  • A mobile emission laboratory (MEL) was designed to measure the amount of traffic pollutants, with high temporal and spatial resolution under real conditions. Equipment for the gas-phase measurements of CO, NOx, $CO_2$, and THC and for the measurement of the number, concentration, and size distribution of fine and ultra-fine particles by an FMPS and CPC was placed in a minivan. The exhausts of different types of vehicles can be sampled by an MEL. This paper describes the technical details of the MEL and presents data from the experiment in which a car chases passenger vehicles fuelled by diesel and gasoline. The particle number concentration in the exhaust of the diesel vehicle was higher than that of the gasoline vehicle. However, the diesel vehicle with a DPF emitted fewer particles than the vehicle equipped with a gasoline direct injection engine, with particle diameters over 50 nm.

  • The on-orbit test simulation for predicting the instrument directional responsivity was conducted by the Monte Carlo based integrated ray tracing (IRT) computation technique and analytic flux-to-signal conversion algorithms. For the on-orbit test simulation, the Sun model consists of the Lambertian scattering sphere and emitting spheroid rays, the Amon-Ra instrument is a two-channel including a broadband scanning radiometer (energy channel) and an imager with ${\pm}2^{\circ}$ FOV (visible channel). The solar radiation produced by the Sun model is directed to the instrument viewing port and traced through the dual channel optical train. The instrument model is rotated on its rotation axis and this gives a slow scan of the Sun model over the full field of view. The direction of the incident lights are fed with scanned images obtained from the visible channel instrument. The instrument responsivity was computed by the ratio of the incident radiation input to the instrument output. In the radiometric simulation, especially, measured BRDF of the 3D CPC was used for scattering effects on radiometry. With diamond turned 3D CPC inner surface, the anisotropic surface scattering model from the measured data was applied to ray tracing computation. The technical details of the on-orbit test simulation are presented together with field-of-view calibration plan.

  • Background: Combining risk factors for prostate cancer into a predictive tool may improve the detection of prostate cancer while decreasing the number of benign biopsies. We compare one such tool, age multiplied by prostate volume divided by total serum PSA (PSA-AV) with PSA density and detection of primary malignant circulating prostate cells (CPCs) in a Chilean prostate cancer screening program. The objectives were not only to determine the predictive values of each, but to determine the number of clinically significant cancers that would have been detected or missed. Materials and Methods: A prospective study was conducted of all men undergoing 12 core ultrasound guided prostate biopsy for suspicion of cancer attending the Hospital DIPRECA and Hospital de Carabineros de Chile. Total serum PSA was registered, prostate volumecalculated at the moment of biopsy, and an 8ml blood simple taken immediately before the biopsy procedure. Mononuclear cells were obtained from the blood simple using differential gel centrifugation and CPCs identified using immunocytchemistry with anti-PSA and anti-P504S. Biopsy results were classed as positive or negative for cancer and if positive the Gleason score, number of positive cores and percent infiltration recorded. Results: A total of 664 men participated, of whom 234 (35.2%) had cancer detected. They were older, had higher mean PSA, PSA density and lower PSA-AV. Detection of CPCs had high predictive score, sensitivity, sensibility and positive and negative predictive values, PSA-AV was not significantly different from PSA density in this population. The use of CPC detection avoided more biopsies and missed fewer significant cancers. Conclusions: In this screening population the use of CPC detection predicted the presence of clinically significant prostate cancer better than the other parameters. The high negative predictive value would allow men CPC negative to avoid biopsy but remain in follow up. The formula PSA-AV did not add to the predictive performance using PSA density.

  • Expressions of endoplasmic reticulum stress response (ERSR) genes were examined during the neuronal differentiation of rat fetal cortical precursor cells (rCPC) and rat pheochromocytoma PC12 cells. When rCPC were differentiated into neuronal cells for 7 days, early stem cell marker, nest in, expression was decreased from day 4, and neuronal markers such as neurofilament-L, -M and Tuj1 were increased after day 4. In this condition, expressions of BIP, ATF6, and phosphorylated PERK as well as their down stream signaling molecules such as CHOP, ATF4, XBP1, GADD34, Nrf2 and $p58^{IPK}$ were significantly increased, suggesting the induction of ERSR during neuronal differentiation of rCPC. ERSR was also induced during the differentiation of PC12 cells for 9 days with NGF. Neurofilament-L transcript was time-dependently increased. Both mRNA and protein levels of Tuj1 were increased after the induction, and the significant increase in NeuN was observed at day 9. Similar to the expression patterns of neuronal markers, BIP/GRP78 and CHOP mRNAs were highly increased at day 9, and ATF4 mRNA was also increased from day 7. These results strongly suggest the induction and possible role of ERSR in neuronal differentiation process. Further study to identify targets responsible for neuronal induction will be necessary.

  • Nano-Particles are influenced on the environmental protection and human health. The relationships between transient vehicle operation and nano-particle emissions are not well-known, especially for diesel passenger vehicles with DPF. In this study, a diesel passenger vehicle was measured on condition of DPF regeneration and no regeneration on a chassis dynamometer test bench. The particulate matter (PM) emission from this vehicle was measured by its number, size and mass measurement. The mass of the total PM was evaluated with the standard gravimetric measurement method while the total number and size concentrations were measured on a NEDC driving cycle using Condensation Particle Counter (CPC) and EEPS. Total number concentration by CPC was $1.5{\times}10^{1l}N/km$, which was 20% of result by EEPS. This means about 80% of total particle emission is consist of volatile and small-sized particles(<22nm). During regeneration, particle emission was $6.2{\times}10^{12}N/km$, was emitted 400 times compared with the emission before regeneration. As for the particle size of $22{\sim}100nm$ was emitted mainly, showing peak value of near 40nm in size. This means regeneration decreased the mean size of particles. Regarding regeneration, PM showed no change while the particle number showed about 6 times difference between before and after regeneration. It seems that the regeneration influences on particle number emissions are related to DPF-fill state and filtration efficiency.

  • The root of Angelica gigas Nakai (AGN) is used as a traditional herbal medicine in Korea for the treatment of many diseases. However, a major challenge associated with the usage of the active compounds from AGN is their poor water solubility. Therefore, this work aimed to enhance the solubility of active compounds by a chemical (viz. surfactant) and physical (hot melt extrusion) crosslinking method (CPC). Infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (FT-IR) revealed multiple peaks in extrudate solids representing new functional groups including carboxylic acid, alkynes and benzene derivatives. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis of the extrudate showed lower glass transition temperature (Tg) and lower enthalpy (${\Delta}H$) (Tg: $43^{\circ}C$; ${\Delta}H$: <6 (J/g)) compared to the non-extrudate (Tg $68.5^{\circ}C$; ${\Delta}H$: 123.2) formulations. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed amorphization of crystal materials in extrudate solid. In addition, nanonization, enhanced solubility and higher extraction of phenolic compounds were achieved in the extrudate solid. Among the different extrudates, acetic acid- and Span 80-mediated formulations showed superior extractions. We conclude that the CPC method successfully enhanced the production of amorphous nano dispersions from extrudate solid formulations.

  • Objective : The optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD)/eyeball transverse diameter (ETD) ratio is a more reliable marker of intracranial pressure than the ONSD alone. We aimed to investigate the predictive value of the ONSD/ETD ratio (OER) for neurological outcomes in patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). Methods : Adult patients with aSAH who visited the emergency department of a tertiary hospital connected to a South Korean university between January 2015 and December 2021 were included. Data on patient characteristics and brain computed tomography scan findings, including the ONSD and ETD, were collected using a predefined protocol. According to the neurological outcome at hospital discharge, the patients were divided into the unfavorable neurological outcome (UNO; cerebral performance category [CPC] score 3-5) and the favorable neurological outcome (FNO; CPC score 1-2) groups. The primary outcome was the association between the OER and neurological outcomes in patients with aSAH. Results : A total of 171 patients were included in the study, of whom 118 patients (69%) had UNO. Neither the ONSD (p=0.075) nor ETD (p=0.403) showed significant differences between the two groups. However, the OER was significantly higher in the UNO group in the univariate analysis (p=0.045). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of the OER for predicting UNO was 0.603 (p=0.031). There was no independent relationship between the OER and UNO in the multivariate logistic regression analysis (adjusted odds ratio, 0.010; p=0.576). Conclusion : The OER was significantly higher in patients with UNO than in those with FNO, and the OER was more reliable than the ONSD alone. However, the OER had limited utility in predicting UNO in patients with aSAH.

  • With the emergence of the new era of the 4th industrial revolution, compute-bound workloads with large memory footprint like big data processing increase dramatically. Even in such compute-bound workloads, however, we observe bulky I/Os while loading big data from storage to memory. Although file I/O cache plays a role of accelerating the performance of storage I/O, we found out that the cache hit rate in such environments is not improved even though we increase the file I/O cache capacity because of some special I/O references generated by compute-bound workloads. To cope with this situation, we propose a new file I/O cache management policy that improves the cache hit rate for compute-bound workloads significantly. Trace-driven simulations by replaying file I/O reference logs of compute-bound workloads show that the proposed cache management policy improves the cache hit rate compared to the well-acknowledged CLOCK algorithm by a large margin.

  • A bacterial strain producing highly viscous extracellular polysaccharide was isolated from soil. Through morphological, physiological and chemotaxonomical studies, it was identified as a Bacillus sp. and named Bacillus sp. PS-12. The extracellular polysaccharide, named PS-12 was purified by ethanol precipitation, cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) precipitation and gel permeation chromatography. The purified polysaccharide was found to consist of glucose, mannose, galactose, and fucose, with a molar ratio of approximately 7:3.2:2:1, respectively. PS-12 was investigated for its immunostimulating activity on murine macrophage RAW264.7 cells using an ELISA assay. PS-12 stimulated the production of TNF-${\alpha}$ to a level 50 times greater than the control and also induced 1L-6 secretion in a dose-dependent manner. The cytotoxicity on RAW264.7 cells by PS-12 was relatively low with 10% cytotoxicity at 2 ${\mu}g$/ml. These results indicate that PS-12 is less cytotoxic to immune cells and possess immunomodulating activity in which it can produce cytokines including TNF-${\alpha}$ and 1L-6 from macrophages.

  • This paper is to investigate the characteristics of exhaust emissions and nano-particle emission from diesel passenger vehicle according to using biodiesel fuel as an alternative fuel. In this work, the particulate matters (PM) of exhaust emissions in diesel engine were investigated by number of particles and mass measurement. The mass of the total PM was measured using the standard gravimetric measurement method, the total number concentrations were measured on a ECE15+EUDC driving cycle using Condensation Particle Counter (CPC). Total PM emission was reduced $2{\sim}38%$ and number concentration was reduced $1{\sim}27%$ according to increasing blended ratio of biodiesel with diesel fuel. Total PM emission was reduced more than particle number emission because volatile particles were measured in total PM but were not measured in particle number emissions.
