This study was conducted to determine biological characteristics of Acorus calamus L. angustatus by using aqueous, ethanol and methanol extracts from the leaves and the rhizomes of Acorus calamus L. angustatus plants. The highest total phenol contents were found in the extracts from the leaves of Acorus calamus L. angustatus ($68.4mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$) followed by rhizome ($49.3mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$). At $1,000mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ the free radical scavenging activity of 1, 1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl showed the highest activity in the extracts of the leaves and the rhizomes by 86.3% and 86.1%, respectively. Total flavonoid contents at $2,000mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ extracts showed the greatest amount in the aqueous leaf extracts ($61.1mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$), and the ethanol rhizome extracts ($15.4mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$). Nitrite radical scavenging activity at $2,000mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ was highest in the methanol extracts from leaves and rhizomes by 75.7% and 77.9%, respectively. Mushroom tyrosinase inhibition activity of leaves and rhizome from the Acorus calamus L. angustatus was very low, showing less than 1.3% regardless of the extract solvent, plant part, and concentration. These results indicated that methanol extracts from leaves exhibited higher biological activities than other extracts from rhizomes.
This study was conducted to determine firstly the composition of the essential oil from fresh changpo (Acorus calamus var. angustatus Bess) roots quantitatively and qualitatively by use of two internal standards, and secondly volatile compounds which are primarily responsible for the aroma of changpo roots. Simultaneous steam distillation and extraction method was used for essential oil extraction, and aroma extract dilution analysis (AEDA) and sniffing test by gas chromatography/olfactometry (GC/O) were used to detect the characteristic impact odorants. According to the instrumental analysis of changpo root essential oil, cis, trans-famesol (47.56 mg/kg of fresh wt), octanoic acid (23.73 mg/kg of fresh wt), trans-2-dodecenal (20.28 mg/kg of fresh wt) and trans, trans-farnesol (13.81 mg/kg of fresh wt) were the most abundant compounds. Geranyl acetate, trans-nerolidol and trans, trans-farnesyl acetate were evaluated as the characteristic impact odorants of changpo roots from results of AEDA and sniffing test. Especially, geranyl acetate was considered as the most similar odor component to changpo roots by organoleptic evaluation with GC/O.

This study was carried out to analyze effects of soil, water level and shading on growth of sweet flag(Acorus calamus var. angustatus). Three types of soil were used, which included sandy, silty loam and paddy loam soil. Three levels of shading were applied in the experiment: no shading, 55% shading and 75% shading. The water levels were also adjusted to three levels in the experiment. The results are summarized as follows; 1. The cultivation of sweet flag in sandy soil with low water level resulted in decreased fresh weight compared to that at planting. This result indicates that the water level should be maintained higher than the soil surface for sweet flag growth in sandy soil. 2. 5 out of 72 sweet flags died in paddy loam soil. Water saturation of soil easily reduced paddy loam soil, and root growth of sweet flags in reduced soil condition were restricted, resulting in the dead plants. 3. The growth of sweet flag in paddy loam soil was worse than those in silty loam, indicating that reduced soil conditions in paddy loam is harmful to root growth. In planting sweet flags in paddy loam, improved soil aeration in paddy loam soil is necessary for good growth of sweet flag. 4. The maintaining of high water levels is better than that of low water levels in sweet flag cultivation. During winter, soil near the water surface froze and sweet flags in frozen soil were stressed physiologically. Maintaining high water levels prevents soil from being frozen which is good for the growth of sweet flags. 5. There was not significant difference in the growth of the sweet flag between non-shading and 55% shading. It thus appears that sweet flags can grow soundly under shading rate lower than 55%.
This study was carried out to select the utilizable vegetations for the stabilization of slopes and river banks, landscape creation and water quality cleansing in dams, lakes and streams. In this study, 4 species were investigated for their survival and growth characteristics in the complete and partly flooding conditions with various flooding periods. The results are as followings; Acorus calamus var. angustatus showed the highest flooding tolerance based on survival rate and growth condition. Equisetum hyemale, Acorus gramineus and Salix gracilistyla followed after Acorus calamus var. angustatus in the order of flooding tolerance. Particularly, A. calamus var. angustatus and E. hyemale showed higher survival rate and grew well even when they were completely submerged in the water up to 120 days. As they were partially submerged longer, they grew better. This ascertained that they had strong flooding tolerance. When A. gramineus were completely submerged in the water, their growth was disturbed but they did not die in the complete submergence up to 120 days. A. gramineus had a small growth disturbance and showed the highest vitality of leaves among the species. Though S. gracilistyla showed somewhat low growth rate in the complete water submergence and died in 90 days, it also can grow back to normal with some changes of water level.
My essay aims at illustrating Whitman's homosexual vision of utopia with a close reading of his representative homosexual text, Calamus. His expansive self is based upon his intimate contact with the world and is almost always drawn to a wider vision of community in which different individuals share the locus of commonness and reach beyond their empirical boundaries. While foregrounding the contingent and the singular, Whitman forges bonds with other people through a series of ecstatic moments that carry us into the public sphere and common interests. Contrary to the current Whitman studies, his homosexual text doesn't repress contingency in order to celebrate the universal, but fully develops the commensurability among diverse historical agents. Whitman knows well the social taboos and inhibitions at the time of national crisis and expansion, but keeps imagining the world where homosexuality plays a central and significant role in founding a democratic solidarity and achieving a desirable social structure. His ideal of America is not a deferred wish for the future, but a concrete vision that can be achieved here and now, realized by the spontaneous bonding and instant attraction among free men. Instead of interpreting history or suggesting practical alternatives, he keeps questioning the dominant ideologies and the given orders of social control, and suggests a free and open relationship among men where no exterior power or mediating other intervenes. His utopian vision is radical as well as ideal, in that it rejects the interventions of the power structure and its institutions and courageously inscribes his homosexuality in the process of writing about and reading his contemporary America. As a predecessor of a homosexual utopian vision of America, Whitman has inspired many later poets, showing a possibility of infusing a homosexual identity into a radical imaging of the nation and its future.

The physical and chemical characteristics of powders from hot air and freeze dried leaves and roots of Acorous calamus L. were investigated. Two parts, upper and lower, of leaves, and two kinds of roots, 4 and 6 years old, were dried at 30 and $40^{\circ}C$, freeze-dried, and ground to make powder. Contents of moisture, ash, crude fat, and crude protein in freeze dried powder of upper leaf were 4.87%, 6.73%, 2.22%, and 3.57%, respectively. Water absorption index (WAI) and water solubility index (WSI) in freeze dried powder of lower and upper leaves were 8.476 and 0.077 g/mL. Contents of chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b and total chlorophyll in freeze dried powder of upper leaves were 12.18, 16.86, and 29.11 mg/100 g, respectively. Contents of total and reducing sugar in freeze dried powder of 4 and 6 years roots were $111.89{\sim}119.21$ ppm and $5.02{\sim}5.22$ ppm, $109.92{\sim}114.65$ ppm and $5.21{\sim}5.32ppm$. Contents of total polyphenols and flavonoids in freeze dried powder of upper leaf were 125.02 and $21.02{\mu}g/mg$, respectively.

A quantitative method using ultra performance liquid chromatography with a photodiode array detector (UPLCPDA) was established for the analysis of 2 major plant metabolites: ${\beta}$-asarone and ${\alpha}$-asarone from Acorus gramineus, A. tatarinowii, A. calamus and Anemone altaica, and their contents are compared with other herbs of Acorus species. The method was validated according to the International Conference on harmonization (ICH) guideline for validation of analytical procedures with respect to precision, accuracy, and linearity. The average content of ${\beta}$-asarone in Acorus gramineus was significantly higher than that in others, with the second highest concentration observed in A. tatarinowii, and only a trace amounts found in A. calamus and Anemone altaica. In contrast, the average content of ${\alpha}$-asarone in A. calamus was the highest, followed by that in Acorus gramineus and A. tatarinowii. principle component analysis (PCA) confirmed that ${\beta}$-asarone and ${\alpha}$-asarone content differed among the species. These results suggest that this UPLC-PDA method can be considered as good quality control criteria for Acorus gramineus.
