  • This study analyzed the effect of NPD(New Product Development) strategy and standardized NPD activity on NPD performance in KODAK companies. As a result of this study, companies with a specific NPD strategy that can lead and integrate NPD programs were 48.5% and companies without NPD strategy were 51.5% among KOSDAQ companies, which showed that companies without NPD programs were relatively higher than companies with NPD programs. According to result of NPD performance, success rate of new product showed 51.2% and success rate of new product revenue showed 44.87%, but respondents who evaluated NPD performance as "very successful" and "successful" were 53% based on the study of 77 various industries by Kuczmarski & Associates in America in 1993, and the companies in this study showed relatively below-average marks to the result of the study examined by USA PDMA in 1995 as compared to 59% of NPD success rate according to the 2nd study of best practice in 1995 by USA PDMA(Product Development & Management Association). As a result of testing the difference between NPD performances depending on whether company has NPD strategy or not, it showed a significant difference in success rate of NPD depending on NPD strategy and had a higher success rate of NPD as company has NPD strategy. Although NPD activity does not provide with documented process, companies which follow clearly recognized procedure until individual business for product development is completed were 39.6%, indicating that KOSDAQ companies still have fewer standardized NPD procedure than USA companies with 76% as compared to the result of 1990 PDMA in America. As a result of ANOVA test, NPD success rate showed the difference depending on the presence of officially documented process. As a result of Scheffe and Bonferroni test as post hoc test, companies with officially documented process, carrying out a series of business in a given section showed a higher NPD success rate by 18.385 at the 5% significance level than companies with individual business procedure without officially documented process. The difference of this research from the previous studies is that the findings of PDMA in America throughout the United States were applied to the domestic KOSDAQ companies. In addition, the existing studies related to NPD in Korea were conducted for some limited industries in the past, but this study was applied to various industries of KOSDAQ companies. The implications of this study suggest that it is necessary for KOSDAQ Industry Association or other related governmental departments to educate and guide the standardized process about NPD for increasing survival rate and reinforcing competitiveness of the companies.

  • The present study aims to examine the role of market orientation as an international partnership property. This property, labeled export-venture market orientation, is at the inter-firm level and is related to the new market development (NMD) activities of export-ventures. Specifically, this article is to define the export-venture market orientation; to argue that it is a major factor in NMD export-venture success; and to argue that the resource-advantage (R-A) theory of competition can provide a theoretical foundation for this concept and explain its contribution to export-ventures' international expansion success. This manuscript is conceptual in approach. In their efforts to strengthen relationships, export-ventures may tend to focus so much time on the partnership factors that they miss market opportunities. As a spanning process, NMD should be informed by both external and internal activities. In an export-venture, market orientation helps guide NMD activities from outside to inside and vice versa. As a dynamic and disequilibrium provoking process, the R-A theory can theoretically ground the concept of export-venture market orientation and explain its role in NMD export-venture success. The current study contributes to business marketing theory in three ways: it extends the concept of intra-organizational market orientation to an inter-organizational context; contributes to understanding the role of idiosyncratic resources in export-ventures; and theoretically explains the concept of export-venture market orientation. The present study is the first to extend the concept of market orientation into inter-organizational NMD framework and to examine the role of export-venture market orientation in NMD export-venture success.

  • Loyalty programs are everywhere these days, and among them, coalition programs, where a hub company makes a network of participating companies and users can collect and use points in a large number of participating shops, are in increase. There is little research on the coalition loyalty program. Using the case of OKCashbag, the first and biggest coalition loyalty program in Korea, this study examines whether success factors of single operator program are relevant to coalition programs. This paper contributes first by turning attention to an unexplored area of coalition loyalty programs. By offering an opportunity to reflect on success factors of both single operator and coalition programs, it will help practitioners in loyalty programs to develop innovative loyalty programs using increasingly sophisticated data collection capabilities of IT.

  • Due to globalization, more foreign-owned small businesses have been joining the South Korean economy. In order to better support the growth, this study's purpose is to identify foreign entrepreneur demographics and company information as well as entrepreneurial motivations and perceived success factors. To fulfill these goals, a survey of 98 immigrant entrepreneurs from 31 countries doing business within the local Korean market was conducted. The results show that most foreign-owned small businesses are service-oriented and primarily started for intrinsic reasons. It was also identified that the perceived business success determinants that the government can most directly affect are skills-based, rather than infrastructure or financially oriented. Furthermore, top issues include unreliable employees, language barrier and too much competition. The findings of this study are particularly relevant to both academics and policy makers alike because almost no prior foreign entrepreneur-focused research has been conducted in Korea.

  • Though start-ups by small businessmen are increasing year by year, the success rate of start-ups have been low. Accordingly, it is necessary to look at various ways to improve the success rate of start-ups by small businessmen. Most previous studies on the issue have focused on identifying influential factors that lead to the success and growth of start-ups by them, mostly based upon quantitative perspectives. Few has approaced with qualitative perspective such as actual case studies in academic papers. In this study, after analyzing a wide range of successful cases of start-ups by small businessmen, we will develop countermeasures by business types and suggest practical lessons that can be appropriately utilized in starting a new small business.

  • To achieve the age of 30,000 dollars GNP, The business with speed will hold a more crucial point than the business with scale, and the mass consumption market will be transformed and changed into the niche market. Moreover, it will not be easy for the company without the peculiar and creative technology to survive in the severe competition. Under these circumstances, The innovative company which knows how to use this new paradigm will select the better position in the changing market. Innovation type SMEs are contributing in maintaining the international competitiveness of domestic economy by serving high-tech and the promotion of employment. Also, Innovation type SMEs have the most important economic leverage in our domestic economy. It's a source of the growth in domestic economy. Therefore, A lot of countries have been trying to support innovation type SMEs (with a small capital and high-tech). And many countries also try to protect and promote the innovation type SMEs. Especially the Korean government is also promoting innovation type SMEs in many ways, because the future of innovation type SMEs are not bright. This study explored the three innovative SEMs and studied 1) entrepreneur characteristics, 2) the industry environment, 3) competitive strategies, and 4) resources and capabilities of organization, which have been considered as the success factors for entrepreneurial firms. This study also holds that the characteristics of entrepreneurs is one of the most important factor to impact the success of innovative SMEs. Most of entrepreneurs have started their business with high education career and field experiences and have high intentions in developing new/high techonologies, challenging spirits, and clear vision and goals. The innovative SMEs with small kinds of products and services, narrow market, and small resources are more sensitively impacted by the environment especially. But the SMEs which entered into market early could have the comparative excellencies in their market to survive and grow in the future. They also have competitive advantages in the market using differentiation strategies by technology innovation. Technology innovation and differention strategies are one of the success factors in SMEs, They entered into the niche market using this weapons. The capabilities of changing organization to their changing environment, the open orgarnization culture, the continuous employment education, and the building the organic organization are also success factors of innovative SMEs. The SMEs with the simple organization structure can make fast decisions and operate with the autonomous and flexible ways. These only three cases will not shown successful factors of over 12,000 Innovation type SMEs in Korea and this study of Innovation type SMEs is insufficient from all aspects.
