Stability and activity of boron doped diamond (BDD) electrode are key factors for water treatment. In this study, BDD electrodes were prepared on various substrates such as Nb, Si, Ti, and $TiN_x/Ti$ by hot filament chemical vapor deposition (HFCVD) method. BDD/Ti film showed the delamination between BDD and Ti substrate due to the formation of TiC layer caused by diffusion of carbon. On the other hand, $BDD/TiN_x/Ti$ showed remarkably improved stability, compared to BDD/Ti. It was confirmed that $TiN_x$ intermediate layer act as barrier layer for diffusion of carbon. High potential window of 2.8 eV was maintained on the $BDD/TiN_x/Ti$ electrode and, better wastewater treatment capability and longer electrode working life than BDD/Nb, BDD/Si and BDD/Ti were obtained.

We prepared yarned carbon nanotube (CNT) fibers from a CNT forest synthesized on a Si wafer by chemical vapor deposition (CVD). The yarned CNT fibers were thermally annealed to reduce their resistance by removing the amorphous carbonaceous impurities present in the fibers. The resistance of the yarned CNT fiber gradually decreased with an increase in the annealing temperature from $200^{\circ}C$ to $400^{\circ}C$ but increased again above $450^{\circ}C$. We carried out thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) to confirm the burning properties of the amorphous carbonaceous impurities and the crystalline CNTs present in the fibers. The pattern of the mass change of the sample CNT fibers was very similar to that of the resistance change. We conclude that CNT fibers should be thermally annealed at temperatures below $400^{\circ}C$ for reducing and stabilizing their resistance.
In this study, we fabricated ZnS substrates with excellent transmittance in the mid-infrared region (3-5 ㎛) using hot pressing instead of conventional chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Diamond-like carbon (DLC) was coated on either one or both sides of the ZnS substrates to improve their mechanical properties and transmittance efficiency. To reduce the reflectance and further improve transmittance in the mid-infrared region, anti-reflection (AR) coating was designed for DLC/ZnS /AR and AR/ ZnS /AR structures. The coating structure, microstructure, and optical properties of the AR-coated ZnS substrates were subsequently investigated by employing energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The FTIR spectroscopy results demonstrated that, in the mid-infrared region, the average transmittance of the samples with AR coating on one and both sides increased by approximately 18% and 27%, respectively. Thus, AR coating improved the transmittance of the ZnS substrates.

The surface conductive layer (SCL) of chemical vapor deposition (CVD) diamonds has attracting much interest. However, neither photoemission electron microscopic (PEEM) nor micro-spectroscopic (PEEMS) information is available so far. Since SCL retains in an ultra-high vacuum (UHV) condition, PEEM or PEEMS study will give an insight of SCL, which is the subject of the present study. The sample was made on a Ib-type HTHP diamond (001) substrate by non-doping CVD growthin a DC-plasma deposition chamber. The SCL properties of the sample in air were; a few tens K/Sq. in sheet resistance, ${\sim}180\;cm^2/vs$ in Hall mobility, ${\sim}2{\times}10^{12}/cm^2$ in carrier concentration. The root-square-mean surface roughness (Rq) of the sample was ~0.2nm as checked by AFM. A $2{\times}1$ LEED pattern and a sheet resistance of several hundreds K/Sq. in UHV were checked in a UHV chamber with an in-situ resist-meter [1]. The sample was then installed in a commercial PEEM/S apparatus (Omicron FOCUS IS-PEEM) which was composed of electro-static-lens optics together with an electron energy-analyzer. The presence of SCL was regularly monitored by measuring resistance between two electrodes (colloidal graphite) pasted on the two ends of sample surface. Figure 1 shows two PEEM images of a same area of the sample; a) is excited with a Hg-lamp and b) with a Xe-lamp. The maximum photon energy of the Hg-lamp is ~4.9 eV which is smaller that the band gap energy ($E_G=5.5\;eV$) of diamond and the maximum photon energy of the Xe-lamp is ~6.2 eV which is larger than $E_G$. The image that appear with the Hg-lamp can be due to photo-excitation to unoccupied states of the hydrogen-terminated negative electron affinity (NEA) diamond surface [2]. Secondary electron energy distribution of the white background of Figs.1a) and b) indeed shows that the whole surface is NEA except a large black dot on the upper center. However, Figs.1a) and 1b) show several features that are qualitatively different from each other. Some of the differences are the followings: the two main dark lines A and B in Fig.1b) are not at all obvious and the white lines B and C in Fig.1b) appear to be dark lines in Fig.1a). A PEEMS analysis of secondary electron energy distribution showed that all of the features A-D have negative electron affinity with marginal differences among them. These differences can be attributed to differences in the details of energy band bending underneath the surface present in SCL [3].

Tetrafluoromethane ($CF_4$) has been used as etching and Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) gases for semiconductor manufacturing processes. These gases need to be removed efficiently because of their strong absorption of infrared radiation and long atmospheric lifetimes which cause the global warming effect. Also, the wastewater including the fluorine is caused by of the ground water pollution. Long-term consumption of water containing excessive fluoride can lead to fluorosis of the teeth and bones. The wastewater including the fluorine among the by-product which is generated by using the waterjet plasma after destroying $CF_4$ by HF is generated. The system which can remove the hydrogen fluoride among the wastewater by using the electrocoagulation using this wastewater the aluminum electrode was developed. The operating condition such as initial pH, electrocoagulation time, wastewater flow rate, current density were investigated experimentally using a electrocoagulation. Through the parametric studies, the highest hydrogen fluoride destruction of 85% was achieved at 3.5 initial pH, 10 min electrocoagulation time, 10 mL/min wastewater flow rate and $159A/m^2$ current density.

Graphene, with its unique physical and structural properties, has recently become a proving ground for various physical phenomena, and is a promising candidate for a variety of electronic device and flexible display applications. Compared to indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes, which have a typical sheet resistance of ${\sim}60{\Omega}$/sq and ~85% transmittance in the visible range, the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) synthesized graphene electrodes have a higher transmittance in the visible to IR region and are more robust under bending. Nevertheless, the lowest sheet resistance of the currently available CVD graphene electrodes is higher than that of ITO. In this study, we report a creative strategy, irradiation of microwave at room temperature under vacuum, for obtaining size-homogeneous gold nano-particle doping on graphene. The gold nano-particlization promoted by microwave irradiation was investigated by transmission electron microscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy elemental mapping. These results clearly revealed that gold nanoparticle with ${\geq}30$ nm in mean size were decorated along the surface of the graphene after microwave irradiation. The fabrication high-performance transparent conducting film with optimized doping condition showed a sheet resistance of ${\geq}100{\Omega}$/sq. at ~90% transmittance. This approach advances the numerous applications of graphene films as transparent conducting electrodes.

Direct synthesis of graphene using a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) has been considered a facile way to produce large-area and uniform graphene film, which is an accessible method from an application standpoint. Hence, their fundamental understanding is highly required. Unfortunately, the CVD growth mechanism of graphene on Cu remains elusive and controversial. Here, we present the evidences for two different growth modes of graphene on Cu investigated by varying carbon feedstock (C2H2 and CH4) and working pressure. The number of uniform graphene layer grown by C2H2 increased with increasing its injection time. A combined secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) study revealed a carbon-diffused Cu layer created below surface region of Cu substrate with the expansion of Cu lattice. The graphene on Cu was grown by the diffusion and precipitation mode not by the surface adsorption mode, because similar results were observed in graphene/Ni system. The carbon-diffused Cu layer was also observed after graphene growth under high CH4 pressure. Based on various previous results and ours, we have successfully found that there are two selective growth modes for graphene on Cu substrate, and a desired mode can be chosen by tuning working pressure corresponding to the kind of carbon feedstock. We believe that this finding will shed light on high quality graphene growth and its multifaceted applications.
Mono- and few-layer graphenes were grown on Ni thin films by rapid-thermal pulse chemical vapor deposition technique. In the growth steps, the exposure step for 60 s in $H_2$ (a flow rate of 10 sccm (standard cubic centimeters per minute)) atmosphere after graphene growth was specially established to improve the quality of the graphenes. The graphene films grown by exposure alone without $H_2$ showed an intensity ratio of $I_G/I_{2D}$ = 0.47, compared with a value of 0.38 in the films grown by exposure in H2 ambient. The quality of the graphenes can be improved by exposure for 60 s in $H_2$ ambient after the growth of the graphene films. The physical properties of the graphene films were investigated for the graphene films grown on various Ni film thicknesses and on 260-nm thick Ni films annealed at 500 and $700^{\circ}C$. The graphene films grown on 260-nm thick Ni films at $900^{\circ}C$ showed the lowest $I_G/I_{2D}$ ratio, resulting in the fewest layers. The graphene films grown on Ni films annealed at $700^{\circ}C$ for 2 h showed a decrease of the number of layers. The graphene films were dependent on the thickness and the grain size of the Ni films.

Using chemical vapor deposition(CVD), the synthesis of graphene was performed on poly and single crystalline Cu substrates. The growth behavior of graphene and its characterization were shown utilizing the optical microscopic image and its image analysis. As a result in the analysis of graphene growth, it was found out the graphene is growing always in particular direction in relation to the crystalline direction of a single grain in polycrystalline Cu substrate. With the image analysis it was possible to show the characterization of graphene, such as the growth direction and the number of layers showing single, double and triple layers, within the neighboring single grains in polycrystalline Cu. In addition, the relatively large area of graphene with about $3mm^2$ on Cu(111) having high quality, single layer, and single crystalline was shown along with its characterization.

Pure-carbon materials such as graphite, graphene, carbon nanotubes, and diamond have very high thermal conductivities. The reported thermal conductivity of graphene is in the range 3000~5000W/m-K at room temperature. Here, we developed graphene/cu foam hybrid type heat spreader to obtain higher thermal conductivity than Cu foam. Hybrid materials were characterized using optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermal conductivity measurement system; LFA (Laser Flash Analysis @ LFA 447, NETZSCH). We suggest that excellent thermal properties of graphene/cu foam hybrid structures are beneficial for all proposed electrical applications and can lead to a thermal management application.
