  • Sulfanilic acid (4-aminobenzenesulfonic acid) alone is normally not permeant in bacteria but can be readily delivered via the microbial dipeptide transport system. A dipeptidyl derivative of this compound, L-phenylalanyl-L-2-sulfanilylglycine (PSG), prepared by attachment of its primary amino group to the phenylalanyl $\alpha$-glycine moiety, appeared to have a Km of 0.125 mM and a Vmax of 1.9 nmoles/ml/min ($A_{660}$, 1.0) in Escherichia coli. From competitive spectrophotometric analysis, it was found that the type of amino acids in both of the N- and C-terminals affected the kinetic power of dipeptides. The growth inhibitory effect of PSG was over 7 times more potent than that of the sulfanilic acid against E. coli, suggesting that this potential inhibition was presumably due to the increased hydrophobic nature of the sulfanilyl dipeptide.

  • In the present study, the protective effect of Scutellaria baicalensis against DNA damage in HL-60 cells exposed to $^{60}$ Co ${\gamma}$-rays was evaluated using micronuclei formation and alkaline single cell gel electrophoresis (SCGE, comet assay). The frequency of micronuclei was decreased in groups treated with water extract (P<0.01), polysaccaride fraction (P<0.01) and methanol fraction (P<0.01) before/after exposure to 200 cGy of ${\gamma}$-rays.(omitted)

  • Pharmacological studies on the water extracts of Sambbcus latipnna var. coreana have confirmed that there are: 1) Remarkable sedative actions in preteated mice with C.N.B (caffeine and sodium benzoate) by the administration of intraperitoneal injection. 2) Antihypertensive actions in rabbits intraperitoneally injected with the extract, and as antihypertensive components, rutin, and crystal A (m.p. $250{\sim}254^{\circ}$, Liberman-Buchard's reaction, positive) were isolated from Sambucus latipinna var. coreana. 3) Marked diuretic actions in mice intramuscular injection with the dose of 600mg/kg.

  • We evaluated the sensory characteristics of Gangjung base obtained from various manufacturers, using a sensory descriptive analysis. Significant differences were observed for all sensory attributes of Gangjung samples with the exception of 'toothpacking'. Sample A showed high intensities for 'external color', 'external roughness', 'sweetness', 'toasted soybean powder flavor', 'crispness', 'fracturability', 'oiliness', and 'loose particles,' whereas it had low intensities for 'rice flour flavor', 'hardness', and 'toughness' compared to those of other samples. Sample B had more 'sourness', 'butyric acid flavor', 'fermented rice flavor', and 'degree of melting' but lower 'air cell size', 'fracturability', and 'flake roughness'. Sample C showed high intensities for 'expansion', 'hardness', 'crispness', and 'flake roughness', whereas sample D showed low intensities for 'expansion' and 'sourness'. These results indicate that Gangjung base samples are markedly different depending on the manufacturer.

  • Cylindrocarpon destructans causes root rot disease in ginseng and can survive for a long time, producing chlamydospores. We optimized conditions to induce chlamydospore production from the conidia of C. destructans, isolated from Korean ginseng. This will provide the basis for testing the efficacy of control agents targeting these chlamydospores.

  • We demonstrate a next-generation high-capacity mobile fronthaul based on radio over fiber (RoF) technology, which links between a digital unit and a radio unit supporting two frequency assignments and $2{\times}2$ multiple input, multiple output antennas. To confirm the technical feasibility of a mobile fronthaul, we experimentally investigate its down- and uplink end-to-end performances including the optical and radio frequency (RF) signal path. Frequency-dependent performance deviations, error vector magnitude variations, overall system performance variations caused by optical to electrical conversion, and intermediate frequency to RF conversions are examined. Experimental verifications on multiple LTE uplink signals are performed for the first time. We also demonstrate several commercial mobile Internet services, YouTube video streaming, and file transfers using off-the-shelf mobile devices, through a mobile fronthaul based on RoF.

  • In this paper, we investigate two types of in-phase and quadrature-phase (IQ) data transfer methods for cloud multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) network operation. They are termed "after-precoding" and "before-precoding". We formulate a cloud massive MIMO operation problem that aims at selecting the best IQ data transfer method and transmission strategy (beamforming technique, the number of concurrently receiving users, the number of used antennas for transmission) to maximize the ergodic sum-rate under a limited capacity of the digital unit-radio unit link. Based on our proposed solution, the optimal numbers of users and antennas are simultaneously chosen. Numerical results confirm that the sum-rate gain is greater when adaptive "after/before-precoding" method is available than when only conventional "after-precoding" IQ-data transfer is available.

  • The natural dyeing of silk fabrics with Rumex crispus L. root extract was investigated. The dyeability of Rumex crispus L. root extract was evaluated with condition of concentration, temperature, time, repeat-numbers, pH, mordants variables, methods of mordanting, color fastness and antibacterial activity, etc. The wavelength of maximum absorption of the Rumex crispus L. distilled water extract appears at 274 nm and 336 nm, methanol extract was 274 nm and 356 nm. Optical dyeing temperature of silk fabrics was $70^{\circ}C$. The K/S values of the dyed fabrics were increased with increasing dyeing time. Surface colors of dyed fabrics were various by the used mordants; RP-YR-Y range. The color fastness was improved by adding mordants were added except Sn. Dyed silk fabrics with mordants showed antibacterial activity.

  • From the methanol extract of the whole plants of Carpesium macrocephalum $F_R$. et $S_{AV}$., five sesquiterpene lactones (1: carabron, 2: tomentosin, 3: ivalin, 4: 4H-tomentosin, 5: carabrol) and three terpenoids (6: loliolide, 7: vomifoliol, 8: citrusin C) were isolated. The structures and stereochemistry of compounds 1-8 were established on the basis of chemical analysis as well as 1D- and 2D-NMR spectroscopy. Among them, compounds 2, 4, and 6-8 were isolated for the first time from Carpesium species.
