs during the process. The phases obtained in the final powder were ascertained by X-ray diffraction; the morphology of each sample was checked using a scanning electron microscope. We were able to obtain a mixture of calcium phosphate minerals using the microwave method; the calcined powder showed a brick like morphology, which is different from the rod shape morphology of the hydroxyapatite obtained using the hydrothermal process.

The present study investigated a novel calcium hydroxide-coated dairy manure-derived biochar (Ca-BC) for adsorption of phosphate from water and dairy wastewater. The Ca-BC showed much higher adsorption of phosphate than that of dairy manure-derived biochar. The Ca-BC possessed mainly the calcium hydroxide and various functional groups resulting in high reactivity between phosphate and calcium hydroxide in the Ca-BC. The adsorption of phosphate onto Ca-BC followed pseudo-second order kinetic and Freundlich isotherm models indicating chemisorptive interaction occurred on energetically heterogeneous surface of Ca-BC. The maximum adsorption capacity of the Ca-BC was higher than those of iron oxide and zinc oxide-coated biochars, but lower than those of CaO- and MgO-coated biochars. However, the Ca-BC showed high reactivity per surface area for adsorption of phosphate indicating importance of surface functionalization of biochar. On the other hand, the adsorption of phosphate in dairy wastewater on Ca-BC was lower than that in water owing to competition between other anions in wastewater and phosphate. Overall, the Ca-BC would be a low cost and effective adsorbent for recovery of phosphate from water and wastewater.
This study aimed to determine the optimal ratio of natural calcium powders (oyster shell and egg shell calcium) as synthetic phosphate replacers in pork products. Ground pork samples were subjected to six treatments, as follows: control (-) (no phosphate added), control (+) (0.3% phosphate blend added), treatment 1 (0.5% oyster shell calcium powder added), treatment 2 (0.3% oyster shell calcium powder and 0.2% egg shell calcium powder added), treatment 3 (0.2% oyster shell calcium powder and 0.3% egg shell calcium powder added), and treatment 4 (0.5% egg shell calcium powder added). The addition of natural calcium powders resulted in an increase in the pH values of meat products, regardless of whether they were used individually or mixed. The highest cooking loss was observed (p<0.05) in the negative control samples, whereas the cooking loss in samples with natural calcium powder added was similar (p>0.05) to that in the positive control samples. CIE $L^*$ values decreased as the amount of added egg shell calcium powder increased. CIE $a^*$ values were higher (p<0.05) in samples containing natural calcium powder (treatments 1, 2, 3, and 4) than in the positive control. The combination of oyster shell calcium powder and egg shell powder (treatment 2 or 3) was effective for the improvement of textural properties of the pork products. The findings show that the combined use of 0.2% oyster shell calcium and 0.3% egg shell calcium should enable the replacement of synthetic phosphate in the production of cooked pork products with desirable qualities.

The phosphatic calcium compounds such as calcium hydrogen phosphate, bone ash, hydroxyapatite and
tricalcium phosphate were prepared using the high purity calcium hydroxide and calcium carbonate obtained from shell
resources. Calcium hydrogen phosphate had been prepared using the high purity calcium hydroxide and phosphoric acid
solution. Using the calcium hydrogen phosphate as a starting materials, bone ash have been prepared by solid state
reaction method and hydroxyapatite could be obtained by hydrothermal treatment method, respectively. The tricalcium
phosphate was prepared by the solid state reaction of a stoichiometic mixture of bone ash and high purity calcium
carbonate. In this paper, the optimal preparation process and conditions of phosphatic calcium compounds were established.
Calcium phosphate powders were successfully synthesized by using re-cycled eggshell and phosphoric acid. The crystallization behavior and powder morphologies of the synthesized powders were dependent on the starting condition of the eggshell, the mixing ratio and method of the eggshell and phosphoric acid, and calcination temperature. In general, $\beta$-tricalcium phosphate was stably synthesized at about $900^{\circ}C$ for 1h at each proper mixing ratio. And, the synthesized powders showed the similar microstructures to the morphology of original eggshell with uniform particle sizes. In this study, the calcium phosphate powders were synthesized with eggshell in various processing method. And their unique microstructures obtained from the eggshell were also. observed. The crystalline developments and microstructures of the synthesized powders were examined by X-ray diffractometer and scanning electron microscopy.
The purpose of this study was to prepare calcium phosphate cement [CPC] for use in artificial bone. Nano-crystalline calcium phosphate [CaP] was precipitated at $37^{\circ}C$ using highly active $Ca(OH)_2$ in DI water and an aqueous solution of $H_3PO_4$. From the XRD measurements, the nano-CaP powder was close to apatitic TCP phase and the powders fired at $800^{\circ}C$ showed a critical ${\beta}$-TCP phase. A mixture of one mole $CaCO_3$ and two moles di-calcium phosphate was calcined at $1100^{\circ}C$ to make a reference ${\beta}$-TCP material. The nano-CaP powders were added to the normal ${\beta}$-TCP matrix and fired at $900^{\circ}C$ to make a ${\beta}$-TCP block. The sintered block showed improved mechanical strength, which was caused by the solid state interaction between nano-CaP and normal ${\beta}$-TCP.
The Purpose of this article is to describe the biochemical properties and biological functions of several salivary proteins that possess the unusual properties of inhibiting spontaneous and secondary precipitation of calcium phosphate. This function is very important since human salivary secretion is supersaturated with respect to calcium phosphate. Biological function of statherin, proline rich protein (PRP) and histidine rich protein (HRP) is to inhibit precipitation of calcium phosphate in salivary glands, in the oral fluids, and onto tooth surfaces. The resulting supersaturated state of the salivary secretions contributes a protective and reparative environment which is important for the integrity of the tooth. Beneficial consequences of salivary supersaturation with respect to calcium phosphate are selectively expressed in the oral cavity- that is, protection is provided for the dental enamel-while undesirable consequences, for example, precipitation of calcium phosphates in the salivary glands and onto the teeth do not occur. Purification and structural characteristics of these proteins as well as clinical significance of functions of each protein will be discussed.
Calcium hydrogen phosphate was synthesized by reacting calcium chloride and sodium hydrogen phosphate solution in this study. It is well known that the particle size and yield o f calcium hydrogen phosphate produced is greatly affected by the synthetic conditions such as the reactant concentration, reaction temperature, reacting fine, mole ratio and drying temperature, etc. The purpose of this study is to investigate the optimum synthesis condition from the viewpoint of yield and sedimentation volume of the prepared calcium hydrogen phosphate powder according to a randomized complete block design proposed by G.E.P. Box and K.B. Wilson. It was found that the optimum synthetic conditions of calcium hydrogen phosphate were as follows: It was found that optirnum temperature range of reactant solutions was $28-38^{\circ}C$ and $32-42^{\circ}C$ respectively, on the viewpoint of yield and sedimentation volume. The optimum concentration range of reactant solutions was 5.5-10.0% and 6.9-7.4% respectively, on the viewpoint of yield and sedimentation volume. The optimum mole ratio of $CaCl_2$ to $Na_2HPO_4$ was in the range of 1.2-2.0 and the optimum reacting time range was 8.5-11.0 minutes. The optimum drying temperature range was $39-41^{\circ}C$ from the viewpoint of yield, but it was $39-43^{\circ}C$ on the basis of sedimentation volume. Crystallographic analysis to X-ray diffraction patterns of commercially available ecalcium hydrogen phosphate and calcium hydrogen phosphate samples prepared in this study suggested that all samples tested belonged to monoclinic crystal system characteristic of $CaHP0_4{\cdot}2H_20$ crystals.
