  • The modern CNC machine require increasingly an exact monitoring and control of cutting process. They are to make final taret which construct full automation factories as unmanned system. In this study, we decided that we develop new techique to monitor and detect tool breakage on the machining operation using face milling machine with multi-point throwaway tips. The technology in which the tool is illuminated by an beam of Laser is used by image of tool fracture through CCD camera.

  • ISO 14649 (data model for STEP-NC) is a new interface scheme or language for CAD-CAM-CNC chain under established by ISO TC184 SCI. Up to this point, the new language is mainly made for milling and turning, and other processes such as EDM will be completed in the future. Upon completion, it will be used as the international standard language for e-manufacturing paradigm by replacing the old machine-level language, so called M&G code used since 1950's. With the rich information contents included in the new language, various intelligent functions can be made by the CNC as the CNC knows what-to-make and how-to-make. In particular, On-Machine Inspection required for quality assurance in the machine level, can be done based on the information of featurebased tolerance graph. Previously, On-Machine inspection has been investigated mainly for milling operation, and only a few researches were made for turning operation without addressing the data model. In this thesis, we present a feature-based on-machine inspection process by the 4 Tasks: 1) proposing a new schema for STEP-NC data model, 2) converting the conventional tolerance scheme into that of STEP-NC, 3) modifying the tolerance graph such that the tolerance can be effectively measured by the touch probe on the machine, and 4) generating collision-free tool path for actual measurement. Task 1 is required for the incorporation of the presented method in the ISO 14649, whose current version does not much include the detailed schema for tolerance. Based on the presented schema, the tolerance represented in the conventional drafting can be changed to that of STEP-NC (Task 2). A special emphasis was given to Task 3 to make the represented tolerance accurately measurable by the touch probe on the machine even if the part setup is changed. Finally, Task 4 is converting the result of Task into the motion of touch probe. The developed schema and algorithms were illustrated by several examples including that of ISO 14649 Part 12.

  • Pocket machining is metal removal operation commonly used for creating depressions in machined parts. Numerically controlled milling is the primary means for machining complex die surface. These complex surfaces are generated by a milling cutter which removes material as it traces out pre-specified tool paths. To machine, a component on a CNC machine, part programs which define the cutting tool path are needed. This tool path is usually planned from CAD, and converted to a CAM machine input format. In this paper I proposed a new method for generating NC tool paths. This method generates automatically NC tool paths with dynamic elimination of machining errors in 2$\frac{1}{2}$ arbitrary shaped pockets. This paper generates a spiral-like tool path by dynamic computing optimal pocket of the pocket boundary contour based on the type and size of the milling cutter, the geometry of the pocket contour and surface finish tolerance requirements. This part programming system is PC based and simultaneously generates a G-code file.

  • The analysis of acoustic emission signals generated during machining has been proposed as a technique for studying both the fundamentals of the cutting process and process and as a methodology for detecting tool fracture on line. In this study, AE signals detected during End Milling were applied as the experimental test to sensing tool fracture on the CNC vertical milling machine. Because automatic monitoring of the cutting condition is one of the most important technologies in machining, the in-process detection of cutting tool life including fracture has been investigated by performing experimental test.

  • This study describes the geometric characteristics and the 5-axis machining method in order to make end mill cutter coming with insert tips. End mill geometry is consisted of flute part and insert tip part. Flute part modeled by using ruled surfaces with constant helix angle, and insert tip part modeled by rectangular planes containing tapped hole of specified direction in its center. In this study, the modeled insert tip part considered both of a radial rake angle and a axial rake angle, because they were important cutting conditions. In order to machining the virtual end mill defined from geometric characteristics, we programmed a special software to machining the end mill considered in this study. This software can generate NC-codes about following processes, end milling or ball end milling of flute part end milling of rectangular plane, centering of hole, drilling of hole, and tapping of hole. Ant sampled end mills were modeled and machined on 5-axis CNC machining center with two index tables. Since machined end mills were very agreeable to designed end mills, we saw that the method proposed in this study can be very useful for manufacturing of end mill body with insert tip.

  • In this paper, a discrete-time variable structure control method using recursively defined switching function and a decoupled variable structure disturbance compensator is used to achieve high performance circular motion control of a CNC machining center. The discrete-time variable structure control with the decoupled disturbance compensator method developed in this paper uses a recursive switching function defined as the sum of the current tracking error vector and the previous value of the switching function multiplied by a positive constant less than one. This recursive switching function provides much improved performance compared to the method that uses a switching function defined only as a linear combination of the current tracking error. Enhancements in tracking performance are demonstrated in the circular motion control using a CNC milling machine.

  • Increasing demands on precision machining with computerized numerical control (CNC) machines have necessitated that the tool to move not only position error as small as possible, but also with smoothly varying feedrates in space. This paper presents a new high precision interpolation algorithm for 3-dimensional (3D) Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline (NURBS) curve in the reference-pulse CNC technique. Based on the minimum path error strategy, real-time NURBS interpolator was developed in software and this was implemented with a PC-NC milling machine. The several experimental results have shown that the proposed NURBS interpolator is useful for the high precision machining of complex shapes. It is expected that this algorithm can be applied to the CNC machines for the machining of 3D free-form surfaces.

  • A variable structure controller is developed for an AC servo motor used in CNC milling machines. The designed controller is implemented as an outer loop controller to a factory designed motor-servopack system. The robustness parameter is tuned for a fast response when the speed tracking error is large, while it is tuned for small oscillations when the speed tracking error is small. The designed controller is installed on a CNC machine using a PC. Cutting experiments show improved performance over the factory-designed controller.

  • The purpose of this study is to describe the strategy of machining process suitable for developing adaptive control with constraint of NC-machine tool. The algorithm that controls machining process parameters of every sampling time is established for the constraint of torque in machinig center. To prove this AC algorithm, manual AC-unit control test is used for simulating the on-line AC strategy control. Also machining tests are carried out on a CNC-machining center fitted with the ACC system and compared with the simulated results. The practical effectiveness of the ACC systems so discussed and the reduction of machining time are demonstrated with reference to typical models of cutting workpieces. As a typical model, taper and step geometry model are selected. The computer simulation results have a good agreement with the experimental observation and make it possible to develope a NC-machine tool with an on-line ACC system.

  • For the implementation of a smart factory, it is necessary to collect data by connecting various sensors and devices in the manufacturing environment and to diagnose or predict failures in production facilities through data analysis. In this paper, to predict the residual useful lifetime of milling insert used for machining products in CNC machine, weight k-NN algorithm, Decision Tree, SVR, XGBoost, Random forest, 1D-CNN, and frequency spectrum based on vibration signal are investigated. As the results of the paper, the frequency spectrum does not provide a reliable criterion for an accurate prediction of the residual useful lifetime of an insert. And the weighted k-nearest neighbor algorithm performed best with an MAE of 0.0013, MSE of 0.004, and RMSE of 0.0192. This is an error of 0.001 seconds of the remaining useful lifetime of the insert predicted by the weighted-nearest neighbor algorithm, and it is considered to be a level that can be applied to actual industrial sites.
