Gasoline engine have proved its utility in light, medium and heavy duty vehicle in every sector of the world community. The concern about long term availability of petroleum and the increasing threat for the environment by the increasing load of vehicular emission, compel the technology to upgrade itself for meeting the challenges. CNG is environmentally clean alternative to the existing SI Engines with out much change in the hardware. Many researchers have found this as a potential substitute to meet the energy requirement. Higher octane number and higher self ignition temperature make it a good gaseous fuel. Although power output is slightly lesser than the gasoline it's thermal efficiency is better than the gasoline for the same SI Engine. Results showed that reduced CO, hydrocarbon emissions is a favorable outcome, with slight increase in NOx emission when compared with gasoline fuel to dual fuel mode in the existing SI Engines.
Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses have been supplied since the year 2000 in order to resolve severe atmospheric pollution in metropolitan area and contributed on the improvement of urban atmospheric environment. However, it is indispensible to take an adequate measure to guarantee the safety of CNG vehicles because of the possibility of huge fire accident. A receptacle, connecting device between high pressure fuel supply tank and fuel line, plays an important role in CNG supply system. In recent, leakage of CNG from receptacles has been reported. So, the concern about the security and reliability of receptacles has been arisen. Therefore, a lot of efforts to prevent leakage are invested among researchers and the durability of this component should be guaranteed despite repeated operation. This research has performed durability tests of a CNG receptacle regarding the repeated usage, extreme chattering, and continuous full flow test. Although a receptacle used for CNG vehicle satisfies validation requirements in the test results, it has been found that failure in the function of leakage prevention in a receptacle could take place in the case of prolonged exposure to high supply pressure in common quick charging environment on site.
Recently, in order to meet the stricter emission regulations, the proportion of after-treatments for vehicle and vessel is increasing gradually. The purpose of this study is to investigate the de-$CH_4$ characteristics of NGOC in front of proposed combined system according to additive catalyst and support ratio. In the case of Pd addition, the de-$CH_4$ performance of 2Pt-2Pd-3MgO/$Al_2O_3$ NGOC was improved by approximately 10 to 20% for the HC components. The de-$CH_4$ performance of 2Pt-2Pd-3Cr-3MgO/$Al_2O_3$ NGOC was higher compared to five kinds of NGOC catalysts, because Cr particle was smaller and dispersion of Pd was increased. The NGOC(Zeolite:$Al_2O_3$(80%:20%)}catalyst according to support ratio, was improved performance at low temperature region on CO and NO conversion rate.

Bi-fuel system in a spark ignition engine (SIE) is a rising phenomena in today's automobile technology. In a gasoline driven vehicle, alternatively adoption of compressed natural gas (CNG) could be used as a potential substitute to meet the energy requirement and this is possible by some minor changes in the hardware of the existing engine. Gasoline engine is widely used in the passenger cars, light, medium and heavy duty vehicles but the consumption status of the petroleum is decreasing worldwide and at the same time environmental pollution from automobiles is seriously establishes as a threat for every nation in respect to global warming and climate changes. Now-a-days most vehicles operate using CNG for its popularity stems, clean burning properties and cost effective solution compared to other alternative fuels. It refers as a good gaseous fuel because of its high octane number and self ignition temperature. Though the power output is slightly lesser than the gasoline fuel; its thermal efficiency is better than the gasoline for the same SIE. The research paper highlights the reduction of CO, reasonable outcomes of HC emissions with minor increase in $NO_x$ emissions compared with the gasoline fuel to bi-fuel mode in the SIE that meets the emission challenges.

The objective of this study is to develop and commercialize an on-board fuel storage system for CNG vehicles. A type 4 vessel is made of resin-impregnated continuous filament windings on a polyamide (PA6) liner. In particular, this study localized the PA6 liner's fabrication and development. To analyze the filament winding, a specimen test was performed, and the results were verified values obtained using finite element analysis. In this study, the filament winding and fibers were optimized for a 207 bar composite cylinder in a compressed natural gas vehicle.
KRRI (Korea Railroad Research Institute) is developing a bimodal tram since the 2003s. The vehicle will be used in the public transportation system. The bimodal tram has the advantages of both bus and train. Bus system has the advantages of flexibility of the routes delivering passengers to the destination and easy accessibility. Train is to meet the scheduled arrival and massive public transportations. The vehicle is the rubber tired tram and is all wheel steered single articulation. The propulsion system is configured by CNG hybrid system. The length of the vehicle is 18m. The vehicle lanes will be marked with permanent magnets that are buried in the road. The vehicle can be automatically operated by navigation control system (NCS). In this paper, we introduce the driving system of the bimodal tram which is developed by KRRI.

Bimodal tram is designed to run on a dedicated path in automatic mode using a magnetic track system in order to realize a combination of the accessibility of a bus and the constant regularity of a railroad. This paper presents design and test results of the series hybrid propulsion system of the bimodal tram on both test track and public road, which uses CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) engine and Lithium polymer battery pack. This paper describes the real-time data measuring equipment for the series hybrid propulsion system of the bimodal tram. Using this measurement equipment, the performance of the prototype vehicle's driving on test track and public road was verified and the fuel consumption and the efficiency of CNG engine have been investigated.
I collected the cases of CNG vehicle accidents which had happened for 30 years and analyzed the causes of the accidents according to each type of cylinders. There are about six accidents including three cylinder explosion accidents due to bad heat treatment, one composite damage, one CNG vehicle fire, and one fuel piping accident owing to the poor maintenance. When looking into the cylinder types involved in the accidents and the causes, 29% of the cylinder accidents are Type I and 24% Type IV, 16% Type II, and 14% Type III. 37% of the accidents are caused by the defects of the raw materials and the errors of a manufacturing process, 16% by the stress corrosion cracking as a result of the repetitive use, 15% by the cylinder's explosion on account of the malfunction of PRD(Pressure Relief Device) and the overpressure. The remainders of the causes are fire and unknown causes. Therefore, cylinder manufacturers have to strengthen quality management of raw materials and manufacturing process and painting regardless of each type of cylinder. Also bus operators need to make an effort to keep safety condition through every day check.
Exhaust emissions were characterized for a fleet of 10 alternative-fuel vehicles (AFVx) including 5 compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles. 3 liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) vehicles and 2 85% methanol/15% California Phase 2 gasoline (M85) vehicles. In addition to the standard regulated emissions and detailed speciation of organic gas compounds, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to measure ammonia (NH$_3$) and nitrous oxide ($N_2$O) emissions. NH$_3$, emissions averaged 0.124 g/mi for the vehicle fleet with a range from <0.004 to 0.540 g/mi. $N_2$O emissions averaged 0.022 g/mi over the vehicle fleet with range from <0.002 to 0.077 g/mi. Modal emissions showed that both NH$_3$, and $N_2$O emissions began during catalyst light-off and continued as the catalyst reached its operating temperature. $N_2$O emissions primarily were formed during the initial stages of catalyst light-off. Detailed speciation measurements showed that the principal component of the fuel was also the primary organic gas species found in the exhaust. In particular, methane, propane and methanol composed on average 93%, 79%, and 75% of the organic gas emissions, respectively, for the CNG, LPG. and M85 vehicles.
