  • We studied the aquation reaction of s-cis-$[Co(eee)Cl_2]^+$ and s-cis-$[Co(eee)Br_2]^+$ complex ions under the various temperatures and pressures. In these complexes eee is $NH_2-CH_2CH_2-S-CH_2CH_2-NH_2$. The rate law of the aquation reactions of these two complexes obeys $Rate = k_{obsd}$[CO(III)], where rate constants of s-cis-$Co(eee)Cl_2]^+$ and s-cis-$[Co(eee)Br_2]^+$ respectively are $0.687{\times}10^{-4}$ $sec^{-1}$ and $4.10{\times}10^{-4}$ $sec^{-1}$ in condition of 0.1M $HClO_4\;and\;40^{\circ}C$. In the same condition, the activation entropies of s-cis-[Co(eee)$Cl_2$]+ and s-cis-(Co(eee)Br_2$]+ complexes respectively are -15.5 eu and -7.54eu, and the activation volumes are $-4.6cm^3mole^{-1}$ and $-4.2cm^3mole^{-1}$. From these data, we could infer the mechanism of the aquation reaction as the interchange dissociation (Id) mechanism.

  • Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) caused by Leishmania donovani is an endemic vector-borne disease in Sri Lanka. Over 2,500 cases have been reported since 2000 and the number of CL cases has dramatically increased annually. Total 57 clinically suspected CL patients attending the dermatology clinic in Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital were recruited from January to June 2015. Slit skin smears and skin biopsies were taken from each of the subjects. Clinical and epidemiological data were obtained using interviewer administered questionnaire. Forty-three (75.4%) patients among 57 were confirmed positive for L. donovani. The majority (77%) of infected patients was males, and the most affected age group was 21-40 years. Soldiers in security forces, farmers, and housewives were identified as high risk groups. The presence of scrub jungles around the residence or places of occupation (P=0.003), the presence of sandflies (P=0.021), and working outsides more than 6 hr per day (P=0.001) were significantly associated with CL. The number of lesions ranged from 1-3, and the majority (76%) of the patients had a single lesion. Upper and lower extremities were the prominent places of lesions, while the wet type of lesions were more prevalent in females (P=0.022). A nodular-ulcerative type lesion was common in both sexes. The presence of sandflies, scrub jungles, and outdoor activities contributed to spread of Leishmania parasites in an endemic pattern. Implementation of vector control programs together with health education with regard to transmission and prevention of CL are necessary to control the spread of this infection.

  • The effect of cadmium chloride $(CdCl_2)$ on the expression of E-cadherin was examined in bEnd.3 mouse brain endothelial cells. $CdCl_2$ induced $PGE_2$ release, which were blocked by non-steroidal antinflamatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as indomethacin and NS398 indicating the expression of COX-2 might contribute to $PGE_2$ production. $CdCl_2$ decreased the expression of E-cadherin, but not VE-cadherin at levels of mRNA and protein. Reduced expression level of E-cadherin was restored by NSAIDs, which was reversed by the addition of $PGE_2$. $CdC_2$-induced decrease of E-cadherin level was also recovered by antioxidants including N-acetylcyteine (NAC) and trolox. Together with previous report which showed $CdCl_2$ induced COX-2 expression in a cellular oxidative stress dependent manner, these data suggest that $CdCl_2$ decreases E-cadherin expression through induction of cellular oxidative stress and in turn COX-2 expression in brain endothelial cells.

  • The importance of including spin-orbit interactions for the correct description of structures and vibrational frequencies of haloiodomethanes is demonstrated by density functional theory calculations with spin-orbit relativistic effective core potentials (SO-DFT). The vibrational frequencies and the molecular geometries obtained by SO-DFT calculations do not match with the experimental results as well as for other cations without significant relativistic effects. In this sense, the present data can be considered as a guideline in the development of the relativistic quantum chemical methods. The influence of spin-orbit effects on the bending frequency of the cation could well be recognized by comparing the experimental and calculated results for $CH_2BrI$ and $CH_2ClI$ cations. Spin-orbit effects on the geometries and vibrational frequencies of $CH_2XI$ (X=F, Cl, Br, and I) neutral are negligible except that C-I bond lengths of haloiodomethane neutral is slightly increased by the inclusion of spin-orbit effects. The $^2A^{\prime}$ and $^2A^{{\prime}{\prime}}$ states were found in the cations of haloiodomethanes and mix due to the spin-orbit interactions and generate two $^2E_{1/2}$ fine-structure states. The geometries of $CH_2XI^+$ (X=F and Cl) from SO-DFT calculations are roughly in the middle of two cation geometries from DFT calculations since two cation states of $CH_2XI$ (X=F and Cl) from DFT calculations are energetically close enough to mix two cation states. The geometries of $CH_2XI^+$ (X=Br and I) from SO-DFT calculations are close to that of the most stable cation from DFT calculations since two cation states of $CH_2XI$(X=Br and I) from DFT calculations are energetically well separated near the fine-structure state minimum.

  • Experimental data are reported for charging and collection of NaCl aerosols in the 0.03- to $0.2{\mu}m$-geometric-mean-diameter range in 2-stage parallel-plate electrostatic precipitators. The NaCl aerosols are generated with geometric standard deviation of about 1.74 and particle generation rate of about 10^9 particles/see by the constant output atomizer and injected into the air flow in the clean wind-tunnel. The 2-stage parallel-plate electrostatic precipitator installed in the test section of the wind-tunnel is operated with a positive corona discharge. The NaCl aerosols in the channel flow are sampled and transported to the aerosol particle number concentration measurement system by using the isoaxial sampling and transport system constructed based on the Okazaki and Willeke design. The aerosol particle number concentration measurement system measures the size distribution of submicrometer aerosols by an electrical mobility detection technique. It is confirmed from comparing the measured collection efficiencies in this study and the predicted ones by our previous theoretical analysis that the predicted collection efficiencies agree well with the experimental ones. It is also found from the comparison that below about $0.02{\mu}m$ all particles are not charged and the uncharged particles are not collected, and consequently 2-stage parallel-plate electrostatic precipitators are not suitable for that particle size range.

  • The northern boundary of the Tsusgima Current and its fluctuations are divcussed in the Japan Sea in summer. This current was characterized with high slinity, and its path was traced by following the salinity maximum on the basis of oceanographical data collected during the period from 1963 to 1979. The salinity maxima (34.45-34.85 ) of the Tsushima Current in the areas between 29 N in the East China Sea and northern part of the Japan Sea were found at depths between 46m and 135m. The representative thermosteric anomaly corresponding to the salinity maximum eas examined in order to analyze the advection of this currint. In the Tsushima Current region in the Japan Sen, the thermosteric anomaly values in the layer of salinity maximum during the period of 1970 to 1979 was beween 220 cl/t and 260 cl/t. In general, as the current moves northward its salinity decreascs, its thermosteric anomaly decreases and the depth of salinity maximum becomes shallower. The northern boundary of this current, which is indicated by 34.4 isohaline on 240 cl/t isanosteric surface during the study period of ten years, was confined to south of 40 N of the Japan Sea. The 34.4 isohaline edvealed two types of flow; one of them flows northward along the eastern coast of South Korea and then meanders eastward, while the oter flows basically northeastward along the coast of Japan. The meanders of northern boundary of this currint idrntified th isohaline in this word were nearly similar to those studied by others on the bases of isotherm analysis.

  • Polygalacturonase(PG) was extracted from Chinese cabbage and partially purified by ammonium sulfate fractionation and ion-exchange chromatography. Three fractions, D-PG, C-1 PG, and C-2 PG, were separated by CM-Sephadex C-25 column chromatography and FPLC Mono Q HR 5/5 or Mono S HR 5/5 column and their physicochemical characteristics were investigated. All three fractions had optimum pH and temperature of 4.5 and $65^{\circ}C$, and were stable in the range of pH $4.5{\sim}8.0$. These fractions were inhibited by 0.8mM $CaCl_2$ or 0.6M NaCl. In the thermal inactivation of PC isozymes at $65{\sim}80^{\circ}C$, z-values were $8.4{\sim}9.3^{\circ}C$ and D-values at $80^{\circ}C$ were In the range of $120{\sim}126s$. Thermodynamic constants were calculated from thermal inactivation data of the isozymes and were applicable to estimation of thermal process time of retort pouched Kimchi.

  • This study proposed a new electrolytic reduction technology that is based on the integration of simultaneous uranium oxide metallization and Li$_2$O electrowinning. In this electrolytic reduction reaction, electrolytically reduced Li deposits on cathode and simultaneously reacts with uranium oxides to produce uranium metal showing more than 99% conversion. For the verification of process feasibility, the experiments to obtain basic data on the metallization of uranium oxide, investigation of reaction mechanism, the characteristics of closed recycle of Li$_2$O and mass transfer were carried out. This evolutionary electrolytic reduction technology would give benefits over the conventional Li-reduction process improving economic viability such as: avoidance of handling of chemically active Li-LiCl molten salt increase of metallization yield, and simplification of process.

  • ZrN nanoparticles were prepared by an exothermic reduction of $ZrCl_4$ with $NaN_3$ in the presence of NaCl flux in a nitrogen atmosphere. Using a solid-state combustion approach, we have demonstrated that the zirconium nitride nanoparticles synthesis process can be completed in only several minutes compared with a few hours for previous synthesis approaches. The chemistry of the combustion process is not complex and is based on a metathesis reaction between $ZrCl_4$ and $NaN_3$. Because of the low melting and boiling points of the raw materials it was possible to synthesize the ZrN phase at low combustion temperatures. It was shown that the combustion temperature and the size of the particles can be readily controlled by tuning the concentration of the NaCl flux. The results show that an increase in the NaCl concentration (from 2 to 13 M) results in a temperature decrease from 1280 to $750^{\circ}C$. ZrN nanoparticles have a high surface area (50-70 $m^2/g$), narrow pore size distribution, and nano-particle size between 10 and 30 nm. The activation energy, which can be extracted from the experimental combustion temperature data, is: E = 20 kcal/mol. The method reported here is self-sustaining, rapid, and can be scaled up for a large scale production of a transition metal nitride nanoparticle system (TiN, TaN, HfN, etc.) with suitable halide salts and alkali metal azide.
