  • This paper describes the results of experiments to analyze the free vibration of the laminated composite and hybrid composite plates with various shapes and boundary conditions. The materials of specimens were the carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP), the glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP), the GFRP-Aluminum hybrid composite and the CFRP-CFRP hybrid composite. The natural frequencies and nodal patterns of plates with various shapes were experimentally obtained by impact exciting test using an impact hammer and an accelerometer. The experimental results were presented with normalized frequency parameters. The effects of composite material properties, fiber orientation angles, various geometrical shapes and boundary conditions on the vibration characteristics of composite plates were evaluated. To compare and verify these experimental results, the finite element analysis was carried out, and was well agreed with experimental results.

  • In this study, the inhomogeneous material composed of CFRP(carbon fiber reinforced plastic) and structural metal of SM45C is used for the light material. The finite element analysis on the basis of compact tension test was carried out by using the composite material for sandwich type bonded with the unidirectional CFRP that differs in fiber stacking angle at both sides with the core of SM 45C. CT test is the representative method to confirm the fracture behaviour due to crack in material under the load. The effect on crack and hole must be investigated in order to apply inhomogeneous material to mechanical structure. As the result of this study, the fracture behaviour by CT test of the composite material for sandwich was studied by simulation analysis. The sandwich composite of unidirectional CFRP with the stacking angle of [0/60/-60/0] has the superior strength and the maximum equivalent stress of about 182GPa.Also, the esthetic sense can be shown as the designed factor of shape with composite material is grafted onto the convergence technique.

  • In this research, to develope the A1 7075/CFRP multilayered hybrid composites, CRALL(Carbon Reinforced aluminum lamiate) specimens were processed by autoclavecuring system that curing temperature, time, surface pretreatment condition of aluminum were constant. Andthe fatigye life and failure mechanism on CFRP volume fraction and fiber orientation of CRALLspecimens were investigated. A fatigue life was greatly influenced by effect of CFRP fiber volume fraction but it was less effected than those of fiber orientation. The fatigue failure arised from interface delamination of CFRP and aluminum sheet after shear fracture of aluminum layer. The failure mechanism is assumed that the aluminum laminates which divide the CFRP into many thim layers tend to arrest the failure propagation.

  • FMLC(Fiber-Metal Laminate Composites) is a new structural material combining thin metal laminate with adhesive fiber prepreg, it nearly include all the advantage of metallic materials, for example: good plasticity, impact resistance, processibility, light weight and excellent fatigue properties. This research studied the optimum design of the FMLC subject to various loading conditions using genetic algorithm. The finite element method based on the shear deformation theory was used for the analysis of FMLC. Tasi-Hill failure criterion and Miser yield criterion were taken as fitness functions of the fiber prepreg and the metal laminate, respectively. The design variables were fiber orientation angles. In genetic algorithm, the tournament selection and the uniform crossover method were used. The elitist model was also used to be effective evolution strategy and the creeping random search method was adopted in order to approach a solution with high accuracy. Optimization results were given for various loading conditions and compared with CFRP(Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic). The results show that the FMLC is more excellent than the CFRP in point and uniform loading conditions and it is more stable to unexpected loading because the deviation of failure index is smaller than that of CFRP.

  • CFRP composite materials have been widely used in various fields of engineering because of their excellent properties. They show high specific stiffness and specific strength compared with metallic materiasl. Woven CFRP composite materials are fabricated from carbon fibers with two orientation angles ($0^{\circ}/90^{\circ}$), which influences the mechanical properties. Therefore, woven CFRP composite materials show different types of fracture behavior according to the load direction. Therefore, the fracture behavior of these materials needs to be evaluated according to the load direction when designing structures using these materials. In this study, we evaluate the fracture strength of plain-woven CFRP composite materials according to the load direction. We performed tests for six different angles (load direction: $0^{\circ}/90^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}/-60^{\circ}$, $+45^{\circ}/-45^{\circ}$) and estimated the fracture strength for an arbitrary fiber angle by using the modified Tan's theory and harmonic function.

  • This paper presents the fatigue behavior of composite materials with impact-induced damage. The impact damage parameter is proposed to evaluate the effect of impact damage on fatigue life. Subsequently, a new model is developed to predict the fatigue life of impacted composite materials. Also, a stochastic model is proposed to describe the variation of fatigue life due to the material nonhomogeneity. For these models, the fatigue tests were performed on the unimpacted and impacted composite materials, The effect of impact damage on fatigue life can be characterized by the impact damage parameter. Additionally, the results by the present fatigue life prediction model agree will with experimental results regardless of applied impact energy. Also, the variation of fatigue life can be described by the present stochastic model and is reduced with applied impact energy.

  • The understanding of impact-induced delamination is important in safety and reliability of composite structure. In this study, a model for arrest toughness is proposed in consideration of fracture behavior of composite materials. Also, the probabilistic model is proposed to describe the variability of arrest toughness due to the nonhomogeneity of material. For these models, experiments were conducted on the Carbon/Epoxy composite plates with various thickness using the impact hammer. The elastic work factor used in J-Integral is applicable to the evaluation of energy release rate. The fracture behavior can be described by crack arrest concept and the arrest toughness is independent of the delamination size. Additionally, a probabilistic characteristics of arrest toughness is well described by the Weibull distribution function. A variation of arrest toughness increases with specimen thickness.
