Objective : Bilateral C1-2 transarticular screw fixation (TAF) with interspinous wiring has been the best treatment for atlantoaxial instability (AAI). However, several factors may disturb satisfactory placement of bilateral screws. This study evaluates the usefulness of unilateral TAF when bilateral TAF is not available. Methods : Between January 2003 and December 2007, TAF was performed in 54 patients with AAI. Preoperative studies including cervical x-ray, three dimensional computed tomogram, CT angiogram, and magnetic resonance image were checked. The atlanto-dental interval (ADI) was measured in preoperative period, immediate postoperatively, and postoperative 1, 3 and 6 months. Results : Unilateral TAF was performed in 27 patients (50%). The causes of unilateral TAF were anomalous course of vertebral artery in 20 patients (74%), severe degenerative arthritis in 3 (11%), fracture of C1 in 2, hemangioblastoma in one, and screw malposition in one. The mean ADI in unilateral group was measured as 2.63 mm in immediate postoperatively, 2.61 mm in 1 month, 2.64 mm in 3 months and 2.61 mm in 6 months postoperatively. The mean ADI of bilateral group was also measured as following; 2.76 mm in immediate postoperative, 2.71 mm in 1 month, 2.73 mm in 3 months, 2.73 mm in 6 months postoperatively. Comparison of ADI measurement showed no significant difference in both groups, and moreover fusion rate was 100% in bilateral and 96.3% in unilateral group (p=0.317). Conclusion : Even though bilateral TAF is best option for AAI in biomechanical perspectives, unilateral screw fixation also can be a useful alternative in otherwise dangerous or infeasible cases through bilateral screw placement.

New way to effectively capture $CO_2$ in coal fired power plant is the combustion of coal using oxy-fuel technology. Combustion characteristics of Minco sub-bituminous coal at oxy-fuel conditions using TGA and drop tube furnace (DTF) were included activation energy about the char burnout, volatile yield and combustion efficiency of raw coal, the porosity of pyrolyzed char and fusion temperature of by-product ash. TGA result shows that the effect of $CO_2$ on combustion kinetics reduces activation energy by approximately 7 kJ/mol at air oxygen level(21% $O_2$) and decreases the burning time by approximately 16%. The results from DTF indicated similar combustion efficiency under $O_2/CO_2$ and $O_2/N_2$ atmospheres for equivalent $O_2$ concentration whereas high combustion efficiency under $O_2/N_2$ than $O_2/CO_2$ was obtained for high temperature of more than $1,100^{\circ}C$. Overall coal burning rate under $O_2/CO_2$ is decreased due to the lower rate of oxygen diffusion into coal surface through the $CO_2$ rich boundary layer. By-product ash produced under $O_2/CO_2$ and $O_2/N_2$ was similar IDT in irrelevant to $O_2$ concentration and atmospheres gas during the coal combustion.
$Ni_{0.9}Zn_{0.1}Fe_2O_4$ nanoparticles have been prepared by a sol-gel method. The structural and magnetic properties have been investigated by DTA/TGA, XRD, SEM, and $M\ddot{o}ssbauer$ spectroscopy, VSM. $Ni_{0.9}Zn_{0.1}Fe_2O_4$ powder that was annealed at $300^{\circ}C$ has spinel structure and behaved superparamagnetically. The estimated size of superparammagnetic Ni-Zn ferrite nanoparticle is around 10 nm. The hyperfine fields at 13 K for the A and B patterns were found to be 533 and 507 kOe, respectively. The blocking temperature ($T_B$) of superparammagnetic $Ni_{0.9}Zn_{0.1}Fe_2O_4$ nanoparticle is about 250 K. The magnetic anisotropy constant and relaxation time constant of $Ni_{0.9}Zn_{0.1}Fe_2O_4$ nanoparticle were calculated to be $1.6\times10^6\;ergs/cm^3$ and ${\tau}_0=5.0{\times}10^{-13}$ s, respectively. Also, Temperature increased up to $43^{\circ}C$ within 10 minutes under AC magnetic field of 7 MHz. It is considered that $Ni_{0.9}Zn_{0.1}Fe_2O_4$ powder that was annealed at $300^{\circ}C$ is available for biomedicine application such as hyperthermia, drug delivery system and contrast agents in MRI.

This study was conducted to explore the potential for use of atmospheric pressure dielectric barrier discharge plasma (atmospheric pressure DBD plasma) as a non-thermal sterilization technology for microorganisms in dried red pepper. The effects of key parameters such as power, exposure time and distance on the sterilization efficiency and the quality of red dried pepper by the atmospheric pressure DBD plasma treatment were investigated. The results revealed that the plasma treatment was very effective for sterilization of Staphylococcus aureus, with 15 min of treatment at 1.0 kW and 20 mm sterilizing 82.6% of the S. aureus. Increasing the power or exposure time and decreasing the exposure distance led to improved sterilization efficiency. The atmospheric pressure DBD plasma treatment showed no effect on the ASTA (American spice trade association) value or hardness of dried red pepper. Furthermore, no effects of atmospheric pressure DBD plasma treatment were observed on the sensory properties of dried red pepper. To assess the storage stability, the dried red pepper was treated with atmospheric pressure DBD plasma (1.5 kW power, 15 min exposure time and 10 mm exposure distance), then stored for 12 weeks at $25^{\circ}C$. Consequently, the ASTA value, hardness and capsaicin concentration of dried red pepper were maintained.
The present study was conducted to examine some factors affecting in vitro development and fecundity of embryos recloned with somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT). Fibroblast cells retrieved from the ear of a 3-week-old, cloned Korean goat (Jinsoonny) were used as karyoplast donors and serum-starvation was conducted in tissue culture medium (TCM)-199 supplemented with 0.5% FBS. Recipient oocytes were surgically collected by flushing the oviducts 35 h after hCG injection following FSH priming. The zonae pellucidae of the oocytes were partially perforated with a laser drill and a donor cell was transferred into an enucleated oocyte. The couplets were electrically fused and activated by ionomycin (5 min) and 6-DMAP (4 h). The reconstructed embryos were cultured in mSOF medium containing 0.8% BSA at $39^{\circ}C$ in an atmosphere of 5% $CO_2$, 5% $%O_2$, 90% $N_2$ for 12 to 15 h. Re-cloned embryos (2- to 4-cell stages) were surgically transferred into the oviducts of the recipients and pregnancy was subsequently diagnosed by progesterone assay and ultrasound on Days 21 and 63 of pregnancy. The fusion rate following 1st fusion pulse was higher (p<0.05) in 2nd cloning (65.9%) compared to 1st cloning (51.0%), but it was not different in the other groups. The rate of cleavage after fusion was significantly higher (p<0.05) in 1st (77.7%) than in 2nd cloning (56.0%). A total of 175 re-cloned embryos were transferred into 28 recipients. On day 21 and 60 after transfer, 11 (39.3%) and 4 recipients (17.4%) were pregnancy, respectively. In comparison of pregnancy rate by estrous synchronization, a total of 66 and 109 re-cloned embryos were transferred into 11 recipients in natural estrus and 17 recipients in induced estrus, respectively. Five (45.4%) and 2 recipients (18.2%) in natural estrus were pregnant on days 21 and 63 while 6 (35.3%) and 2 (11.8%) recipients in induced estrus were pregnant, respectively. These results show that recloning of goat can be achieved by SCNT and estrous synchronization between donor and recipient animals may be one of the major factors affecting success rate.

We have investigated the electrical properties of Ru/Ni/n-GaN Schottky structure using current-voltage (I-V) and capacitance-voltage (C-V) measurements at room temperature. The barrier height (${\Phi}_{bo}$) and ideality factor (n) of Ru/Ni/n-GaN Schottky structure are found to be 0.66 eV and 1.44, respectively. The ${\Phi}_{bo}$ and the series resistance ($R_S$) obtained from Cheung's method are compared with modified Norde's method, and it is seen that there is a good agreement with each other. The energy distribution of interface state density ($N_{SS}$) is determined from the I-V measurements by taking into account the bias dependence of the effective barrier height. Further, the interface state density $N_{SS}$ as determined by Terman's method is found to be $2.14{\times}10^{12}\;cm^{-2}\;eV^{-1}$ for the Ru/Ni/n-GaN diode. Results show that the interface state density and series resistance has a significant effect on the electrical characteristics of studied diode.
Aspergil-lus coreanus NR-15 and Aspergilus oryzae NR-2-5 from traditional Korean Nuruk were selected as parental strains producing starch hydrolysis enzyme. Xll(Arginine-) mutant from A. coreanus NR 15-1 showed high glu-doamylase activity and total acid productivity. Z6(Adenine-) mutant from A. oryzae NR2-5 showed the highest $\alpha$-amylase activity. Therefore, both XII and Z6 mutants were selected and investigated for the optimal conditions of protoplast formation for protoplast fusion. Mixture of equal amount of cellulase and driselase(10mg/ml each) was the most effective as lytic enzymes. The optimal pH and temperature for protoplast formation were 5.0 and $30^{\circ}C$, respectively. The most effective reaction for protoplast formation time was 4 hours. The maximum of protoplst for- mation of Xll mutant and Z6 mutant were $6.54$\times$10^{7}$ protoplasts/ ml and $3.04$\times$10^{ 7}$ protoplasts/ml, and the regen-eration frequencies of the protoplasts were 11.3% and 11.6%, respectively. The size of the protoplasts from X11 and Z6 mutants were 3~6 $\mu\textrm{m}$ and 4~9$\mu\textrm{m}$, respectively.

Highly conductive polyaniline(PAn)-nylon 6 composite fabric was prepared by immersing the nylon 6 fabric in 0.5M aniline+0.35M HCl aqueous solution at 4$0^{\circ}C$ for 2hours, Polymerization was then followed by mixing the prepared oxidant and dopant solution(0.5M(NH4)2S2O+0.35M HCl) to the diffusion bath at 5$^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes. The conductivity of prepared PAn-nylon 6 composite fabrics reached as high as 0.5$\times$10-1S/cm. Their conductivity were significantly affected by the aniline and oxidant concentration. As compared to those of nylon 6 fabric heat of fusion melting point the degree of crystallinity and tensile strength of PAn-nylon 6 did not significantly changed by inclusion of PAn. In the aspect of serviceability wheras the fabric conductivity was significantly decreased after multiple washion no significant changes in the fabric conductivity were observed after abrading the composite fabric over 50 cycles. However we found that the fabric conductivity could be recovered by acid re-doping with HCl.
The wear of engine valve and seat insert is one of the most important factors which affect engine performance. Because of higher demands on performance and the increasing use of alternative fuel, engine valve and seat insert are challenged with greater wear problems than in the past. In order to solve the above problems, a simulator was developed to be able to generate and control high temperatures and various speeds during motion. The wear simulator is considered to be a valid simulation of the engine valve and seat insert wear process with various speeds during engine activity. This work focuses on the different degrees of wear at three different singular test speeds (10 Hz, 25 Hz & multi-Hz). For this study, the temperature of the outer surface of the seat insert was controlled at 350$^{\circ}C$, and the test load was 1960 N. The test cycle number was $6.0{\times}10^6$. The mean ($\pm$standard error) wear depth of the valve at 10 Hz and 25 Hz was 45.1 ($\pm$3.7)$\mu$m and 81.7 ($\pm$2.5)$\mu$m, respectively. The mean wear depth of the seat insert at 10 Hz and 25 Hz was 52.7 ($\pm$3.9)$\mu$m and 91.2 ($\pm$2.7)$\mu$m, respectively. In the case of multi-Hz it was 70.7 ($\pm$2.4)$\mu$m and 77.4 ($\pm$3.8)$\mu$m, respectively. It was found that higher speed (25 Hz) cause a greater degree of wear than lower speed (10 Hz) under identical test condition (temperature, valve displacement, cycle number and test load). In the wear mechanisms of valves, adhesive wear, shear strain and abrasive wear could be observed. Also, in the wear mechanisms of seat inserts, adhesive wear, surface fatigue wear and abrasive wear could be observed.
Protein arginine methyltransferase (PRMT) is an important epigenetic regulator in eukaryotic cells. During encystation, an essential process for Acanthamoeba survival, the expression of a lot of genes involved in the encystation process has to be regulated in order to be induced or inhibited. However, the regulation mechanism of these genes is yet unknown. In this study, the full-length 1,059 bp cDNA sequence of Acanthamoeba castellanii PRMT1 (AcPRMT1) was cloned for the first time. The AcPRMT1 protein comprised of 352 amino acids with a SAM-dependent methyltransferase PRMT-type domain. The expression level of AcPRMT1 was highly increased during encystation of A. castellanii. The EGFP-AcPRMT1 fusion protein was distributed over the cytoplasm, but it was mainly localized in the nucleus of Acanthamoeba. Knock down of AcPRMT1 by synthetic siRNA with a complementary sequence failed to form mature cysts. These findings suggested that AcPRMT1 plays a critical role in the regulation of encystation of A. castellanii. The target gene of AcPRMT1 regulation and the detailed mechanisms need to be investigated by further studies.
