  • A recent trend shows that more buildings are being constructed as mixed-use (residential and commercial) properties for efficient land use. This has led to an increased frequency in the occurrence of fires and the associated potential risks. In particular, in case of high-rise apartments, at least one of the elevators in each building is installed for evacuation purposes separately from the emergency elevator; therefore, for a combined ancillary room and emergency elevator platform situation, the structure is inevitably in series with the evacuation elevator platform. Thus, a proposal for a new type of ventilation zone based on existing national fire safety codes is required to achieve smoke control performance. To this end, the air egress velocity and differential pressure of each ventilation zone are checked using the "CONTAM" software; further, an alternative is proposed to secure smoke control performance for series structures.

  • In this study the real situation of apartment house in seoul is reproduced with multi-zone modeling program CONTAM2.4. This model include disinfection system which is consist of dilution, filtration, UVGI(ultra violet germicidal irradiation). It's energy consumption was also analyzed through the linked model of CONTAM and TRNSYS according to the combination of components. The comparison of total energy consumption through energy analysis revealed that adjusting the air change rate of the UVGI air sterilizer to maintain the same indoor microbe removal capability was more advantageous in terms of energy consumption.

  • In the U.S., the pressurization of elevator shaft was developed in 1972 to allow vulnerable people, such as the elderly and weak who could not use escape stairs in case of fire, to evacuate. It is an advantage in terms of space saving by not using vertical ducts. This study drew the problem of the pressurization of elevator shaft based on the existing domestic patents and proposed improvements. The smoke control volume calculation method is proposed by using vertical modeling. Leakage gaps in elevator doors need to be reviewed through experimental data or actual data. The evacuation floor was divided, the openings in the elevator machine room were automatically closed to the fire signal and the relief damper was installed to improve the performance. The improved method functions as the smoke control damper supplying the air flow rather than maintaining the differential pressure. To increase reliability of the research results, the procedure was performed to verify by using Contam.

  • This study used CONTAM modeling to analyzed analyze the stack effect in high-rise buildings for the terrain and weather conditions of Seoul and Jeju. The differential pressure caused by the stack effect is a function of the indoor and outdoor temperature difference and the height of the vertical shaft. Jeju is considered more stable than Seoul, because it is warmer than Seoul in winter. The differential pressure in Jeju is about 60% that of Seoul in for the same height of buildings in winter. However, Jeju is an island and the neutral plane is raised by over 56% by strong winds, although there is less differential pressure caused by the stack effect in Jeju than in Seoul. Due to the raised neutral plane, the region and magnitude of negative pressure in the lower part is larger in Jeju than in Seoul.

  • This study analyzed the performance of smoke exhaustion installed to secure the life safety from the smoke each opening modes, as performing the simulation on the Jeju regions generating to strong windy using CONTAM. We assessed the effectiveness of the system under conditions of high external winds as well as an ambient wind conditions. It also assessed the relative effectiveness of opening all vents versus opening only those vents which served rooms in which the fire was located. This study revealed external winds exerted a substantial impact on the performance of the smoke ventilation system. It was found that opening the ventilation system in the room containing the fire resulted in a greater performance than opening vents in both fire in all rooms. The reduced performance of the smoke ventilation system upon the opening of all vents is thought to be due to the intrusion of outside air, and the establishment of unfavorable air circulation, caused by the negative pressure generated in the building.

  • Indoor airborne particles are consisted of outdoor- and indoor-generated particles, which can be characterized by their compositions, generation features and toxicity. The identification of source contribution of indoor and outdoor origin to indoor particles is important to understand PM2.5 transport in a building as well as its impact on occupant health. The objective of this study is to investigate seasonal source contribution to indoor PM2.5 concentration depending on airtightness of apartment units. To evaluate the source contribution, particle transport including penetration, generation, exfiltration in an apartment housing unit was simulated by using CONTAM with particle and airflow simulation parameters obtained from field measurements. The result showed that the outdoor source contribution to indoor air was relatively dominant in the leaky housing unit during spring (77.2%) and winter (73.9%), and the indoor source was dominant in the airtight housing unit during summer (60.3%) and fall (60.7%). These results indicate the seasonal health risk of indoor PM2.5 can be varied according to airtightness of apartment units.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyze the differential pressure and velocity to prevent smoke backflow of Stairways Apartment House fire, and verified the effectiveness of smoke velocity standards proposed by NFSC 501A. Method: The smoke control design of the stairways apartment house of the real model and the performance of the velocity to prevent smoke backflow according to the window opening conditions of the living room were analyzed using the CONTAM program. Result: Although the differential pressure performance of the apartment's smoke control system was satisfactory, it was found that Performance of velocity to prevent smoke backflow did not come out according to the opening condition of the living room window. Conclusion: In the case of Stairways Apartment House, it is necessary to review the method of making exceptions to the 'velocity to prevent smoke backflow' standard required by the National Fire Safety Codes(NFSC 501A)

  • Purpose: In the event of a fire in a high-rise building, if the smoke control area is not effectively protected, smoke or flames enter the stairwell, making it difficult to evacuate. When inflowing air is discharged from a closed corridor, a negative pressure is formed in the corridor, the pressure in the smoke control area becomes excessively high, and the force required to open the door during evacuation is exceeded. Also, if the air introduced into the hallway is not exhausted, the smoke may flow back into the smoke control area. This paper tried to identify the problems caused by the inflowing air and to find out how to improve the performance. Method: Using the CONTAM program, simulations were performed with the basic conditions and the modified conditions. Result: If the inflowing air was discharged from the sealed corridor, overpressure occurred in the Smoke Control Area and exceeded the opening force, and the prevent smoke backflow was insufficient in the layer where the inflowing air was not discharged. Conclusion: "Differential pressure exhaust damper" application, simultaneous opening of two exhaust dampers, and automatic window installation between corridors and outdoors improved the exhaust performance of inflowing air.

  • Purpose: During the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been many cases of converting regular hospital wards into temporary negative pressure isolation wards. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the minimum airflow differences that satisfies the pressure difference criteria(-2.5 Pa) according to airtightness of switching type wards, in preparation for utilization of aging regular wards as negative pressure isolation wards. Methods: Visual inspection and field measurements were conducted using blower door to evaluate airtightness of 5 hospital wards. CONTAM simulation was used to assess the airflow differences when pressure difference between the corridor and wards met the criteria at various levels of airtightness. Results: The ACH50 of evaluated wards ranged from 19.3 to 50.1 h-1 with an average of 37.0 h-1, indicating more than four times leakier than other building types. The minimum airflow differences increased as the airtightness of the wards decreased and the size of the wards increased. Implications: When operating rapidly converted negative pressure isolation wards, understanding airtightness is crucial for determining the minimum airflow differences to maintain the pressure differences. The analysis of this study suggests that improving the airtightness of aging rooms is essential and the minimum airflow differences should be suggested considering both the airtightness and size of rooms.

  • These days, the super high-rise buildings construction plans are increased in Korea. But the stack effect in the super high-rise building interrupts the smoke control system's operation because of pressure difference, so it is more dangerous than the general building when firing. Therefore it needs to study about the pressure difference in the super high-rise buildings. We research the smoke control influence factor in the super high-rise building. Reflecting the influence factor, the simulation is practiced the case by case.
