  • This paper compares engineering estimation schemes of C* and creep COD for circumferential and axial through-wall cracked pipes at elevated temperatures with detailed 3-D elastic-creep finite element results. Engineering estimation schemes included the GE/EPRI method, the reference stress method where reference stress is defined based on the plastic limit load and the enhanced reference stress method where the reference stress is defined based on the optimized reference load. Systematic investigations are made not only on the effect of creep-deformation behaviour on C* and creep COD, but also on effects of the crack location, the pipe geometry, the crack length and the loading mode. Comparison of the FE results with engineering estimations provides that for idealized power law creep, estimated C* and COD rate results from the GE/EPRI method agree best with FE results. For general creep-deformation laws where either primary or tertiary creep is important and thus the GE/EPRI method is hard to apply, on the other hand, the enhanced reference stress method provides more accurate and robust estimations for C* and COD rate than the reference stress method.

  • Thermal shock resistance of $Al_2O_3$- and Fe-$Al_2TiO_5$-based Castable Refractories was studied using a central heating technique. Ring type specimens, 10mm thick and 20 and 100mm inner and outer diameters, respectively, were rapidly heated on the internal surface of the centre hole using a high power electrical heating element. The temperature field was measured experimentally and modelled using finite element analysis (FEA). The thermal stress field was also modelled using FEA. A radial notch was introduced to the ring specimens to enable calculation of the thermal stress intensity factors (SIF). A special LVDT device was incorporated in the thermal shock tester to monitor crack mouth opening displacement (COD). The thermal shock fracture initiation and crack propagation behaviour of the castable refractories were ascertained using the COD measurements and the fracture mechanics analysis data.

  • In this study, in order to evaluate the shape and the size of the plastic zone at the notch tip before stable crack growth, a newly developed technique for plastic strain measurement, that is, the recrystallization-etching technique was applied to observe the intense strain zone at the notch tip of weld HAZ. 1) The recrystallized specimens showed that the amount of the intense strain zone, more than 20% plastic zone, was quantitatively observed as the plane strain state during the growth of the plastic zone. 2) The behavior of plastic deformation at midsection are different for parent and weld HAZ. In addition, the micro crack initiation occurs at midsection, parent and weld HAZ when the crack opening displacement(COD) value is .delta.$_{t}$=0.4mm. 3) The plastic zone for parent proceeds in the forward direction at notch tip and for weld HAZ in the right and left direction at the notch tip. 4) The relation between plastic strain energy(Wp) and COD(.delta.$_{t}$) depended on yield stress, gradient and plastic strain size.ize.

  • Many damages due to flow-accelerated corrosion and cracking have been observed during recent in-service inspections of nuclear power plants. To determine the operability or repair for damaged pipes, an integrity evaluation related to the damaged piping system should be performed by using already proven code and standards. One of them, the ASME Code Case is most popularly used to integrity assessment in nuclear power plants. However, the recent version of CC N-513 still recommends the simplified method which means a damaged elbow is assumed as an equivalent straight pipe. In addition, to enhance the accuracy integrity assessment in elbow, several previous studies recommend that the SIF and elastic COD values for an elbow with relatively large crack could be predicted by an interpolation technique. However, those estimates for elbow with relatively large crack might be derived to inaccurate results for crack growth analysis, such as for the allowable crack size and life estimation. Therefore, in this paper, the effect of crack length (0.3≤θ1/π≤0.5) on SIF and elastic COD for elbow is systematically investigated. Then, for large crack in elbow, accurate estimates for SIF and elastic COD, which are widely used to assess the integrity of elbows, are proposed. Those proposed solutions are expected to be the technical basis for revisions of CC N-513-4 through the validation.

  • Modified singular fracture process zone(S-FPZ) model is proposed in this paper to determine a fracture criterion for continuous crack propagation in concrete. The investigated fracture properties of the proposed fracture model are strain energy release rate at a micro-crack tip and the relationship between crack closure stress(CCS) and crack opening displacement(COD) in the FPZ. The proposed model can simulate the actual fracture energy of experimental results fairly well. The results of the experimental data analysis show that specimen geometry and loading condition did not affect the CCS-COD relation. However, the strain energy release rate is a function of not only specimen geometry but also crack extension. The strain energy release rate remained constantly at the minimum value up to the crack extension of 25 mm, and then it increased linearly to the maximum value. The maximum fracture criterion occurred at the peak load for specimens of large size. The fracture criterion remained at the maximum value after the peak load. The variation of the fracture criterion is caused by micro-cracking and micro-crack localization. The fracture criterion of strain energy release rate can simply be the size effect of concrete fracture, and it can be used to quantify the micro-cracking and micro-crack localizing behavior of concrete.

  • Variable thickness plates are commonly encountered in the majority of mechanical/structural components of industrial applications. And, as a result of the unsymmetry of the structure or the load and the anisoptropy of the materials, the cracks in engineering structures are generally subjected to combined stresses. In spite of considerable practical interest, however, a few fracture mechanics study on combined mode crack in a variable thickness plate have carried out. In this respect, combined mode 1/3 stress intensity factors $K_{1}$ and $K_{3}$ at the crack tip for a variable thickness plate were obtained by 3-dimensional finite element analysis. Variable thickness plates containing a central slant crack were chosen. the parameters used in this study were dimensionless crack length .lambda. crack slant angle .alpha, thickness ratio .betha. and width ratio .omega. Stress intensity factors were calculated by crack opening displacement(COD) and crack tearing displacement(CTD) method proposed by Ingraffea and Manu. The effect of thickness ratio .betha. on $K_{1}$ is relatively great in comparison to $K_{3}$.

  • In order to use effectively a machinery part with fillet, it is necessary to determine a proper fillet shape in design step, Study of such problem by fracture mechanical criterion is rare. So, this paper focuses on the design of fillet radius in fracture mechanical aspect. Finite element method was used to obtain crack tip stress intensity factor. Stress intensity factor was calculated by COD(crack opening displacement0method proposed by Ingraffea and Manu. The parameter used in this study are thickness ration, filet radium and crack length . If fillet radius increase , crack propagation may be accelerated. Critical crack length is inversely proportional to fillet radius.

  • Fracture behavior of pre-cracked compact tension specimens made of AISI 4130 steel was investigated using acoustic emission (AE) and ultrasonic C-scan measurements. While each specimen was loaded up to a certain level, various acoustic emission parameters were recorded together with the crack opening displacement (COD). An elastic-plastic finite element analysis was performed to calculate COD and the damage (plastic) zone size ahead of crack tip. Ultrasonic C-scans, in a pulse-echo, immersion mode, were done for mapping the damage zone size. The agreement between the finite element results and the measured COD was satisfactory. Based on AE results, the test specimens were found to show ductile behavior. The slope of the total ringdown counts vs. COD curve was useful to determine the crack initiation. The preliminary C-scan images showed evidence of changes in the amplitude of ultrasonic signal in the damaged region, and the shape and size of the damage zone matched qualitatively with the finite element results. A further work on the damage zone sizing was also pointed out.

  • Defective components of interest include not only homogeneous components, but also components with weldments where tensile properties vary across the weldment. Noting that the region near the weldment is the most vulnerable place for crack initiation and subsequent growth, defect assessment methods for homogeneous structure. Moreover, weldment width and crack location also affects the deformation and fracture behavior of the welded joints. These weld characteristics can evaluate using plastic limit load. So in this paper, evaluate plastic limit load both full circumference part-throughwall cracked pipes and circumference through-wall cracked pipes considering weld characteristics. And using evaluate results, proposed J-integral and crack opening displacement(COD) estimate method based on reference stress method.

  • Three dimensional, elastic-plastic finite element(FE) analyses for circumferential through-wall cracked pipes under combined tension and bending are performed using actual tensile data of stainless steel, for two purposes. The first one is to validate the recently-proposed enhanced reference stress (ERS) method to estimate the J-integral and COD for circumferential through-wall cracked pipes under combined tension and bending. The second one is to compare those results with the GE/EPRI estimations. The FE results of the J-integral and the COD, resulting from six cases of proportional and non-proportional combined tension and bending, compare very well with those estimated from the proposed method. Excellent agreements of the proposed method with the detailed FE results provide sufficient confidence in the use of the proposed method to the Leak-Before-Break(LBB) analysis of through-wall cracked pipes under combined tension and bending.
