This study compared the nutritional composition and antioxidative activities of different parts (aerial part and root) of Taraxacum coreanum and Taraxacum officinale. To identify the nutrient composition of different parts of Daedelion species, nutrient contents were analyzed. Crude ash, protein, and fat contents of T. coreanum and T. officinale were higher in the aerial part compared to the root. There was no significant difference in crude ash, protein, or carbohydrate content of the aerial part depending on the Daedelion species. Aerial part contents of vitamin A, E, and C were significantly higher in T. coreanum than T. officinale. The K content of the aerial part of T. coreanum and T. officinale was highest, although there was no significant difference among Daedelion species. Contents of oxalic acid, citric acid, and acetic acid in the aerial part of T. coreanum were highest. Contents of total polyphenols, total flavonoids, and DPPH radical scavenging activity of the aerial part were significantly higher in T. coreanum than T. officinale. In conclusion, the aerial part of T. coreanum and T. officinale could be used as antioxidative functional food sources.
Extract of drugs in commerce was administered to mice for 3 days and 7 days and its antifatigue effects were compared with those of P. ginseng extract and A. sessiliflorum extract. Mice were used for these experiments divided into ethyl alcohol and water extract of R. glutinosa(saengjihwang), R. glutinosa (sookjihwang), A. japonica(changchool), A. japonica(baekchool), P. officinale, C. japonica, C. morifolium, A. calamus were given ordinary dose rally. For antifatigue test, swimming performance were determined after the extract administration. The group of P. officinale gave high improvement of the swimming performance in ethyl alcohol extract group.
Zingiber officinale and Hizikia fusiforme(sea weed fusiforme) have long been used for food sources in Korea. The present study was performed to investigate the ex vivo effect of Zingiber officinale and Hizikia fusiforme on NO production in macrophage of mice. Seven to eight week old mices(Balb/c) were fed chew diet ad libitum and water extract of Zingiber officinale and Hizikia fusiforme was administrated orally at two different concentrations (50 and 500 mg/kg B.W.). every other day for two or four weeks NO(nitric oxide) production by activated macrophage was assessed by measuring nitrite, the stable NO metabolite, using Griess reaction assay. NO production were significantly enhanced in Zingiber officinale group at 500 mg/kg B.W. and in Hizikia fusiforme group at 50 mg/kg B.W. compared to the coresponding control groups. In conclusion, this study may suggest that Zingiber officinale and Hizikia fusiforme(sea weed fusiforme) extracts enhance the immune function by regulating NO production in macrophages of mice.
$\alpha$-MSH plays an important role in UV induced melanogenesis in human skin. It is believed to exert its effects by binding to $\alpha$-MSH receptor that in turn activates adenylate cyclase and increase melanocyte proliferation, dendricity and melanogenesis. In this study, we evaluated plant extracts showing the inhibitory activity on $\alpha$-MSH induced melanogenesis. The Cnidium officinale extracts showed high inhibitory activity on $\alpha$-MSH induced melanogenesis. It ($50{\mu}\textrm{g}$/ml) inhibited the melanin synthesis activated by $\alpha$-MSH in B-16 melanoma cells. Also, we isolated active compound from C. officinale extracts by Mass spectrophotometer, HPLC. It was identified as Senkyunolide A. It showed the same inhibitory activity as C. officinale extracts at the lower concentration. Finally, Senkyunolide A from Cnidium officinale extracts could playas $\alpha$-MSH antagonist and be used as a strong ingredient for skin whitening cosmetics.
Cnidium officinale, a traditional herb, has diverse beneficial pharmacological activities, such as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anticancer, and antiangiogenesis effects. However, the cellular and molecular mechanisms of apoptosis by C. officinale are poorly defined. The present study investigated the proapoptotic effects of water, ethanol, and methanol extract of C. officinale (WECO, EECO, and MECO, respectively) in human leukemia U937 cells. The antiproliferative activity of EECO was higher than that of WECO and MECO. The antiproliferative effect of EECO treatment in U937 cells was associated with the induction of apoptotic cell death, including increased populations of annexin-V positive cells, the formation of apoptotic bodies, DNA fragmentation, and increased numbers of cells with a loss of mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP, Δψm). EECO-induced apoptotic cell death was associated with upregulation of death receptor 4 (DR4) and down-regulation of cellular inhibitor of apoptosis protein-1 (cIAP-1), Bcl-2, and total Bid. The EECO treatment also induced the proteolytic activation of caspases (-3, -8, and -9), and degradation of caspase-3 substrate proteins, such as poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP), β-catenin, and phospholipase C-γ1 (PLCγ1). In addition, the EECO treatment effectively activated the adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) signaling pathway. However, compound C, a specific inhibitor of AMPK, significantly reduced EECO-induced apoptosis. These results indicate that AMPK is a key regulator of apoptosis in response to EECO in human leukemia U937 cells.

Ethanol extracts of 38 vegetables were subjected to an in vitro screening for their growth-inhibitory activities towards Bifidobacterium bifidum, B. longum, Clostridium perfringens, Lactobacillus acidophilus, L. casei, and Escherichia coli using paper disc agar diffusion methods under anaerobic conditions. The responses varied with both bacterial strain and vegetable species. In a test with 20 mg/disc, Zingiber officinale extracts showed significant growth-inhibitory responses against B. bifidum, and strong inhibitions against L. casei were detected in the extracts of Chrysanthemum coronarium var. spatiosum and Lactuca sativa. The extracts of Allium sativum, Capsicum annuum, L. esculentum, L. esculentum var. cerasiforme, and Z. officinale showed strong inhibitory activities against C. perfringens, while moderate growth-inhibitory responses were observed in the extracts of C. ffutescens, Cucurbita moschata, Daucus carota var. sativa, and Rubus coreanus. However, all vegetable extracts showed no inhibitions against B. longum, L. acidophilus, and E. coli. In tests with 5 mg/disc, moderate inhibitions were observed in the extracts of C. coronarium var. spatiosum and L. sativa against L. casei and Z. officinale against B. bifidum. Vegetables extracts, except for C. coronarium var. spatiosum, L. sativa, and Z. officinale, did not affect the growth of beneficial bacteria. Strong inhibitory responses against C. perfringens were detected in the extracts of C. annuum and L. esculentum var. cerasiforme. Daily intake of vegetables may be important in the prevention of human diseases caused by the intestinal bacteria.
Cnidium officinale is a perennial herb belonging to the family Umbelliferae. Its origin is China and is also distributed in Korea and Japan. In 2017, a phenomenon of browning and wilting of leaves was discovered in the cultivation field of the National Institute of Forest Science, Suwon, Korea. The pathogens isolated from plants were consistent with Fusarium solani as a result of morphological examination and molecular phylogenetic analysis. This is the first record of F. solani on C. officinale in Korea.
The epidermal structure and development of stomata in four taxa of Zingiberaceae viz: Aframomum melegueta K. Schum, Aframomum sceptrum K. Schum, Curcuma longa L. and Zingiber officinale Rosc. have been investigated. Unicellular, eglandular trichomes are observed on the epidermis of A. sceptrum and Z. officienal. Anomocytic stomata with agenous ontogeny, paracitic stomata with eumesogenous ontogeny and tetracytic stomata with mesoperigenous ontogency are recorded in Z. officinale, Aframomum species and C. longa respectively. Stomata of Z. officinale are the smallest in size (20.6$\times$14.3$\times$10.5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) while those of C. longa are the largest (42.5$\times$31.5$\times$20.2${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$). These two taxa also recorded the highest (43.7/mm2) and lowest (28.6/mm2) stomatal frequency respectively which suggests a linear regression of frequency on size.
Plant parasitic nematodes, Meloidogyne and Pratylenchus spp., are mostly detected in imported bulbs and tubers including a ginger, Zingiber officinale in Korea by quarantine inspection. However, there is little information on hot water immersion treatment (HWIT) for control of exotic nematodes, which induce economic loss by discard or send back to exporter, in imported gingers. In here, we determined that mortality of two plant parasitic nematodes and thermal stability of ginger. Meloidogyne and Pratylenchus spp. were completely killed at $48^{\circ}C$ and $49^{\circ}C$ for 30 sec by HWIT. Thermal conduction of Z. officinale to reach a target temperature as $50^{\circ}C$ take 10~32 min and 6~16 min for core and inner 5 mm region from surface, respectively. When ginger exposed at $51^{\circ}C$ for 30 min, growth of Z. officinale was not affected by heat treatment compared with control. Based on these results, HWIT at $51^{\circ}C$ for 30 min completely killed artificially infected juveniles of Meloidogyne spp. in Z. officinale. Therefore, this condition for HWIT will be used as fundamental information on phytosanitory to kill two plant parasitic nematodes without damage on ginger.
This study was conducted to improve the productivety of Ligusticum chuanxiong HORT. and Cnidium officinale MAKINO by establishing the effects of cultivating conditions. Growth characteristics of underground part of L. chuanxiong under the different mulching treatment showed the highest growth and yield in black vinyl mulching treatment. The highest dry weight of underground parts per plant in mulching treatment was 47.9g at white shading treatment while the lowest one was 16.5g at black shading treatment. Growth characteristics of underground parts C. officinale under the different mulching treatment were the higher in black vinyl mulching rather than in rice straw mulching and white vinyl mulching. Dry weight of underground parts per plant of C. officinale under the different shading treatments was the highest(37.8g) under the white shading while it was lowest(12. 2g) under the black shading.
