Diversification Strategy through Market Creation: The Case of CJ Group

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate upon a diversification strategy through market creation of CJ Group, which has contributed in positioning of the firm as one of the leading conglomerates in South Korea. With such objective, the background of CJ Group, followed by its business diversification strategies were explored, with reference to several case studies. The history of CJ Group began with establishment of CheilJedang Industrial Corporation in 1953, as the first domestic sugar producer and exporter of South Korea. The corporation gradually expanded its business ever since at both national and global level, to include the fields of food production, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and life chemicals. Later, CheilJedang (CJ) Group was established as an affiliate of CheilJedang Industrial Corporation. With such independence, extension of business has been witnessed across the industries of media, entertainment, finance, information technology and distribution. Thus, the current CJ Group pursues to define itself as a progressive global living culture company with four major business categories from food and food service, biotechnology, entertainment and media, and logistics. Despite its success in today's market, CJ Group underwent hardships in its business diversification in 1990s due to indiscreet management, along with the Asian financial crisis. Here, many firms overcame the financial difficulties by taking advantage of the exchange rate for overseas expansion. Though, CJ Group tried to differentiate itself by focusing on the domestic market by creating something out of nothing. Hence, CJ Group takes a unique position among many cases of business diversification and their categorization. In an effort to identify and classify the types of growth experienced by the top 30 companies in South Korea, the firms were categorized into four groups according to their diversification strategies adapted after the Asian financial crisis. Based on the mode and time of entry, corporations were identified either as the 'Explorer', 'Invader', 'Venture Capitalist', or 'Assimilator'. Here, the majority of the firms showed the qualities of Invader, entering mature markets through large-scaled mergers and acquisitions. However, CJ Group was the only firm that was categorized as an Explorer, for its focus on the newly emerging service sector in culture-contents industry. This diversification strategy through market creation is worth examining, due to its contribution in generating simultaneous growth between the market and the company itself. Diverse brands of CJ Group have been referred to as case studies in this regard, from 'Hatban', 'Cine de Chef', 'VIPS' to 'CJ GLS'. These four businesses, each to represent processed food, film, restaurant service, and logistics industries respectively, show CJ Group's effectiveness in creating a whole new category of goods and services that are innovative. In fact, such businesses not only contributed in advancement of consumers' wellbeing, but toward generating additional value and employment. It is true that the diversification strategy of CJ Group requires long-term capital investment with high risk, compared to the other strategies mentioned in the paper. However, this model does create high employment and additional values that are positive to both the society and the firm itself. Therefore, the paper comes to a conclusion that the diversification strategy through market creation conveys the most positive impact relative to the others.

A Study of Creative Strategy of Luxury and Domestic Fashion Advertisement (해외명품광고(海外名品廣告)와 국내(國內)패션광고(廣告)의 크리에이티브 전략(戰略)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究))

  • The purpose of this study was to comparatively analyze advertisements of prestigious products and domestic fashion brands through fashion magazines. Especially, a comparative analysis of creative advertising strategies of prestigious products and fashion brands will be vital in establishing advertising strategies and marketing planning of domestic fashion brands. This study targeted and analyzed all the advertisements of prestigious fashion products and domestic career women's high-end casual brands printed in VOGUE KOREA and ELLE KOREA in 2005 and 2006. Descriptive statistics and x2-test were used. As a result of the analysis, prestigious product advertisements accounted for 197 (57.9%), and domestic fashion 143 (42.1%) out of a total of 764. Except for duplicates, the 340 advertisements analyzed, were selected for this study. Luxury fashion brand advertising accounted for more than domestic fashion brands in the magazines studied. That is luxury fashion brands have greater exposure to consumers. Based on the results drawn in this study for fashion products, various and unique advertising strategies utilizing visual factors that most effectively delivered to consumers are imminently needed as creative strategy measures in domestic fashion advertising.

  • Today the theme of "IT Architecture" has become a topic of special interest in both public and private sectors. Based on the literature survey on information systems planning and information architecture, IT architecture may be viewed as the outcome of evolution, rather than revolution. A case study was conducted in order to compare the tasks and deliverables of U.S. IT architecture and Korean Information Strategy Planning. No significant differences were found in tasks or deliverables. Implications of the study were discussed.

  • Entrepreneurship scholars have defined Corporate Entrepreneurship (CE) in many ways. Generally, works from these scholars had discussed on the common aspects of CE, benefits of CE, types of CE and ways to cultivate and design CE for companies. These scholars also developed models of CE to construct a framework for mapping CE research. From here, the present writers have presented a proposed framework to see how far the factors of CE, their business strategy and external environment influenced the developers' firm performance in housing development industry. However, this is just the initial stage of the study and the model needs to be revised before it can be tested in the field.

  • LED (Light Emitting Diode) lighting is gaining more and more market penetration as one of the global warming countermeasures. LED is the next generation of fusion source composed of epi/chip/packaging of semiconductor process technology and optical/information/communication technology. LED has been applied to the existing industry areas, for example, automobiles, TVs, smartphones, laptops, refrigerators and street lamps. Therefore, LED makers have been striving to achieve the leading position in the global competition through development of core source technologies even before the promotion and adoption of LED technology as the next generation growth engine with eco-friendly characteristics. However, there has been a point of view on the cost compared to conventional lighting as a large obstacle to market penetration of LED. Therefore, companies are developing a Chip-Scale Packaging (CSP) LED technology to improve performance and reduce manufacturing costs. In this study, we perform patent analysis associated with Flip-Chip CSP LED and flow chart for promising technology forecasting. Based on our analysis, we select key patents and key patent players to derive the business strategy for the business success of Flip-Chip CSP PKG LED products.

  • At present, tendency of ERP(Enterprise Resource Planning) enterprises is that many ERP enterprises from abroad are rushing into capture of small and medium enterprises at home actively. SAP Korea and Korean Oracle have already showed their new product targeting domestic market of small or medium standing enterprise, and more, even MS(Micro Soft) also rushes into this market in earnest. The domestic business circle of ERP should prepare countermeasure by raising the perfection of product and having good command of minute marketing strategy to survive from aggressive strategy of SMB market. In addition, about the computerization of main affairs of business, ordering developing process was general that developing staffs analysed the affairs of each department that needed computerization and construct according to the operation process by using different tools, but condition is changing that businesses themselves are purchasing business application package from expert soft program enterprise and construct. Therefore, in this study, I try to grasp the problem of management, and define a new process that can help for more efficient management by making it an object producing and management module of enterprise 'K' that is one of domestic small and medium enterprise and that is operating ERP at present. As well, through the analysis of affair related producing, we are aiming to prepare for establishment of target, its range, and making the standard of result evaluation.

  • Since 1999, mobile internet service has been increasing rapidly. According to the Ministry of Information and Communication (MIC) of the Republic of Korea, the size of mobile service market is forecasted to be valued at approximately 10.5 trillion won in 2007. For this reason, many mobile service providers have adopted customer-centered strategy for the successful business in the mobile internet services. Thus, this research examines the rations of service quality, user satisfaction, and additional use intentions with 88 users (male and female) of mobile internet service using structural equation model (SEM). The result shows that there is a difference between male and female using mobile internet service regarding the quality factors of mobile internet service. This study provides some guidelines for the successful strategic planning of customer-centered mobile internet services in gender.

Business Process Evaluation and Case Study for Sequential Application of BPM

  • Adoption and practical application of BPM yet remains at a theoretic and methodological level for many industrial sectors. As for construction industry, adapting BPM into enterprise resource across all business processes could cause problems due to rapid change in corporate operation systems. Furthermore, it is unable to predict potential risks of business process while BPM are being applied. Therefore, applying BPM model to core strategy and individual task seems more effective than applying BPM model to the entire enterprise resource planning. In this paper, we define BPM and suggest a BPM model by analyzing each business unit in order to evaluate each business unit which is included in the business process architecture based on quantitative standards. This paper also presents a sequential application plan for business process model. Finally, a case study is demonstrated for the application of BPM system, focusing on cost management business, which turned out to be a top priority in the aspect of efficiency and ease based on priority analysis.

  • The objective of this case study is to analyze how effectively KIA K5, which is a leading mid-size car brand, has positioned itself into the mid-size car market. Before KIA launched the K5, Sonata and SM5 were the leading brands in the mid-size car market. They had loyal customers who like their similar images. As many competitors keep launching new brands or new designs into the car industry, Sonata and SM5 were pressured to introduce new versions. But, the YF Sonata and the New SM5 failed to catch up with the new trends in the market. Whilst YF Sonata was perceived as too innovative, the New SM5 was treated as an old car by the target customers of the mid-size car. While the two leading brands struggled to attract customers, KIA K5 found a new market space by identifying and focusing on the lucrative replace and up-grade demand segment and filling the gap between the current product category values and the emerging mid-size car category values. The K5 found the right values that customers need and successfully articulated the values to the customers. This case study illustrates that a successful positioning strategy can be effectively employed to attract customers in the saturated car manufacturing industry. This case can be summarized as the successful positioning strategy of KIA K5 is comprised of four primary pillars: design innovation, market analysis, STP (segmentation, targeting, and positioning), and launch strategy. The KIA K5 case study provides valuable insights and implications for many other companies that are planning to find a proper positioning strategy for their own business.

  • Odoo is an enterprise resource planning information system providing modules to support the basic business function in companies. This research will look into the development of an additional module at Odoo. This module is a data mining module using Market Basket Analysis (MBA) using FP-Growth algorithm in managing OLTP of sales transaction to be useful information for users to improve the analysis of company business strategy. The FP-Growth algorithm used in the application was able to produce multidimensional association rules. The company will know more about their sales and customers' buying habits. Performing sales trend analysis will give a valuable insight into the inner-workings of the business. The testing of the module is using the data from X Supermarket. The final result of this module is generated from a data mining process in the form of association rule. The rule is presented in narrative and graphical form to be understood easier.
