  • Aluminum member absorbs energy by stable plastic deformation under axial loading. While CFRP(Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics) member absorbs energy by unstable brittle failure but its specific strength and stiffness is higher than those of aluminum member. In this study, for complement of detects and synergy effect by combination with the advantages of each member, the axial collapse tests were performed for aluminum CFRP members which are composed of aluminum members wrapped with CFRP outside aluminum circular members. Based on the respective collapse characteristics of aluminum and CFRP members, crushing behavior and energy absorption characteristics were analyzed for aluminum CRRP members which have different CFRP fiber orientation angle and thickness Test results showed that aluminum CFRP members supplemented the unstable brittle failure of CFRP members due to ductile nature of inner aluminum members. It turned out that the CFRP fiber orientation angle and thickness influence energy absorption capability together with the collapse mode of the members.

  • This aims to examine experimentally the absorption behavior and strength of circular CFRP members with different stacking configurations on exposure to a separate impact velocity. In addition, considered the dynamic characteristics. Circular and square CFRP members were prepared from 8-ply unidirectional prepreg sheets stacked at different angles ($0^{\circ}/90^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}/0^{\circ}$, where the $0^{\circ}$ direction coincides with the axis of the member) and interface numbers (2, 4, and 6). Based on the collapse characteristics of the circular CFRP members. In this study, for the circular members, the impact energies at crosshead speeds of 5.52 m/s, 5.14 m/s, and 4.57 m/s are 611.52 J, 529.2 J, and 419.44 J (at circular members), respectively. Likewise, for the square members, the impact energies at crosshead speeds of 2.16 m/s, 1.85 m/s, and 1.67 m/s are 372.4 J, 274.4 J, and 223.44 J (at square members).

  • In this study, one type of circular shaped composite tube was used, combined with reinforcing foam and without foam. Furthermore, CFRP(Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic) circular member manufactured from CFRP prepreg sheet for lightweight design. CFRP is an anisotropic material which is the most widely adapted lightweight structural member. The crashworthy behavior of circular composite material tubes subjected to static axial compression under same conditions is reported in this paper. Test was executed in order to compare the results to the energy absorption and collapse shape. The collapse mode during the failure process were observed and analyzed. The behavior of polymeric foams to the tubes crashworthiness were also investigated. According to the experimental results, specimens filled with foam are higher total energy absorption than the other specimens not filled with the foam.

  • The recent trend of vehicle design aims at crash safety and environmentally-friendly aspect. For the crash safety aspect, energy absorbing members should be absorbed with collision energy sufficiently. But vehicle structure must be light weight for the environmentally-friendly aspect, in order to improve fuel efficiency and to reduce tail gas emission. Therefore, the light weight of vehicle must be achieved in a status of securing safety of crash. An aluminum or CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics) is representative one among the light-weight materials. In this study, impact collapse behavior of circular hybrid thin-walled member is evaluated. The hybrid members are manufactured by wrapping CFRP prepreg sheets outside the aluminum circular members in the autoclave. Because the CFRP is an anisotropic material whose mechanical properties change with its stacking condition, special attention is given to the effects of the stacking condition on the collapse behavior evaluation of the hybrid thin-walled member. Collapse mode and energy absorption capability of the hybrid thin-walled member are analyzed with change of the fiber orientation angle and interface number.

  • Carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) has many desirable qualities, including being lightweight and very strong. These characteristics have led to its use in applications ranging from small consumer products to vehicles. Circular and square CFRP members were fabricated using 8ply unidirectional prepreg sheets stacked at different angles ($[+15^{\circ}/-15^{\circ}]_4$, $[+45^{\circ}/-45^{\circ}]_4$ and $[90]_8$, where $0^{\circ}$ coincides with the axis of the member). Based on the collapse characteristics of a CFRP circular member, the collapse characteristics and energy absorption capability were analyzed. Impact collapse tests were carried out for each section member. In this study, the impact energies at crossheads speeds of 5.52 m/s, 5.14 m/s and 4.57 m/s were 611.52 J, 529.2 J and 419.44 J (circular member) 2.16 m/s, 1.85 m/s and 1.67 m/s are 372.4 J, 274.4 J and 223.44 J (square member). The purpose is to experimentally examine the absorption behavior and evaluation the strength in relation to changes in the stacking configuration when the CFRP circular members with different stacking configurations were exposed to various impact velocities. In addition, the dynamic characteristics were considered.

  • In this study, in order to measure energy-absorbing charactistics in collapse test of CFRP thin-walled laminates and interpretate the cause of decreasing age when collapse test is carried out under the environments of high temperatures and hygrothermals, the moisture absorbing behavior according to the variety of orientation angel is observed and collapse characteristics is compared with the influence of high temperatures and hygrothermals. Especially, we supposed to clearly understand reationship between collapse characteristics in proportion to the variety of orientation angel and moisture absorbing. The value of the maximum loading, mean loading, rate of energy absorption energy per unit volume and mass in CFRP thin-walled laminates on the high temperatures and hygrothermals is measured lower than under no moisture absorbing. The maximum collapse loading in dynamic impact test is taken measurement lower than in static collapse test regarding compared with collapse characteristics conformity with the variety of the CFRP circular laminates in high temperatures and hygrothermals. But the absorbed energy per unit mass and volume is almost same and the biggest amount of energy is shown in the CFRP circular laminates with orientation angel of 15 .deg.. Therefore, in the case of use to CFRP circular laminates with axisymmetric mode, CFRP thin-walled structal members with orientation angel of 10 .deg. , 15 . deg. are generally useful.

  • In this study, in order to measure energy-absorbing characteristics in impact test of CFRP thin-walled laminates and interpret the cause of decreasing age when collapse test is carried out under the environments of high temperatures and hygrothermals, the moisture absorbing behavior according to the variety of orientation angle is observed and impact collapse characteristics of no moisture absorbing status is compared with that under the environments of high temperatures and hygrothermals. Especially, we try to obtain quantitative design data to develop CFRP thin-walled laminates with energy characteristics of optimum impact absorbing. The value of the maximum loading, mean loading, rate of energy absorption energy per unit volume and mass in CFRP thin-walled laminates on the high temperatures and hygrothermals is measured much lower than under no moisture absorbing. Therefore, in the case of using CFRP circular laminates with axisymmetric mode, CFRP thin-walled structural members with orientation angle of $10^{\circ}$, $15^{\circ}$ has generally best condition.

  • In this paper, the crushing tests of circular tubes under axial impact loading are conducted to investigate the energy absorption abilities. A cross head with 18kg launched by the compressed air collides against circular tubes. Circular tubes used for this experiment are Al and CFRP laminates, which have 8 ply with $15^{\circ}$ and $45^{\circ}$. The absorbed energy unit mass and volume of the CFRP specimen with $15^{\circ}$ are higher than those of aluminum specimen. CFRP specimen having small stacking angle have better energy absorption abilities than that of large stacking angle.

  • In the present study, we aimed to obtain design data that can be used for the side members of lightweight cars by experimentally examining the types of effects that the changes in the section shape and outermost layer of an aluminum (Al)/carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) composite structural member have on its collapse characteristics. We have drawn the following conclusions based on the test results: The circular Al/CFRP composite impact-absorbing member in which the outermost layer angle was laminated at $0^{\circ}$ was observed to be 52.9 and 49.93 higher than that of the square and hat-shaped members, respectively. In addition, the energy absorption characteristic of the circular Al/CFRP composite impact-absorbing member in which the outermost layer angle was laminated at $90^{\circ}$ was observed to be 50.49 and 49.2 higher than that of the square and hat-shaped members, respectively.
