  • Antibacterial glass ceramics composed of $5Li_2O{\cdot}36CaO{\cdot}20TiO_2{\cdot}27P_2O_5$ were Prepared. After ion exchange in the $AgNO_3$solution, crystallization phases were $AgTi_2(PO_4)_3$, $LiTi_2(PO_4)_3$ and $Ca_3(PO_4)_2$. In case of ion exchange, the crystallization phases started to be transformed from $LiTi_2(PO_4)_3$ to $AgTi_2(PO_4)_3$in 0.5 mole $AgNO_3$ solution and the transformation was almost completed in 1.0 mole. ion exchange rate of glass-ceramics powder, considering ion exchange time, was more fast than that of bulk. The bacteriostatic effect of the glass-ceramics on Staphyloroccus aureus and Salmonella typhi bacteria was more excellent than that of glass when the crystallization phase was transformed from LTP to AgTP.

  • The primary goal of six sigma is to improve patient satisfaction, and thereby profitability, by reducing and eliminating defects. Defects may be related to any aspect of customer satisfaction: high product quality, schedule adherence, cost minimization, process capability indices, defects per unit, and yield. Many six sigma metrics can be mathematically related to the others. Literally, six means six standard deviations from the mean or median value. As applied to quality metrics, the term indicates that failures are at least six standard deviations from the mean or norm. This would mean about 3.4 failures per million opportunities for failure. The objective of six sigma quality is to reduce process output variation so that on a long term basis, which is the customer's aggregate experience with our process over time, this will result in no more than 3.4 defect Parts Per Million(PPM) opportunities (or 3.4 Defects Per Million Opportunities. For a process with only one specification limit (upper or lower), this results in six process standard deviations between the mean of the process and the customer's specification limit (hence, 6 Sigma). The results of applicative six sigma experiment studied on 18 items TP, ALB, T.B, ALP, AST, ALT, CL, CK, LD, K, Na, CRE, BUN, T.C, GLU, AML, CA tests in clinical chemistry were follows. Assessment of process performance fits within six sigma tolerance limits were TP, ALB, T.B, ALP, AST, ALT, CL, CK, LD, K, Na, CRE, BUN, T.C, GLU, AML, CA with 72.2%, items that fit within five sigma limits were total bilirubin, chloride and sodium were 3 sigma. We were sure that the goal of six sigma would reduce test variation in the process.

  • This study evaluated the effectiveness of biostimulating agent in contaminated coastal sediment. The study was conducted via column tests in coastal sea wherein two separate columns were employed for two different polymers used and another column for a blank. The biostimulating agent was made by mixing sea sediment with biostimulants viz acetate, nitrate, sulfate. The biostimulating agent was then rolled into balls, dried and coated with either Cellulose Acetate (CA) or Polysulfone (PS) to control the release of the biostimulants. The pH was around 7.6~8 for 4 months while COD, TP and TN were significantly lower in the column containing biostimulating agents. Heavy metal(Fe, Zn, Cd, Cr, Pb, Cu) was converted to stable forms and PS coated biostimulating agent had a high efficiency of heavy metals distribution.

  • Globally, 1.3 million people develop colon cancer every year, and 600,000 people die each year it. In Korea, colorectal carcinoma was associated with the highest death rate, accounting for 8,380 people, among solid cancers in 2015. Among the various methods for the diagnosis and study of colorectal carcinoma, the results obtained by cytogenetic and molecular genetic methods were compared. Detection rate was 47% in 18q, 40% in 17p, 27% in 22q, and 17% in 10q via CGH; detection rate was 57% in D18S59, 50% in D18S68, 50% in TP53CA, 47% in D18S6940% in D22S274, 37% in D22S283, 27% in D10S187, and 23% in D10S541 with LOH. Microsatellite marker matching rates were 100% in D22S274, 100% in D22S283, 100% in D10S186, 100% in D10S187, 100% in D10S541, 93% in D18S69, 93% in D18S68, 92% in TP53CA, and 89% in D18S59. The agreement rate between the two methods was 94.4% based on positive results using CGH. Based on the advantages of CGH, which was the ability to obtain information regarding the entire tumor genome at once, this experiment could identify the region with significant deletion using CGH and the more limited region LOH, with a completely different approach. LOH in the recurrent high-risk group, 18q21, was helpful in the selection of treatment modalities and in prognostic estimation as well as making the most appropriate decision for treatment. Therefore, it is suggested that LOH with surgical site tissues could be one of the treatment methods for recurrent high-risk group among patients with colorectal carcinoma.

  • Low impact development (LID) facilities are established for the purpose of restoring the natural hydrologic cycle as well as the removal of pollutants from stormwater runoff. Improved efficiency of LID facilities can be obtained through the optimized interaction of their major components (i.e., plant, soil, filter media, microorganisms, etc.). Therefore, this study was performed to evaluate the performances of LID facilities in terms of runoff and pollutant reduction and also to provide an optimal maintenance method. The monitoring was conducted on four LID technologies (e.g., bioretention, small wetlands, rain garden and tree box filter). The optimal SA/CA (facility surface area / catchment area) ratio for runoff reduction greater than 40% is determined to be 1 - 5%. Since runoff reduction affects the pollutant removal efficiency in LID facilities, SA/CA ratio is derived as an important factor in designing LID facilities. The LID facilities that are found to be effective in reducing stormwater runoff are in the following order: rain garden > tree box filter > bioretention> small wetland. Meanwhile, in terms of removal of particulate matter (TSS), the effectiveness of the facilities are in the following order: rain garden > tree box filter > small wetland > bioretention; rain gardens > tree box filter > bioretention > small wetland were determined for the removal of organic matter (COD, TOC), nutrients (TN, TP) and heavy metals (Cu, Pb, Cd, Zn). These results can be used as an important material for the design of LID facilities in runoff volume and pollutant reduction.

  • To evaluate the functions of vegetation mat of artificial floating island (AFI) installed in Lake Paldang, nutrients, such as total phosphorus (TP), dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP), total nitrogen (TN) and nitrate $(NO_3)$ and microbial factors such as total bacterial numbers, active bacterial numbers and exoenzymatic activities of $\beta$-glucosidase and phosphatase in pore water of medium and bulk lake water were analyzed. The concentration of TN and $NO_3$ in pore water ranged from 4.4 to 7.5mg $L^{-1}$ from 1.2 to 3.8mg $L^{-1}$ respectively, which were ca. 2 times higher than those of lake water. The ranges of TP and DIP of were $1.4\sim4.1mg\;L^{-1}$ and $0.003\sim0.137mg\;L^{-1}$ in pore water of media which were $4\sim25$ and 5 times higher than those of lake water, respectively. The numbers of total bacteria and active bacteria in pore waterwere about 10 times higher than those of laker water. Also, both phosphatase and $\beta$-glucosidase activities of pore water were on an average 10 times higher than those of lake water. These results suggest that the bacteria were playing important role for nutrients concentrating and cycling in media of artificial floating island. And the medium of artificial floating island contained newly created microbial ecosystem, which is responsible for sustaining the growth of macrophytes and the creation of new aquatic ecosystem.

  • Furosemide is a potent diuretic used in the horse for the prophylaxis of exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage(EIPH), and in a variety of clinical condition. The purpose of this study was to set up the effect of furosemide in Thoroughbred horses, and to examine the time of maximal effect of furosemide to prevent the EIPH. The animals of the experiment were 4 Thoroughbred racing horses(female, average 6 yrs, BW $507{\pm}80.2kg$) in Jeju stud farm and the experiment was cross-over design between furosemide(1 mg/kg IV) and normal saline(0.1 ml/kg, IV) administration. We investigated the changes of clinical signs(body weight, skin turgor, capillary refilling time, jugular distensibility), CBC(PCV RBC), serum chemistry(TP, AST, GGT, glucose, LDH, BUN and creatinine) and electrolytes ($Na^+,\;K^+,\;Cl^-,\;Ca^{2+}$) on 0, 30 mins, 1, 2, 4, 8 and 24 hrs in furosemide and saline administration roup, respectively. The weight decreased significantly(P<0.05) in 4 hrs after furosemide treatment, but skin turgor, CRT, jugular distensibility remained unchanged throughout the experimental period. RBC and PCV decreased after furosemide administration but soon recovered. TP increased to the highest level in 30 mins after furosemide administration and recovered in 8 hrs. Furosemide administration resulted in increases in glucose, AST, GGT, LDH, BUN, creatinine(P<0.05) and decreases in $Ca^{2+},\;Na^+,\;K^+,\;Cl^-$ (P<0.05). All of values were within normal range throughout the experimental period. There was the alteration of blood and serum chemistry after furosemide administration, all of values were within normal range. And the best time of furosemide administration will be 30 minutes before the racing in order to preventing EIPH.

  • Anaerobic Filters (AF) packed with porous ceramic floating media were operated at different operational conditions to identify the feasibility of the renewable bioenergy, methane production from swine wastewater and to verify the suitability of effluent from anaerobic filters for the subsequent biological nitrogen and phosphorus removal. Stepwise increase in organic loading rates (OLRs) or decrease in hydraulic retention times (HRTs) with influent TCOD concentration of 14,000 mg/L were utilized at mesophilic temperature. The maximum methane productivity of 1.74 volume of $CH_4$ per volume of reactor per day (v/v-d) was achieved at an hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 0.5 day (OLR 28 g TVS/L-d). Based on the biogas production, the highest total volatile solids (TVS) removal efficiency of 63% was obtained at an HRT of 3 days (OLR 4.67 g TVS/L-d), however based on the result from the effluent total chemical oxygen demand (TCOD) analysis, the highest TCOD removal efficiency of 75% was achieved. The effluent alkalinity concentration over the range of 2,050~2,980 mg/L as $CaCO_3$ at all operational conditions, could compensate the alkalinity destruction caused by nitrification. The effluent from the anaerobic filter operated under the HRT of 2 days showed the COD/TKN ratio of 15~35 and COD/TP ratio of 38~56. Therefore effluent C/N/P ratio is able to satisfy the optimum COD/TKN ratio of greater than 8.0 and COD/TP ratio of 33 for the subsequent biological nutrient removal.

  • This study was conducted to examine the effects of alterations in water temperature (WT) on biochemical and immunological factors in the hemolymph of the abalones, Haliotis gigantea and H. discus discus. The abalone were exposed to various WT; 18, 20, 22, 24, 26 and $28^{\circ}C$ for 96 hours. In biochemical factors, total-protein (TP), glucose, magnesium (Mg), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) were not significant changes in hemolymph of H. gigantea and H. discus discus. But calcium was significantly increased by high WT (${\geq}24^{\circ}C$). In immunological factor, The phenoloxidase (PO) activity was decreased in hemolymph of H. gigantea and H. discus discus exposed to high temperature (${\geq}22^{\circ}C$) compared to the control (P < 0.05). Whereas alkaline phosphatase (ALP) was not significantly changed. These results suggested that high temperature adversely affects the immunity of H. gigantea and H. discus discus.

  • In this study, we surveyed the fish community at the four sites(St. 1, 3, 5, 7) in Jungrang Stream from 2008 to 2016. We found 37 species grouped into nine families. There were three exotic species; Cyprinus carpio, Carassius cuvieri and Micropterus salmoides after rainfall. Dominant species was Zacco platypus (57.3%) and subdominant species was Carassius auratus(10.4%) in a community. The water quality, surveyed at the six sites(St. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6), based on eight factors(Water temperature, pH, DO, BOD, SS, EC, TN and TP), largely varied depending on each site and period. Minimum values in four factors(BOD, EC, TN and TP) were observed in rainy season, indicating an ionic and nutrient dilution of stream water by precipitation. In contrast, a maximum value in SS was occurred in rainy season at St. 2 and St. 5. The precipitation, Maximum value observed in July ($497.5{\pm}297.2mm$), minimum value in January ($12.9{\pm}8.6mm$). In July and August, the precipitation was divided into before and after the rainfall season in Jungrang stream. Using cluster analysis three fish sites (St. 1, 3, 5) were identified as significantly influence 11 fish species; Hemiculter eigenmanni, Squalidus japonicus coreanus, Hemibarbus labeo, Gnathopogon strigatus, Pungtungia herzi, Rhynchocypris oxycephalus, Pseudogobio esocinus, Pseudorasbora parva, Cyprinus carpio, Carassius auratus and Zacco platypus by rainfall.
