  • The current system of the East China Sea, a marginal sea in the northwest Pacific, has a seasonal variation. The Changjiang Diluted Water, Chinese coastal water in the East China Sea, has different seasonal paths. It flows southward along the Chinese coast within a narrow band in winter and does northeastward the Korea/Tsushima Strait in summer, which has been a subject to many researchers. In particular, low salinity in the South Sea of Korea in 1996 and 1998 was in discord with the Changjiang River discharge and the Changjiang Diluted Water seems to play an important role in occurrence of red tide in the South Sea of Korea in 1997 and on the contrary, disappearance in the next year. These facts suggested that the Changjiang Diluted Water does not flow along the same path in every summer. According to the analyses for path of the Changjiang Diluted Water using ocean color images by SeaWiFS and salinity observations by shipboard CTD in August for recent years, the Changjiang Diluted Water in summer flowed within the range of direction from southeastward to north-northeastward anticlockwise. However, the Changjiang Diluted Water flowed northeastward toward Jeju Island of Korea for the most part. It is necessary to examine the influence of major factors on path variability of the CDW in summer such as surface wind, the Changjiang River discharge and background current.

  • In this work Topex/Poseidon altimeter data 1993 - 2002 were used. There are three altimetry tracks (one ascending and two descending) that cross Tatar Strait. The data were collected in the points of sub-satellite tracks with the step 0.25 degree. 10-years average values were calculated for each month. The seasonal sea level variations were compared with tide gauges data. The well expressed annual cycle (with maximum at July-August and the minimum at February-March) prevails in the Tartar Strait. However, the seasonal variations expressed much weakly in both the altimetry track points and Kholmsk - Nevelsk tide-gauges that locate close to La Perouse Strait because of Okhotsk Sea influence. The sea level slopes between the Sakhalin Island and the continent coasts were analyzed in different seasons. We found that sea level increases near Sakhalin coast in spring and summer that corresponds to the northward flow. In autumn, otherwise, the sea level decreases near Sakhalin Island that corresponds to southward current. This result is verified by the CTD data gathered on the standard sections. Well-expressed upwelling is observed near coastline of Sakhalin Island in fall season. This phenomenon is caused by the northerly and the northwesterly wind which are typical for cold season.

  • Water mass distribution and currents were investigated off the east coast of Korea near the Hupo Bank using the CTD and ADCP data from June to August 2010. The typical water masses were: (1) Tsushima Surface Water (TSW) from the East Korean Warm Current (EKWC) in the surface layer, (2) a shallow thermocline at 20-30 m depth, (3) Tsushima Middle Water (TMW) of high salinity (>34.2) below the pycnocline, (4) North Korean Cold Water (NKCW) of low salinity (<34.05) and low temperature (<4°C) in the lower layer. In June, a double eddy was observed in which a cold filament intruded cyclonically from the south around a pre-existing cold-core eddy. A burst of strong southward current was recorded in mid-August due to a warm filament from the meandering EKWC. Current in the N-S direction was predominant due to topographic effects, and the direction of the northward EKWC was frequently reversed in its direction due to the eddy-filament activity, whereas the influence of the wind was not noticeable. The vertical structure of the current was of a two-layer system, with the northward EKWC in the upper layer and weak southward flows corresponding to the North Korean Cold Current (NKCC) in the deeper layer.

  • The diffusion characteristics of an ocean dumping material in the south-eastern East/Japan Sea related to regulate the physical characteristics with the observation and the hydraulic experiment are investigated. The main results are as follows; (1) Spying CTD observation result of the area of Jung in the East/Japan Sea, the ocean dumping area had influenced the Tsushima Warm Current of high temperature and salinity. Horizontal turbulent diffusivity is 1.913$\times$10$^{7}$ by drogue tracking. (2) From the experiment of settling, the initial settling velocity of each material is 1.0~2.7 cm/sec according to the specific gravity and initial concentration. In the pycnocline, particles didn't settle under the pycnocline any more and accumulated. It is signified that calculation of the sedimentation rate of the ocean dumping material including of vertical diffusion must be regard the pynocline in the ocean area have well-developed pycnocline. (3) Vertical turbulent diffusivity were 2.219$\times$10$^{-8}$ ~8.874$\times$10$^{-4}$ cm$^2$/sec from the experiment of settling. And, the pycnocline influenced the vertical turbulent diffusivity.

  • Temperate mycobacteriophage L1 encodes an unusual repressor (CI) for regulating its lytic-lysogenic switching and, in contrast to the repressors of most temperate phages, it binds to multiple asymmetric operator DNAs. Here, ions like $Na^+$, $Cl^-$, and $acetate^-$ ions were demonstrated to facilitate the optimal binding of CI to cognate operator DNA, whereas $K^+$, $Li^+$, ${NH_4}^+$, $Mg^{2+}$, $carbonate^{2-}$, and $citrate^{3-}$ ions significantly affected its operator binding activity. Of these ions, $Mg^{2+}$ unfolded CI most severely at room temperature and, compared to $Mg^{2+}$, $Na^+$ provided improved thermal stability to CI. Furthermore, the intrinsic tryptophan fluorescence of CI was changed notably upon replacing $Na^+$ with $Mg^{2+}$ and these opposing effects of $Mg^{2+}$ and $Na^+$ were also noticed in their actions on the C-terminal fragment (CTD) of CI. Taken together, $Na^+$ appeared to be more appropriate than $Mg^{2+}$ for maintaining the biologically active conformation of CI needed for its optimal binding to operator DNA.

  • Behavior of the Nakdong River plume was studied by the analysis of the observed CTD data and numerical simulations using three-dimensional Princeton Ocean model (POM) in which the river discharge, tides and winds were considered. During the flood season of summer the 30 psu isohaline expands northward to Daebyeon and southwestward to Samcheonpo. The model results show that the isohalines are approximately parallel to the bottom slope, which suggests the possibility of upwelling induced by the topographic effects. Northwesterly wind expands the river plume to the offshore direction so that the inflow of fresh plume water into Jinhae Bay through the Gaduk Channel is constrained, then the coastal upwelling seems to be caused by the wind-driven current at the southern edge of Gaduk Island. Southwesterly wind expands the river plume toward Daebyeon, and the inflow of fresh water into Jinhae Bay is also constrained.

  • Variable thickness plates are commonly encountered in the majority of mechanical/structural components of industrial applications. And, as a result of the unsymmetry of the structure or the load and the anisoptropy of the materials, the cracks in engineering structures are generally subjected to combined stresses. In spite of considerable practical interest, however, a few fracture mechanics study on combined mode crack in a variable thickness plate have carried out. In this respect, combined mode 1/3 stress intensity factors $K_{1}$ and $K_{3}$ at the crack tip for a variable thickness plate were obtained by 3-dimensional finite element analysis. Variable thickness plates containing a central slant crack were chosen. the parameters used in this study were dimensionless crack length .lambda. crack slant angle .alpha, thickness ratio .betha. and width ratio .omega. Stress intensity factors were calculated by crack opening displacement(COD) and crack tearing displacement(CTD) method proposed by Ingraffea and Manu. The effect of thickness ratio .betha. on $K_{1}$ is relatively great in comparison to $K_{3}$.

  • Continuous Water-Soluble Organic Carbons (WSOC) by the Particle Into Liquid Sampler - Total Organic Carbon (PILS-TOC) analyzer were measured at the Seoul intensive monitoring site from June 17 through July 5 in 2014. In addition, the 24 hour integrated PM2.5 collected by Teflon and Quartz filters were analyzed for water soluble ions by Ion chromatography (IC), WSOC by TOC from water extracts, organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC) by carbon analyzer using the thermal optical transmittance (TOT) method, and mass fragment ions (m/z) related to alkanes and PAHs (Poly Aromatic Hydrocarbons) by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometer-Thermal Desorption (GC/MS-TD). Based on the statistical analysis, four different Carbonaceous Thermal Distributions (CTDs) from OCEC thermal-gram were identified. This study discusses the primary and secondary sources of WSOC based on the Classified CTD, organic mass fragments, and diurnal patterns of WSOC. The results provide knowledge regarding the origins of WSOC and their behaviors.

  • A cooperative Korea-Japan investigation for the demersal fisheries resources of the East China Sea carried out by using the training ship Oshoro Maru belong to Hok-kaido University, Japan, during 1-8 November, 1991. The research vessel sampled 15 stations with demersal trawls on the East China Sea, and 1,364 nautical miles of track line were surveyed hydroacoustically. The hydroacoustic observations were taken with a scientific echo sounder operating at two frequencies of 25 kHz and 100 kHz, and a microcomputer-based echo integrator. Fish samples were collected by demersal trawling, and temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen were measured with a CTD system. The target strength of fish school was estimated from the relationship between mean scattering strength and catches caught by demersal trawling. The results obtained can be summarized as follows: 1. The mean backscattering strength for 15 layers occupied by demersal trawls at 25 kHz ranged from -70.4 dB to -59.1 dB. Then the catch per one hour ranged from 8.2 to 587.5 kg/hour. 2. The mean backscattering strength for the entire layer between transducer and seabed in the survey area of the East China Sea at 25 kHz and 100 kHz were -68.0 dB and -73.1 dB, respectively. 3. The mean fish-school target strength per one kilogram at 25 kHz and 100 kHz were -28.3 dB/kg, and -30.4 dB/kg, respectively.
