  • We implemented a CD signal processor operated on a CAV 48-speed CD-ROM drive into a VLSI. The CD signal processor is a mixed mode monolithic IC including servo-processor, data recovery, data-processor, and I-bit DAC. For servo signal processing, we included a DSP core, while, for CAV mode playback, we adopted a PLL with a wide recovery range. Data processor (DP) was designed to meet the yellow book specification.[2]So, the DP block consists of EFM demodulator, C1/C2 ECC block, audio processor and a block transferring data to an ATAPI chip. A modified Euclid's algorithm was used as a key equation solver for the ECC block To achieve the high-speed decoding, the RS decoder is operated by a pipelined method. Audio playability is increased by playing a CD-DA disc at the speed of 12X or 16X. For this, subcode sync and data are processed in the same way as main data processing. The overall performance of IC is verified by measuring a transfer rate from the innermost area of disc to the outermost area. At 48-speed, the operating frequency is 210 ㎒, and this chip is fabricated by 0.35 um STD90 cell library of Samsung Electronics.

  • BLDC motors are stored in the devices such as CD-RW, COMBO, DVD-ROM and CD-ROM. It is indispensable to establish reliability assessment criteria for BLDC motors, especially in the world where IT grows rapidly. In this article, reliability certification procedure is given. The reliability certification procedure consists of two separate tests such as quality certification test and lifetime test. The former quality certification test comprises general performance test and environmental test. Items which pass the test undergo lifetime test which guarantees the extent of mean lifetime with certain confidence.

  • In this study, experimental tests for driving noise of various optical disk drives (ODD) have been performed using 1/2' microphone noise measurement system. Several new and old ODD models by different manufacturers are practically considered and compared far realistic driving conditions. Sound insulation case with absorbing material fur the present experimental tests is designed and constructed using CATIA system. It is found that average data transfer rate, operating RPM, and sound noise level seems to be different for the same opposed speed ODD by different manufacturers. Moreover, driving sound noise level can be largely affected by both tray shape and driving speed even for the same apparent data transfer rate.

  • The suspension of the optical pickup actuator is damped by the presence of silicone rubber damper bond at its termination. In spite of the presence of it, the actuator still exhibits a strong mechanical resonance which affects its settling time and vibrational characteristics. This resonance can cause errors in reading information from the disk, particularly in high speed CD-ROM and DVD-ROM drives. Ferrofluids are stable colloidal suspensions of sub-micron sized magnetic particles in a carrier liquid. In the actuator design, ferrofluid is applied to the surface of the magnets until the quantity is sufficient to maintain intimate contact with the bobbin/carrier assembly. The fluid is retained in the magnetic field and its viscosity provides the desired mechanical damping to the moving assembly, improving the actuators settling time and vibrational characteristics. Access time is also improved, particularly on warped or eccentric discs.

  • Particle contamination on the data storage disks has been a serious problem for magnetic hard disk drive manufacturers. For high storage optical disks, such as DVD-ROM/RAM or NFR (near field recording) system, particle-induced damages can be also detected because only a few micrometer particles can prevent read/write signal from optical lens. The increasing areal density and smaller bit size accelerates particle induced damages on the optical disk. One of the methods to prevent particle contamination on the optical disk surface is to handle the disk enclosed in a cartridge like a modern DVD-RAM disk. However, even for a perfectly sealed disk drive, particles are found inside the drive. The other method is to improve disk surface characteristics. Particle contamination on the surface can be reduced by proper selection of disk coating materials. [n this paper, particle detachment ratios for CD (compact disk), DVD (digital versatile disk), HD (magnetic hard disk), HD with Jut lubricant, and aluminosilicate substrate HD were investigated. Surface roughness and surface energy of the test disks were compared with the particle detachment ratios. Proper substrate and lubricant characteristics to reduce particle contamination on the disk surface were found.

  • Optical disk drive has excellent advantage of random accessibility of which performance is measured by access time. However, due to the increased rotational velocity of the disk and constraints of mechanical structure, two-stage seek algorithm which executes coarse and fine seeks sequentially has been adopted in most commercial optical disk drives. Although the laser spot is moved to a target track by a single seek operation, the limited operation range of the fine actuator restricts the application of the fine seek algorithm below a few hundreds of tracks. Especially, excessive movement of the objective lens causes a failure in generation of track-cross pulse and results in an unstable seek operation. In this paper, a new control algorithm for extending the fine seek range is proposed with an appropriate control structure. The coarse actuator is utilized to reduce the misalignment between the objective lens and the laser beam axis, and the fine actuator is controlled to follow the reference velocity trajectory. The proposed algorithm is applied to a CD-ROM drive to show its feasibility and some experimental results are presented.

  • Rubber dampers are widely used to damp out vibrations generated in many mechanical elements because of the excellent damping characteristics of rubber. The damping characteristics of rubber is much dependent on temperature and frequency, which, in some cases, limit the effectiveness of rubber dampers. In this study, in order to increase the damping properties and axial and cross stiffnesses of rubber vibration dampers which are used in recording and regenerating devices, solid cores were inserted with interference tolerance in the rubber dampers. The damping characteristics of the rubber dampers with cores were investigated by experimentally and numerically using finite element method with respect to the interference tolerance, the core roughness, the materials of the core and the environmental temperature. From the experimental and theoretical investigations, it was found that the core in the rubber increased both the damping and stiffness of the damper. Also, it was found that the damping and stiffness of the rubber damper were much dependent on the temperature and frequency. Using the results of the experimental and theoretical investigations, the optimum design method for the cored rubber damper for recording and regenerating devices was developed.

  • There are a lot of roots of errors in a motion of the optical pick-up actuator being one of the most significantcomponents in a CD-ROM drive. Most of the studios recently performed have a tendency to seek for the causes from an actuator itself. This paper presents dynamic characteristics of an actuator affected by the motion of a feeding deck. The feeding system is modeled as a rigid body with eight degree-of-freedom. Using Largrange's equation, we derive linear equations of motion with respect to the rectangular coordinate. We found that the ranges of the natural frequencies of a feeding deck and the actuator are close to each other. The time responses are also computed by the Newmark method and Runge-Kutta method. The result show that it is important effect to consider feeding deck in modeling and designing an optical pick-up.
