Reducing Outgoing Traffic of Proxy Cache by Using Client-Cluster

  • Many web cache systems and policies concerning them have been proposed. These studies, however, consider large objects less useful than small objects in terms of performance, and evict them as soon as possible. Even if this approach increases the hit rate, the byte hit rate decreases and the connections occurring over congested links to outside networks waste more bandwidth in obtaining large objects. This paper puts forth a client-cluster approach for improving the web cache system. The client-cluster is composed of the residual resources of clients and utilizes them as exclusive storage for large objects. This proposed system achieves not only a high hit rate but also a high byte hit rate, while reducing outgoing traffic. The distributed hash table (DHT) based peer-to-peer lookup protocol is utilized to manage the client-cluster. With the natural characteristics of this protocol, the proposed system with the client-cluster is self-organizing, fault-tolerant, well-balanced, and scalable. Additionally, the large objects are managed with an index based allocation method, which balances the loads of all clients well. The performance of the cache system is examined via a trace driven simulation and an effective enhancement of the proxy cache performance is demonstrated.

Formal Verification and Testing of RACE Protocol Using SMV (SMV를 이용한 RACE 프로토콜의 정형 검증 및 테스팅)

  • In this paper, we present our experiences in using symbolic model checker(SMV) to analyze a number of properties of RACE cache coherence protocol designed by ETRI(Electronics and Communications Research Institute) and to verify that RACE protocol satisfies important requirements. To investigate this, we specified the model of the RACE protocol as the input language of SMV and specified properties as a formula in temporal logic CTL. We successfully used the symbolic model checker to analyze a number of properties of RACE protocol. We verified that abnormal state/input combinations was not occurred and every possible request of processors was executed correctly We verified that RACE protocol satisfies liveness, safety and the property that any abnormal state/input combination was never occurred. Besides, We found some ambiguities of the specification and a case of starvation that the protocol designers could not expect before. By this verification experience, we show advantages of model checking method. And, we propose a new method to generate automatically test cases which are used in simulation and testing.

A Review of Web Cache Prefetching

  • Web caches help to reduce latencies arising from slow networks through storing and reusing what was used before. Repeat access to a cached resource does not incur network latencies. However, resources that have never been used will not be found in the cache. Cache prefetching is a technique that helps to fill a cache with still-unused resources in anticipation that these resources will be used in the near future. Typically these unused resources are related to the resources that have been accessed in the recent past. While web caching exploits temporal locality, prefetching attempts to exploit spatial locality. Access to the prefetched resources will be cache hits, and therefore reduces the latency as perceived by the user. This paper reviews the cache infrastructure supported by the hypertext transfer protocol and discusses web cache prefetching in general, including Mozilla's prefetching infrastructure. It then classifies and reviews some prefetching techniques.

Analysis of Optimistic Cache Protocols based on broadcasting for Mobile Computing Environments (이동 컴퓨팅 환경에서 방송기반의 낙관적 캐쉬 프로토콜들에 대한 분석)

  • Caching in mobile computing environments Is an important technique that will reduce the effects such as limitation of bandwidth, restriction of resources and frequent disconnection. To reduce limitation and disconnection problems in mobile computing, a new form of caching system have been proposed based on a broadcast approach. This paper proposes a broadcast based cache protocol and examines the behaviors of the proposed scheme and well known schemes such as multiversion based scheme and Certification Reports. By a detailed simulation, we show some characteristics of different approaches to detect and resolve conflicts. We also show proposed scheme out performs other schemes with a low space and operation overhead.

Contactless Smart Card as a Cache for Geocaching

  • In this paper, the possibility of using a contactless smart card as a cache for geocaching is analyzed. Geocaching is an outdoor game in which players search for hidden boxes, or caches based on geographical coordinates. The problems with this game are the possibility of players cheating and the need to maintain the caches. And then there is the problem of the ignorant public accidentally discovering a cache and considering it an explosive device. This paper proposes a concept for a possible solution to the above problems by replacing the boxes with conventional contactless smart cards. Also, this concept makes geocaching more attractive by using various games. This paper proposes a system architecture as well as the cryptographic protocol required for secure communication between the player's smartphone and the card.

  • In this paper, we evaluate the performance of a Futurebus based multiprocessor system with MESI cache coherence protocol for four bus transaction types. Graphical symbols and compiler of SLAM II are used in modeling and simulation. A steady-state probability of each state for MESI protocol is computed by a Markov chain. The probability of each state is used as an input value for a correct simulation. Processor utilization, memory utilization, bus utilization, and the waiting time for bus arbitration are measured in terms of the number of processors, the hit ratio of cache memory, the probability of internal operation, and bus bandwidth.

  • This Paper proposes a new directory-based cache coherence scheme which significantly reduces coherence traffic by omitting unnecessary write-backs to home nodes for migratory exclusively-modified data. The proposed protocol is well matched to such migratory data which are accessed in turn by processors, since write-backs to home nodes are never used for such migratory sharing. The simulation result shows that our protocol dramatically alleviate the coherence traffic, and the traffic reduction could also lead to shorten network latency and execution time.

  • From the reciprocal connection by this Internet network researchs about the efficiency improvement of the whole system is accomplished with the method which reduces delays in message transmission. From here, we will do a comparative study between the user data program protocol (UDP) and the zero copy which does not use the buffer cache to fine out the valid method to improve the efficiency. In this thesis, I will change the message copy from execution process of the buffer cache of the TCP/IP on Unix OS with process on Linux OS. The object of conversion is to show you that the zero copy which doesn't use the buffer cache from transfer control class improves the communication efficiency.

Bus Splitting Techniques for MPSoC to Reduce Bus Energy (MPSoC 플랫폼의 버스 에너지 절감을 위한 버스 분할 기법)

  • Bus splitting technique reduces bus energy by placing modules with frequent communications closely and using necessary bus segments in communications. But, previous bus splitting techniques can not be used in MPSoC platform, because it uses cache coherency protocol and all processors should be able to see the bus transactions. In this paper, we propose a bus splitting technique for MPSoC platform to reduce bus energy. The proposed technique divides a bus into several bus segments, some for private memory and others for shared memory. So, it minimizes the bus energy consumed in private memory accesses without producing cache coherency problem. We also propose a task allocation technique considering cache coherency protocol. It allocates tasks into processors according to the numbers of bus transactions and cache coherence protocol, and reduces the bus energy consumption during shared memory references. The experimental results from simulations say the bus splitting technique reduces maximal 83% of the bus energy consumption by private memory accesses. Also they show the task allocation technique reduces maximal 30% of bus energy consumed in shared memory references. We can expect the bus splitting technique and the task allocation technique can be used in multiprocessor platforms to reduce bus energy without interference with cache coherency protocol.

  • 이동 컴퓨팅 환경에서 자주 접근하는 데이터에 대한 캐싱은 무선 채널의 좁은 대역폭에서 경쟁을 줄일 수 있는 유용한 기술이다. 그러나, 트랜잭션 캐시 일관성을 지원하는 전통적인 클라이언트/서버 전략은 클라이언트와 서버간에 많은 양의 통신을 필요로 하기 때문에 이동 클라이언트/서버 컴퓨팅 환경에서는 적절하지 않다. 본 논문에서는 브로드캐스트-기반 캐시 무효화 정책을 사용하면서 트랜잭션 캐시 일관성을 지원하는 OCC-UTS (Optimistic Concurrency Control with Update TimeStamp) 프로토콜을 제안한다. 접근한 데이터에 대한 일관성 검사 및 완료 프로토콜은 캐시 무효화 과정의 내부 과정으로 완전 분산 형태로 효율적으로 구현되며, 일관성 체크의 대부분이 이동 클라이언트에서 수행된다. 또한, 분석 모델에 기반한 성능 비교를 통해, 본 논문에서 제안하는 OCC-UTS 프로토콜이 다른 경쟁 프로토콜보다 높은 트랜잭션 처리율을 얻으며, 데이터 항목을 자주 접근하면 할수록 지역 캐시를 사용하는 OCC-UTS 프로토콜이 더 효율적임을 보인다. 이동 클라이언트의 접속 단절에 대해서는 무효화 브로드캐스트 윈도우를 크게 하여 접속 단절에 적절히 대처할 수 있다.Abstract In a mobile computing environment, caching of frequently accessed data has been shown to be a useful technique for reducing contention on the narrow bandwidth of the wireless channels. However, the traditional client/server strategies for supporting transactional cache consistency that require extensive communications between a client and a server are not appropriate in a mobile client/server computing environment. In this paper, we propose a new protocol, called OCC-UTS (Optimisitic Concurrency Control with Update TimeStamp), to support transactional cache consistency in a mobile client/server computing environment by utilizing the broadcast-based solutions for the problem of invalidating caches. The consistency check on accessed data and the commitment protocol are implemented in a truly distributed fashion as an integral part of cache invalidation process, with most burden of consistency check being downloaded to mobile clients. Also, our experiments based on an analytical model substantiate the basic idea and study the performance characteristics. Experimental results show that OCC-UTS protocol without local cache outperforms other competitor protocol, and the more frequent a mobile client accesses data items the more efficient OCC-UTS protocol with local cache is. With respect to disconnection, the tolerance to disconnection is improved if the invalidation broadcast window size is extended.
