  • Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb. has long been used for a useful natural agent ameliorating inflammation related symptoms in the folk medicine recipe. This study was performed to investigate effects of Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb.(AP) on the expression of inflammation related genes such as the inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in macrophage cell line, RAW 264.7 cells. The AP (whole plants) was extracted with 80% ethanol and sequentially partitioned with solvents in order to increase polarity. Among the various solvent extracts of AP, the n-butanol (BuOH) fraction showed the most powerful inhibitory ability against nitric oxide (NO) production in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced RAW 264.7 cells without affecting cell viability. Reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction and Western blot analysis revealed that the BuOH fraction provided a primary inhibitor of the iNOS protein and mRNA expression in LPS-induced RAW 264.7 cells. The DPPH and OH radical scavenging activities of the several fractions of 80% ethanol extracts of AP significantly increased by EtOAC and BuOH fractions. Thus, the present study suggests that the response of a component of the BuOH fraction to NO generation via iNOS expression provide an important clue to elucidate anti-inflammatory mechanism of AP.

  • Houttuynia cordata Thunb.[H.cordata]belonging to Saururaceae, is a wild medicinal herb of perennial plants, and grows well in a place with a lot of shade and moisture. The medical action of H.cordata is reported to have an antitumer effect, toxicity-suppressive effect, antifungal effect, diuretic effect, and antioxidative action, but its effect hasn't been reported on cardiovascular diseases, such as ateriosclerosis and hypertension yet. This study intended to confirm the effect of the water extract of H.cordata on the migration and proliferation of rat aortic smooth muscle cells. Such results show that the water extract of H.cordata suppresses the migration and proliferation of rat aortic smooth muscle cells. It is believed that a useful clue will be offered later to the prevention of cardiovascular diseases such as ateriosclerosis and hypertension, and the development of their medicines on the basis of the fact.

  • In a general fractional factorial design, the n-levels of a factor are coded by the $n^{th}$ roots of the unity. Pistone and Rogantin (2007) gave a full generalization to mixed-level designs of the theory of the polynomial indicator function using this device. This article discusses the optimal blocking scheme for nonregular designs. According to hierarchical principle, the minimum aberration (MA) has been used as an important criterion for selecting blocked regular fractional factorial designs. MA criterion is mainly based on the defining contrast groups, which only exist for regular designs but not for nonregular designs. Recently, Cheng et al. (2004) adapted the generalized (G)-MA criterion discussed by Tang and Deng (1999) in studying $2^p$ optimal blocking scheme for nonregular factorial designs. The approach is based on the method of replacement by assigning $2^p$ blocks the distinct level combinations in the column with different blocks. However, when blocking level is not a power of two, we have no clue yet in any sense. As an example, suppose we experiment during 3 days for 12-run Plackett-Burman design. How can we arrange the 12-runs into the three blocks? To solve the problem, we apply G-MA criterion to nonregular mixed-level blocked scheme via the mixed-level indicator function and give an answer for the question.

  • Strongyloides stercoralis is a human intestinal parasite which may lead to complicated strongyloidiasis in immunocompromised. Here, a case of complicated strongyloidiasis in a patient with chronic lymphocytic leukemia is reported. Presence of numerous S. stercoralis larvae in feces and sputum confirmed the diagnosis of hyperinfection syndrome in this patient. Following recovery of filariform larvae from agar plate culture of the stool, the isolate was characterized for the ITS1 region of ribosomal DNA gene by nested-PCR and sequencing. Albendazole therapy did not have cure effects; and just at the beginning of taking ivermectin, the patient died. The most important clue to prevent such fatal consequences is early diagnosis and proper treatment.

  • A case of hepatic hemangioma is presented in which blood pool imaging by $^{99m}Tc$-HSA provided a definite diagnostic clue. Cavernous hemangiomas are the most common benign tumor of the liver. But the majority of them are asymptomatic and are found incidentally at laparotomy or autopsy. Selective hepatic arteriogrophy has been the most helpful technique for the preoperative diagnosis. Recently radioisotope scan and ultrasonogram proved to be a new, definite and non-invasive diagnostic procedure.

  • The mechanism of urinary excretion of sulfadiazine was investigated in the dogs by means of stop-flow technique Results of experiments were summarized as follows; 1. The ratios of U/P sulfadiazine to U/P creatinine $(U/P_{SD}:U/P_{cr})$ were always lower than 1 in all nephrons, showed a minimum in the proximal area. 2. $U/P_{SD}:U/P_{cr}$ were not affected by Probenecid or 2.4-DNP, whereas increased significantly by administration of sodium bicarbonate. 3. Probenecid did not alter the stop-flow patterns in alkalotic dog too. 4. $C_{SD}$ (clearance of sulfadiazine ) was appreciably influenced by change in urinary PH, or flow rate. All evidences lead to the conclusion that sulfadiazine reabsorption is passively transported by proximal tubules. No clue for active process, either secretory or reabsorptive, was obtained.

  • Stabilization of liposomes against degradation by bile salts has been investigated in order to develop a liposomal model system for oral drug delivery. Two polysaccharides, amylopectin (AP) and chitin (CT), were employed to coat both empty liposomes and bromthymol blue (BTB)-encapsulated liposomes by adsorption-coating techniques. Turbidity changes and BTB-release characteristics in pH 5.6 buffer solutions with or without bile salts, sodium cholate and sodium glycocholate, were observed to compare the differences between uncoated liposomes and polysaccharide-coated liposomes. Initial turbidities of both uncoated and polysaccharide-coated liposomes in buffer solution were kept constant within 3% range during 4 hours of experiments. But they were decreased in a different manner in bile salts-containing buffer solutions, showing 10% or less decrease for polysaccharide-coated liposomes and 25% or more decrease for uncoated liposomes. BTB release from uncoated liposomes has been greatly increased upto 90% after 4 hours in bile salts-containing buffer solution, which is a clue for breakdown of liposomal vesicles. However, polysaccharide-coated liposomes showed the controlled-release pattern which is proportional to square-root of time, followed by around 50% release for the same time period. Consequently, it is possible to conclude that these polysaccharide-coated liposomes might be an available system for oral delivery of a drug which is unstable in gut environment.

  • The purpose of this article was to research the difference in additional marketing satisfaction by lifestyle of Korean restaurant customers (focus on foreign students at university in Gangwon province). In this research, factor analysis, cluster analysis, and ANOVA were carried out. Lifestyle was divided into seven factors and six clusters. Additional marketing satisfaction was divided into three factors. Additional marketing satisfaction showed a significant difference by lifestyle of foreign students. First, 'employee' had a highest point at C3 'convenience internet searching pursuit' but lowest point at C4 'brand preference pursuit' (p<0.001). 'Service process' had a highest point at C1 'safety health pursuit' but lowest point at C5 'effort pursuit' (p<0.001). 'Tangible clue' had a highest point at C3 'convenience internet searching pursuit' but lowest point at C5 'effort pursuit' (p<0.001). Additional marketing can reduce customer uncertainty, ambiguities, and wavering about eating at restaurants by intangibility of service. As a result, food-service corporations need to manage additional marketing as well as increase satisfaction and loyalty of customers.

  • An attempt was made in the Veeranam freshwater lake with the objectives to collect, identify, describe and document the algae occurring from March 2007 to August 2007. Qualitative and quantitative characterization of phytoplankton and analysis of physico-chemical parameters of water samples were carried out at monthly intervals during the study period in the western and eastern sides of the lake. It was found that the phytoplankton community embraced 68 genera belonging to four classes viz., Bacillariophyceae (40), Chlorophyceae (22), Cynophyceae (4) and Euglenophyceae (2). There were significant influences of various physico-chemical parameters on the phytoplankton population density. Commonly occurred genera, Oscillatoria (Cyanophyceae), Navicula (Bacillariophyceae) and Scenedesmus (Chlorophyceae), were subjected to energy dispersive spectroscopic analysis (EDS). They were found to accumulate different elements such as Zn, P, S, Ca, Mg, Fe, N, Si, Cl and Mn. Among these the member Cyanophyceae contained Zn, P, Mg, Ca, Mn, S and N. Bacillariophyceae Si, Zn, Mg, Cl, N, Fe, and Ca. Chlorophyceae Ca, Mg, N, Fe, Cl, Zn, Si and Mn. Thus these observations would determine the chemical dialogue between the cell structures and role of the elements. Further, it gives the clue about the phytoplankton growth requirements.
