Predation of Asterias amurensis and Asterina pectinifera on Valuable Bivalves at Different Water Temperature (유용 양식패류에 대한 아무르불가사리(Asterias amurensis)와 벨불가사리 (Asterina pectinifera)의 수온별 포식 특성)

  • Effect of predation of starfish Asterias amurensis and Asterina pectinifera under different water temperature in the recirculating seawater vessel was conducted at the invertebrate culture laboratory of Yosu National University from February 1 to February 25, 2000. The highest activity of Asterias amurensis and Asterina pectinifera according to water temperature was obtained at 14$\^{C}$ and 22$\^{C}$. The average individual numbers of Anadara broughtonii predated by Asterias amurensis and Asterina pectinifera were 2.20 and 1.60 at 6$\^{C}$ , 3.60 and 2.00 at 10$\^{C}$, 7.20 and 2.50 at 14$\^{C}$, 3.40 and 6.80 at 22$\^{C}$, 0.80 and 3.90 at 26$\^{C}$, respectively.

Isolation and Characterization of Thermostable Xylanase-producing Paenibacillus sp. DG-22. (내열성 Xylanase를 생산하는 Paenibacillus sp. DG-22 균주의 분리 및 효소 특성)

  • A new moderate thermophilic bacterial strain DG-22 which produces thermostable xylanase was isolated from a timber yard soil in Kyungju, Korea. On the basis of morphological, biochemical and phylogenetic studies the new isolate was identified as a Paenibacillus species. Production of xylanase in this strain was strongly induced by adding xylan to the growth medium and repressed by glucose or xylose. No cellulase activity was detected. The temperature and pH for optimum activity were 8$0^{\circ}C$ and 5.0-5.5, respectively. The crude xylanase was stable at $60^{\circ}C$ and retained 60% of initial activity after 2h at $70^{\circ}C$. Zymogram analysis of the culture supernatant showed two xylanase active bands with molecular masses of 22 and 30 kDa.

Condensation heat transfer characteristics of R-22 and R-407C in micro-fin tubes (마이크로핀관에서의 냉매 R-22, R-407C의 응축전열특성에 관한 연구)

  • Experimental results for forced convection condensation of Refrigerant-22 and ternary Refrigerant-407C(HFC-32/125/134a 23/25/52 wt%) which is being considered as a substitute R-22 inside a horizontal micro-fin tube are presented. The test section was horizontal double-tube counterflow condenser with a length 4,000 mm micro-fin tube, having 8.53 mm ID, 0.2 mm fin height and 60 fins. The range of parameters of mass velocity were varied from 102.1 to 301.0 kg/(m2.s) and inlet quality 1.0. At the given experimental conditions. the average heat transfer coefficients for R-407C were lower than that for R-22 at a micro-fin tube. Over the mass velocity range tested. the PF(penalty factor) for R-22, R-407C were lower than the increasing ratio of heat transfer area by fins, and the EF(enhancement factor) for R-22, R-407C were higher than the increasing ratio of heat transfer area by fins.

Comparative study of InGaN/GaN multi-quantum wells in polar (0001) and semipolar (11-22) GaN-based light emitting diodes

  • We investigated the crystal and the optical properties of GaN-based blue light emitting diodes (LEDs) which were simultaneously grown on c-plane (0001) and semipolar (11-22) GaN templates by using metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). The X-ray rocking curves (XRCs) full width at half maximums (FWHMs) of c-plane (0001) and semipolar (11-22) GaN templates were 275 and 889 arcsec, respectively. In addition, high-resolution X-ray ω-2θ scan showed that satellite peaks of semipolar (11-22) InGaN quantum-wells (QWs) was weaker and broader than that of c-plane (0001) InGaN QWs, indicating that the interface quality of c-plane (0001) QWs was superior to that of semipolar (11-22) QWs. Photoluminescence (PL) and electroluminescence (EL) results showed that the emission intensity and the FWHMs of polar c-plane (0001) LED were much higher and narrower than those of semipolar (11-22) LED, respectively. From these results, we believed that relative poor crystal quality of semipolar (11-22) GaN template might give rise to the poor interfacial quality of QWs, resulting in lower output power than conventional c-plane (0001) GaN-based LEDs.

External Condensation Heat Transfer Coefficients of R22 Alternative Refrigerants and R134a According to the Saturated Vapor Temperature Change on a Smooth Tube (수평관에서 R22 대체냉매 및 R134a의 포화증기 온도변화에 따른 외부 응축 열전달계수에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, external condensation heat transfer coefficients (HTCs) were measured on a horizontal smooth tube at the saturated vapor temperature of $30^{\circ}C,\;39{\circ}C,\;and\;50^{\circ}C$ for R22, R410A, R407C, and R134a with the wall subcooling of $3\~8^{\circ}C$. The HTCs of all refrigerants are the highest at $30^{\circ}C,\;39{\circ}C,\;and\;50^{\circ}C$ in order. This trend is due to its excellent thermodynamic properties of the liquid phase. The measured data of HTCs were compared with the calculated ones by Nusselt's equation for a smooth tube. Measured HTCs of R22, R134a, R410A are $4.2\~7.5\%$ higher than prediction respectively while those of R407C are $15.6\~28.9\%$ lower than the prediction.

Experimental study for the pressure drop of R-22 and R-4O7C during the condensation in the micro-fin tubes (마이크로핀관내에서 R-22와 R-4O7C의 응축압력강하 특성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Experiments were conducted for the investigation of pressure drop inside horizontal micro-fin tubes during the condensation of R-22 and ternary refrigerant. R-407C(HFC-32/125/134a 23/25/62 wt%) as a substitute of R-22. The condenser is a double-tube and counterflow type heat exchanger which is consisted with micro-fin tubes having 60 fins with a length of 4000mm, outer diameter of 9.53mm and fin height of 0.2mm. The mass velocity varied from 102.1 to $301.0kg/(m^2{\cdot}s)$ and inlet quality was fixed as 1.0. From the experimental results. the pressure drop for R-407C was considerably higher than that for R-22. The value of PF(penalty factor) for both of refrigerants was not bigger than the ratio of micro-fin tube area to smooth tube area. Based on the experimental data. correlation was Proposed for the prediction of frictional pressure drop during the condensation of R-22 and R-407C inside horizontal micro-fin tubes.

  • X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy (X-ALD) is a rare peroxisomal disorder, that is rapidly progressive, neurodegenerative, and recessive, and characteristically primary affects the central nervous system white matter and the adrenal cortex. X-ALD is diagnosed basaed on clinical, radiological, and serological parameters, including elevated plasma levels of very long chain fatty acids (VLCFA), such as C24:0 and C26:0, and high C24:0/C22:0 and C26:0/C22:0 ratios. These tests are complemented with genetic analyses. A 7.5-year-old boy was admitted to Department of Pediatrics, Chungnam National University Hospital with progressive weakness of the bilateral lower extremities. Brain magnetic resonance imaging confirmed clinically suspected ALD. A low dose adrenocorticotropic hormone stimulation test revealed parital adrenal insufficiency. His fasting plasma levels of VLCFA showed that his C24:0/C22:0 and C26:0/C22:0 ratios were significantly elevated to 1.609 (normal, 0-1.390) and 0.075 (normal, 0-0.023), respectively. Genomic DNA was extracted from peripheral whole blood samples collected from the patient and his family. All exons of ABCD1 gene were amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using specific primers. Amplified PCR products were sequenced using the same primer pairs according to the manufacturer's instructions. We identified a missense mutation (p.Arg163Leu) in the ABCD1 gene of the proband caused by the nucleotide change 488G>T in exon 1. His asymptomatic mother carried the same mutation. We have reported an unpublished mutation in the ABCD1 gene in a patient with X-ALD, who showed increased ratio of C24:0/C22:0 and C26:0/C22:0, despite a normal VLCFA concentrations.

Biodegradation of diesel oil and n-alkanes (C18, C20, and C22) by a novel strain Acinetobacter sp. K-6 in unsaturated soil

  • A large residual fraction of aliphatic components of diesel prevails in soil, which has adverse effects on the environment. This study identified the most bio-recalcitrant aliphatic residual fraction of diesel through total petroleum-hydrocarbon fractional analysis. For this, the strain Acinetobacter sp. K-6 was isolated, identified, and characterized and investigated its ability to degrade diesel and n-alkanes (C18, C20, and C22). The removal efficiency was analysed after treatment with bacteria and nutrients in various soil microcosms. The fractional analysis of diesel degradation after treatment with the bacterial strains identified C18-C22 hydrocarbons as the most bio-recalcitrant aliphatic fraction of diesel oil. Acinetobacter sp. K-6 degraded 59.2% of diesel oil and 56.4% of C18-C22 hydrocarbons in the contaminated soil. The degradation efficiency was further improved using a combinatorial approach of biostimulation and bioaugmentation, which resulted in 76.7% and 73.7% higher degradation of diesel oil and C18-C22 hydrocarbons, respectively. The findings of this study suggest that the removal of mid-length, non-volatile hydrocarbons is affected by the population of bio-degraders and the nutrients used in the process of remediation. A combinatorial approach, including biostimulation and bioaugmentation, could be used to effectively remove large quantities of aliphatic hydrocarbons persisting for a longer period in the soil.

  • Mitomycin C, chemically reactive antibiotics derived from Streptomyces caespitosus, was introduced to Chinese hamster, Cricetulus griseus, (2n=22) cells (22Emb. ♀5PSP ♂, to carry out an analysis of the chromosome aberration. It was found that regions 5 and 7 of chromosomes 1 and 2, and secondary constriction of chromosome X showed the most striking effect of Mitomycin C. The relationship between Mitomycin C and secondary contriction was discussed.

Prediction and Experiment of Pressure Drop of R22, R407C and R410A on Design Conditions of Condenser (응축기의 설계조건에서 R22, R407C, R410A의 압력강하 예측 및 실험)

  • An experimental study on the refrigerant-side pressure drop of slit fin-tube heat exchanger has been carried out. A comparison was made between the predictions of previously proposed empirical correlations and experimental data for the pressure drop on design conditions of condenser in micro-fin tube for R22 and its alternatives, R407C (R32/125/134a, 23/25/52 wt.%) and R410A (R32/125, 50/50 wt.%). Experiments were carried out under the conditions of inlet refrigerant temperature of 6$0^{\circ}C$ and mass fluxes varying from 150 to 250 kg/$m^2$s for R22, R407C and R410A. The inlet air conditions are dry bulb temperature of 35$^{\circ}C$, relative humidity of 40% and air velocity varying from 0.68 to 1.43 m/s. Experiments show that pressure drop for R410A and R407C were 17.8∼20.2% and 5∼6.8% lower than those of R22 respectively for the degree of subcooling of 5$^{\circ}C$. For the mass fluxes of 200∼250 kg/$m^2$s, the deviation between the experimental and predicted values for the pressure drop was less than $\pm$20% for R22, R407C and R410A.
