Objectives: This study aims at examining the association of sense of community with community participation for health promotion in urban areas of Korea. Methods: We analyzed data from 'Community Capacity for Healthy Gangdong Communites' Survey' in 2007. The survey was based on self-reported questionnaires, which were distributed to 1,800 community residents over the age of nineteen in five administrative communities of Gangdong-gu, Seoul, in Korea by using proportionate probability sampling method. We measured 'Sense of community' with four indicators including 'Good neighborhoods', 'Perceived possibility of cooperation', 'Pride of community' and 'Possibility of development' by using 5-point Likert scales. Community participation was measured with the experience rate or the extent of participation by 5-point Likert scales in seven community actions or activities including voting, community program planning, social actions, etc. We examined the association of sense of community with community participation by using regression analyses. Results: This study has shown that sense of community was associated with and made positive impacts on community participation in diverse community actions or activities in urban communities. Conclusions: For promoting community health in urban areas, we can increase community participation more effectively with the efforts of enhancing sense of community.

Particularly, the study examine the moderating effects on the length of residency between sense of community and community participation. Data were collected from 130 usable questionnaires among residents of rural villages. Results of a factor analysis yielded three dimensions of sense of community which are solidarity, belonging, and emotional intimacy. Results show that all of factors among three dimensions of sense of community have significance for community participation. And length of residency has a positive effects as a moderator between community capacity and community satisfaction. Results also indicated that length of residence has an negative interactional effects with moderator. It means that even though higher belonging, less community participation if people live in longer their community. It was suggested that sense of community and length of residency should be considered in rural community development policy.

The vegetation type was classified into 18 communities based on the actual vegetation map: Phragmites communis community, Miscanthus sacchariflorus community, Salix nipponica community, Echinochloa crus-galli var. frumentacea community, Zizania latiofolia community, Cyperus amuricus community, Spirodela polyrhiza community, Trapa japonica community, Phragmites communis-Miscanthus sacchariflorus community, Salix nipponiaz-Misaznthus sacchariflorus community, Cyperus amuricus-Acorus calamus var. angustatus community, Salvinia natans community, Hydrilla verticillata-Spirodela polyrhiza community, Persiazria maackiana community, Trapa japonica-Salvinia natans community, Hydrilla verticillata community, Potamogeton crispus community, and Populus deltoides community. Among them, Phragmites communis community was the largest (34.9 ha, 29.53%). The dominant vegetation type was Persiazria hydropiper - Persicaria maackiana community based on the phytosociological method, and it was classified into four subcommunities: Phalaris arundinacea-Salix nipponica subcommunity, Miscanthus sacchariflorus subcommunity, Phragmites communis subcommunity, and Spirodela polyrhiza subcommunity, and Acorus calamus var. angustatus group belongs to Miscanthus sacchariflorus subcommunity.
In this study, wetlands and forest vegetation surrounding rail, road of DMZ area and Civilian Control Line were studied as follows: Plant communities hierarchical system of forest vegetation classified according to the results of phytosociological methods of Braun-Blanquet (1964) as; Quercus mongolica community, Quercus mongolica-Quercus variabilis community and Quercus acutissima -Quercus mongolica community. Wetland vegetation major communities; Scirpus wichurae community, Scirpus fluviatilis community, Juncus effusus var. decipiens community, Typha orientalis community, Typha angustata community, Juncus alatus community, Miscanthus sacchariflorus community, Phragmites communis-Miscanthus sacchariflorus community, Hragmites communis community, Phragmites communis-Alnus japonica community, Alnus japonica community, Phragmites japonica community, Salix koreensis community, Prunus padus community, Alnus japonica community, Zizania latifolia community and Amorpha fruticosa community were surveyed. Coastal sand dune vegetation in a DMZ area and the Civilian Control Line was mainly characterized by; Carex pumila, Elymus mollis, Carex kobomugi, Rosa rugosa, Calystegia soldanella, Lathyrus japonica and Aster hispidus, species that are of typically sand dune vegetation.
