  • Conventionally embedded devices used simple operating system (OS); however, the number of embedded devices using Linux as OS is increasing to keep up with hardware's performance improvement and customer's various needs. While embedded devices using Linux can take advantage of expandability, generality, portability, Linux's flexibility nature may cause undesirable overheads because of its increased complexity. One such overhead makes boot stage optimization essential in most embedded systems, where many features are redundant and possible to be removed or reconfigured. This paper applies well-known software optimization technique for Linux's boot stage to an CLM9722 DTK, measures the results, and studies about limitation of such techniques from hardware dependancy on the standard framework of Linux. The booting time from power-on until completion were decreased by 33% approximately.

  • The surface runoff is one of the important components for the surface water balance. However, most Land Surface Models(LSMs), coupled to climate models at a large scale for the prediction and prevention of disasters caused by climate changes, simplistically estimate surface runoff from the soil water budget. Ignoring the role of surface flow depth on the infiltration rate causes errors in both surface and subsurface flow calculations. Therefore, for the comprehensive terrestrial water and energy cycle predictions in LSMs, a conjunctive surface-subsurface flow model at a large scale is developed by coupling a 1-D diffusion wave model for surface flow with the 3-D Volume Averaged Soil-moisture Transport(VAST) model for subsurface flow. This paper describes the new conjunctive surface-subsurface flow formulation developed for improvement of the prediction of surface runoff and spatial distribution of soil water by topography, along with basic schemes related to the terrestrial hydrologic system in Common Land Model(CLM), one of the state-of-the-art LSMs.

  • This paper propose how to track the position of the observer to control the viewing zone using an adaptive parallax barrier. The pose is estimated using a Constrained Local Model based on the shape model and Landmark for robust eye-distance measurement in the face pose. Camera's correlation converts distance and horizontal location to centimeter. The pixel pitch of the adaptive parallax barrier is adjusted according to the position of the observer's eyes, and the barrier is moved to adjust the viewing area. This paper propose a method for tracking the observer in the range of 60cm to 490cm, and measure the error, measurable range, and fps according to the resolution of the camera image. As a result, the observer can be measured within the absolute error range of 3.1642cm on average, and it was able to measure about 278cm at 320×240, about 488cm at 640×480, and about 493cm at 1280×960 depending on the resolution of the image.

  • The performance of Community Land Model version 3.5 - Dynamic Global Vegetation Model (CLM-DGVM) was evaluated through a comparison with the observation over temperate deciduous forest in Gwangneung, Korea. Influence of plant phenology, composition of plant functional type, and climate variability on carbon exchanges was also examined through sensitivity test. To get equilibrium carbon storage, the model was run for 400 years driven by the observed atmospheric data at the deciduous forest of the year 2006. We run the model for 2006 with the equilibrium carbon storage at Gwangneung forest and compared the model output with the observation. A comparison of leaf area index (LAI) between the model and observation indicated that the simulated phenology poorly represented the timing of budburst, leaf-fall, and evolution of LAI. Senescence of the phenology was delayed about four weeks and the simulated maximum LAI (of 5.8 $m^2$ $m^{-2}$) was greater than the observed value (of 4.5 $m^2$ $m^{-2}$). The overestimated LAI contributed to overestimation of both gross primary productivity (GPP) and ecosystem respiration $(R_e)$ through increased photosynthesis and foliar autotropic respiration $(R_a)$, respectively. Despite the discrepancy between the simulated and observed LAI, the simulated tree carbon storage amounts were comparable with the reported values at the site. Change in plant phenology from the simulated to the observed reduced more than six weeks of the plant growth period, resulting in the decreased amount of GPP and $R_e$. These values, however, were still higher (~10% of GPP and 40% of $R_e$) than the observed values. The effect of change in plant functional type composition (from dominant temperate deciduous forest to the coexistence of temperate deciduous and needle leaf forests) on the estimated amount of GPP and $R_e$ was marginal. The influence of climate variability on carbon storage amounts was not significant. The simulated inter-annual variation of GPP and $R_e$ from 1994 to 2003 depended on annual mean air temperature and total radiation but not on precipitation. Other deficiencies of CLM3.5-DGVM have been discussed.

  • In this paper, a new quadrilateral 5-node non-conforming membrane element with drilling degrees of freedom is presented. The main advantage of these elements is the relatively small number of integration points to evaluate a stiffness matrix comparing to the existing transition membrane elements (CLM elements). Moreover, the presented elements pass the patch test by virtue of the Direct Modification Method incorporated into the element formulation. The presented 5-node elements are proved to be very efficient when used in the local mesh refinement for the in-plane structures which have stress concentrations. And some numerical studies also show the good performance of the new element developed in this study.

  • A variable-node-flat shell element designated as CLS which has variable mid-side nodes with drilling freedom has been presented in this paper. The shell element to be applied in finite element analysis has been developed by combining a membrane element named as CLM with drilling rotation d.o.f. and plate bending element. The combined shell element possess six degrees of freedom per node. By introducing the variable-node elements which have physical midside nodes, some difficulties associated with imposing displacement constraints on irregular nodes to enforce interelement compatibility in common adaptive h-refinement on quadrilateral mesh are easily overcome. Detailed numerical studies show the excellent performance of the new shell elements developed in this study.

  • A fast dissolving tablet was developed using the freeze-drying technique. Hyeonggaeyeongyotang was selected as a model oriental medicine. Formulation and processing parameters were studied to obtain freeze-dried tablet with high drug loading, good palatability, and fast disintegration time. $Kollidon^{(R)}$ CLM served as both matrix former and taste masking agent. Ethanol used as co-solvent, decreased the disintegration time of tablet. Aspartame was employed to impart better taste. Drying condition was found to have a major effect in the morphology of the tablets. Freeze-drying process was optimized to decrease the processing time and improve the appearance of the tablets.

  • In this study, an improved 8-node flat shell element is presented for the analysis of shell structure, by combining 8-node membrane element with drilling degree-of-freedom and 8-node plate bending element based on the recently presented technique. Firstly, 8-node membrane element designated as CLM8 is presented in this paper. The element has drilling degree-of.freedom in addition to transitional degree-of-freedom. Therefore the element possesses 3 degrees-of-freedom per each node which as well as the improvement of the element behavior, permits an easy connection to other element with rotational degree-of -freedom. Secondly. 8-node flat shell element was composed by adding 8-node Mindlin plate bending element to the membrane element. The behavior of the introduced plate bending element is further improved by combined use of nonconforming displacement modes, selectively reduced integration scheme and assumed shear strain fields. The element passes in the patch test, doesn't show spurious mechanism and doesn't produce shear locking phenomena. Finally, Numerical examples are presented to show the performance of flat shell element developed in the present study.

  • A nonlinear anile element formulation of flat shell elements with drilling d.o.f, is presented for the geometrical nonlinear analysis of thin-walled structures. The shell element to be applied in finite element analysis was developed by combining a membrane element named as CLM with drilling rotation d.o.f, and plate bending element. The combined shell element possesses six degrees of freedom per node. The element showed the excellent performance in the linear analysis of the folded plate structures, in which the normal rotational rigidity of folded plates is considered, therefore, using this element geometrical nonlinear analysis of those structures is fulfilled in this study. An incremental total Larangian approach is adopted through out in which displacements are referred to the original configuration. Comparing the results with those of other researches shows the performance of this element and a folded plate structure is analyzed as an example.
