  • Objectives The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of Sesamum indicum extracted (SEI) on atopic dermatitis in an in-vitro and in-vivo experiment using a MC/9 murine mast cells and a NC/Nga mouse. Methods In-vitro experiment, IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, IL-13, TNF-${\alpha}$ and GM-CSF mRNA expression were evaluated by Real-time PCR, IL-13, MIP-$1{\alpha}$ production by ELISA and manifestations of NFAT-1, NFAT-2, c-jun, c-fos, NF-${\kappa}B$ p65 transcription factors by western blotting. In-vivo experiment, we measured WBC, Eosinophil, Neutrophil, and serum IL-5, IL-13 in NC/Nga atopic dermatitis mouse, IL-5, IL-13, IFN-${\gamma}$, IL-4 in the spleenocyte culture supernatant by ELISA, the absolute cell numbers of CD4+, CD8+, +Gr-1+CD11b, B220+CD23+ in the axillary lymph node (ALN), peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and dorsal skin tissue, IL-5, IL-13 by Real-time PCR, the distribution of tissue inflammation and cellular infiltration by H&E and toluidine blue. Results SEI decreased IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, IL-13, GM-CSF, TNF-${\alpha}$ mRNA expression, IL-13, MIP-$1{\alpha}$ production and the expression of transcription factors including NFAT-1, c-jun, NF-${\kappa}B$ p65 in MC/9 murine mast cells. SEI orally administration decreased cell number of WBC, Eosinophil, the level of serum IgE, total cell number of ALN and dorsal skin tissue, absolute cell number of CD4+, CD8+, B220+CD23+ in the ALN. SEI orally administration also increased absolute cell number of CD8+/CD3+ and decreased Gr-1+/CD11b+ in PBMCs, decreased CD4+ in dorsal skin tissue, inhibited IL-5, IL-13 mRNA expression. Infiltration levels of inflammatory immune cells, mast cells and thickness of epidermis decreased in dorsal skin tissue. Conclusions SEI can regulate allergic inflammatory response suppressed the gene expression and production of cytokines that mediate allergic reactions, and will be able to be effectively utilized in the treatment of atopic dermatitis future.

  • Quality characteristics of Chrysanthemum indicum L. flower tea were investigated with the number of pan-firing. Total nitrogen, tannin and caffeine contents of tea were increased as the number of pan-firing increased, whereas chlorophyll and total amino acid (AA) contents were decreased. TAA content was in the range of $5,226{\sim}6,561mg%$ with the number of pan-firing. The content of caffeine and chlorophyll was not changed with the number of pan-firing. As the number of pan-firing increased, total polyphenol, flavonoid content, and antioxidant activity was also increased. The highest total polyphenol and flavonoid content was 17.44 and 11.09 mg/g at 7 times pan-firing, respectively. Total antioxidant activity was the highest value of 16.45 mg AA eq/g at 7 times of pan-firing. Based on the sensory evaluation, the best overall quality of the tea was obtained with 5 times of pan-firing.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of planting time on the survival rate and growth. Ilex cornuta Lindl., I. aquifolium 'Silver Queen', Ardisia pusilla 'Variegata', and Rhododendron indicum(Satsuki azalea) were planted in pottery pot six times such as April 1, June 1, July 1, August 1, October 1, and December 1 in 2017. The survival rate of I. cornuta Lindl. planted in April, October, and December was 100%, whereas the survival rates were 90% in June, 50% in July, and 60% in August, respectively. The survival rates of I. aquifolium 'Silver Queen' and R. schlippenbachii were also shown about 60% in July and 70% in August, which were lower than in the other planting times at 100%. However, the survival rate of A. pusilla 'Variegata' was shown 100% in the all planting times. The growth rates of plant length, plant height or leaf length or any others of I. cornuta Lindl. were shown 20.0%, 15.5% and 16.5% planted in June, July, and August, respectively, while those planted in April, October and December were 3.2%, 12.3% and 10.7% respectively. Similarly, the growth rates of leaf numbers and plant length of I. cornuta Lindl., A. pusilla 'Variegata', and R. indicum(Satsuki azalea) planted in summer season from June to August for all plat (not only leaf numbers and plant length in was facilitated, while the growth was restrained in planting for spring or autumn. Therefore, the plantation during summer is better for increasing the survival rate and promoting the growth.

  • Seed samples of sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) from Chung-nam Provincial Office of Rural Development were infected by 12 fungi. Alternaria sesamicola, A. tenuis and Corynespora cassicola were the predominant fungi. Except C. cassicola, all fungi were almost completly reduced and wipid out the infections by pretreatment with chlorine. Plating of seed components also indicate that C. cassicola was well-established infections. In infection experiment C. cassicola produced severe leaf and stem spots and blights on sesame plants and showed severe seed and seedling rot.

  • Korean folk medicine 'DulGugWha' has been used to cure common cold, cough and chronic and acute gastiritis in Korea. The botanical origin of the crude drug has never been studied pharmacognostically. To clarify the botanical origin of 'DulGugWha', the morphological and anatomical characteristics of Chrysanthemum species growing in Korea, i.e. C. boreale, C. indicum, C. zawadskii and C. zawadskii var. latilobum were studied. As a result, 'DulGugWha' was proved to be the whole plant body of Chrysanthemum boreale of Compositae.
