  • E-reviews, electronic reviews, are generally perceived as trustworthy and credible by the consumers, because it is based on the experiences of other consumers who are independent of the marketers. Therefore, consumers may rely more on the review information as an important cue than direct experience or advertising. This paper explored the structural equation model to investigate the relationships among search motives of e-reviews, attributes of e-review, trust, and purchase intention for cosmetics. A self-questionnaire was developed based on previous researches. Data were collected from 300 female university students experienced purchasing cosmetics at the Internet and were analyzed by AMOS 20.0. Results showed that e-review attributes consisted of three factors: expertise/visuality, quality/functionality and advertising/design. Utilitarian and hedonic search motives were significantly related to expertise/ visuality attributes of e-review and then influenced the purchase intention for cosmetics, mediated by the trust of e-review. However, quality/functionality attributes related by utilitarian motive did not have a significant effect to trust of e-review and purchase intention for cosmetics. Regardless of search motives and trust of e-review, advertising/design attributes of e-review directly related to purchase intention of cosmetics. As predicted, the trust of e-review was an important mediated variable to stimulate the purchase intention of cosmetics at internet. The implications of findings for research and practice are discussed.

  • This paper aims to contribute to estimating the value of a patent by explaining the unobservable attributes of patent quality using observable patent citation indices. The paper first constructs patent citation data and identifies firm, university, and research institute among assignees, and then tries to explain attributes of patent quality using backward citation indices. Backward citation indices carrying information about technological sources which a given patent is based on turn out to be good predictors of forward citation indices carrying information about attributes of patent quality. Finding the functional relationships between attributes of patent quality and backward citations will lead to the improved estimation and prediction of patent value. It is found out that backward citation indices are strongly correlated the technological diversity of a patent. The paper also suggests that with whom an organization chooses to collaborate affects the attributes of patent quality.

  • This paper suggests an integrated method for discovering knowledge from a large database. Our approach applies an attribute-oriented concept hierarchy ascension technique to extract generalized data from actural data in databases, induction of decision trees to measure the value of information, and knowledge reduction of rough set theory to remove dispensable attributes and attribute values. The integrated algorithm first reduce the size of database for the concept generalization, reduces the number of attributes by way of elimination condition attributes which have little influence on decision attribute, and finally induces simplified decision rules removing the dispensable attribute values by analyzing the dependency relationships among the attributes.
