  • Aluminum plate-fin heat exchangers (ALPHEs) are widely used in petroleum and gas-treated processes. The performance of the ALPHE is strongly dependent on the distribution characteristics of the header and the distributors of each fluid. In this paper, we define the aspect ratio in the side-entry type distributor and analyze the distribution characteristics using CFD-based numerical methods. The phenomena of velocity deviation and distribution with the aspect ratio and the inlet Reynolds number were analyzed by applying relative and absolute maldistribution parameters, and an optimum aspect ratio with the inlet Reynolds number was presented.

  • Vehicle washer heater system is more widely adopted to defrost a window or to clear the windshield glass in winter season. The washer heater system should be designed to heat up washer fluid rapidly to the target temperature for only a short time. A numerical analysis has been carried out to analyze the heat transfer characteristics with materials of inside parts in vehicle washer heater system with filler and flow path. ANSYS - FLUENT software is employed for the analysis. The axial symmetry model is three-dimensional and unsteady. It applies to the coupled method which is one of pressure based. Through this result, it was obtained to find the optimal material condition for the filler and flow path in washer system. For material of filler, the air with lower density was heated more rapidly rather than silicon carbide(SiC). For material of flow path, copper with the heat transfer coefficient of approximately four times greater than the nickel gives us higher efficiency. That is the reason why the heating time of methanol was reduced to make uniform temperature in washer heater system.

  • In this paper, stress distribution for a structurally stable greenhouse is considered in the present paper with subsequent investigation into the detailed stress distribution contour with the variation of self-weight and wind pressure level designation method under wind velocity of less than 30 m/sec. For reliable analysis, wind pressure coefficients of a single greenhouse unit were modeled and compared with experiment with correlation coefficient greater than 0.99. Wind load level was designated twofold: direct mapping of fluid dynamic analysis and conversion of modeled results into wind pressure coefficients ($C_P$). Finally, design criteria of EN1991-1-4 and NEN3859 were applied in terms of their wind pressure coefficients for comparison. $C_P$ of CFD result was low in the most of the modeled area but was high only in the first roof wind facing and the last lee facing areas. Besides, structural analysis results were similar in terms of stress distribution as per EN and direct mapping while NEN revealed higher level of stress for the last roof area. The maximum stress levels are arranged in decreasing order of mapping, EN, and NEN, generating 8% error observed between the EN and mapping results under 30 m/sec of wind velocity. On the other hand, effect of dead weight on the stress distribution was investigated via variation of high stress position with wind velocity, confirming shift of such position from the center to the forward head wind direction. The sensitivity of stress for wind velocity was less than 0.8% and negligible at wind velocity greater than 20 m/sec, thus eliminating self-weight effect.

  • The shell and tube heat exchangers installed in the propulsion system test complex (PSTC) at the Naro Space Center heats cryogenic helium to 500 K with a heat transfer oil. As the experimental helium outlet temperature was lower than expected (less than 100 K), the boundary layer effect of the heat transfer oil is predicted to be the cause of the performance deterioration. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis was performed to verify where the boundary layer effect exists; however, the boundary layer effect has no significant impact on the performance of the heat exchanger. An alternative method to improve the performance of the heat exchanger by changing the heat transfer oil has been discussed in this paper. The low viscosity and high thermal conductivity at high temperature (~500 K) of heat transfer oil at the shell-side are required to improve the thermal performance of the heat exchanger. The experimental performance of the heat exchanger, used to exchange heat between the cryogenic helium and hot heat transfer oil at the PSTC are summarized in this paper.

  • A new full scale testing apparatus generically named the Wall of Wind (WoW) has been built by the researchers at the International Hurricane Research Center (IHRC) at Florida International University (FIU). WoW is capable of testing single story building models subjected up to category 3 hurricane wind speeds. Depending on the relative model and WoW wind field sizes, testing may entail blockage issues. In addition, the proximity of the test building to the wind simulator may also affect the aerodynamic data. This study focuses on the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) assessment of the effects on the quality of the aerodynamic data of (i) blockage due to model buildings of various sizes and (ii) wind simulator proximity for various distances between the wind simulator and the test building. The test buildings were assumed to have simple parallelepiped shapes. The computer simulations were performed under both finite WoW wind-field conditions and in an extended Atmospheric Boundary Layer (ABL) wind flow. Mean pressure coefficients for the roof and the windward and leeward walls served as measures of the blockage and wind simulator proximity effects. The study uses the commercial software FLUENT with Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes equations and a Renormalization Group (RNG) k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model. The results indicated that for larger size test specimens (i.e. for cases where the height of test specimen is larger than one third of the wind field height) blockage correction may become necessary. The test specimen should also be placed at a distance greater than twice the height of the test specimen from the fans to reduce proximity effect.

  • This paper describes the development procedure of GUI Program for the automated generation of airfoil performance table used in helicopter comprehensive code. Considering commercialization, the program is developed based on the Windows operating system. In addition, it is aimed to enhance user's convenience by including embedded postprocessor which enables real-time display of calculation procedure and grid system. Using the validated CFD code, the aerodynamic analyses are automated for a given range of Mach number and angles of attack. The computational grid system is designed to generate automatically once the surface coordinates are given. Mixed-Language scheme is employed in order to combine the CFD code in Fortran with C++ based GUI program, which makes the time-consuming code conversion unnecessary.

  • A computational system to predict flowfield and infrared signature in aircraft exhaust system is developed. As the first step, a virtual mission profile is considered and an engine is selected through a performance analysis. Then a nozzle that meets the requirement of each mission is designed. The internal flow in the exhaustion nozzle at the maximum thrust is analyzed using a state-of-the-art CFD code. In addition, a system to combine information of the skin temperature distribution of the nozzle and after-body surface with an infrared prediction code is developed. Finally, qualitative results for the infrared signature reduction design are obtained by investigating the infrared signature level under various conditions.

  • In the present study, a three-dimensional CFD simulation on aerodynamic lift acting on windshield wiper blades was performed to improve the wiping performance of a vehicle moving at a high speed. To predict the reliable flow characteristics around the windshield wiper system, the computational domain included the full vehicle model with detailed geometry of wiper blades in the wind tunnel. From the numerical results, the drag and lift coefficients of wiper blade were obtained for the performance of windshield wiper. With this aerodynamic characteristics of windshield wiper, the effects of wiping angles and hood tip angle on the wiping performance of the windshield wiper were evaluated.

  • The present study develops a numerical model based on the computational fluid dynamics technique to analyse the thermal flow characteristics of large scale fire calorimeter and examine the characteristics of primary parameters affecting on the uncertainty of heat release rate measurement. ANSYS CFX version 12.1 which is a commercial CFD package is used to solve the governing equations of the thermal flow field and the eddy dissipation combustion model and P-1 radiation model are applied to simulate the fire driven flow. The numerical results shows that the horizontal duct system with $90^{\circ}$ bend duct was shown relatively high deviated asymmetric flow profiles at the sampling location and the deviation of the velocity field was higher than that of the temperature and species quantities. The present study shows that the computational model can be applicable to optimize the design process and operating condition of the large scale fire calorimeter based on the understanding of the detail flow field.

  • Nowadays, urban centers are increasingly vertical, making architects and engineers look for more efficient tools to analyze the effects of wind on tall buildings. Topology optimization can be used as an efficient tool for the design of bracing systems. Therefore, this work obtained the wind loads that act in the CAARC building, following the Brazilian standard NBR 6123/1988 and using Computational Fluid Dynamics. Four loading situations were considered, using the SIMP and BESO methods to optimize two-dimensional structures. A comparison between the SIMP and BESO methods is presented, showing the differences in the geometry of the solution found by both methods, the percentage variation in the objective function values and the dimensionless processing time. The solutions obtained through the loads obtained by the Brazilian standard are also compared with the numerical solutions obtained by CFD. The results show that the BESO method presented more rigid structures compared to the SIMP method. The bracing structures obtained with the SIMP method always present similar patterns in the distribution and quantity of bars, in contrast to the BESO method where no characteristic topology pattern was observed. It was concluded that even though the structures obtained by the BESO method presented greater stiffness, the SIMP method was less susceptible to the methodology used for the determination of wind loads. Additionally, it was evident the great potential that the combination topology optimization and computational wind engineering have in the design of bracing systems of high functional and aesthetic standards.
