Guided waves inspection techniques that are different with inspection technique by bulk waves are widely used in pipe line evaluation due to advantages of long distance inspection. However, most of pipe lines at industrial fields are buried and/or coated. In this case, due to the attenuation effect from soil and/or coating material, there are a lot of difficulty on inspection by conventional ultrasonic technique. In this paper, guided waves propagating patterns are calculated with respect to excitation mode by Normal Mode Expansion(NME). Guided waves patterns based on excited by single transducer and guided wave focusing technique have employed to analyze focusing pattern on a pipe. A longitudinal mode and high order flexural modes are used with various number of transducers to determine sensitivity. Guided waves energy excited by multi transducer with focusing algorithm was successfully focused at a desired point.

The complaint was filed for the cold water damage to rice in accordance with the installation of buried drain pipes in the mountainous areas of the valley. Field research was conducted in order to identify and analyze relevance of cold water damage to rice with underground drain pipe installation. In conclusion, water temperature was analyzed by 0.5 to $4.5^{\circ}C$ lower than before the installation of underground drain pipes, so the cold water damage to rice was likely to occur at the rice paddy field using cold water passing through the underground drain pipe. Therefore, the rice harvest was estimated to be impossible without appropriate measures of water temperature rise such as use of small unshaded warming basins, before water is applied to fields.
In recently years, it has become important to detect underground objects of various marterials including metals, such as detecting the location of sink holes and pipe. For this reason, ground penetrating radar(GPR) technology is attracting attention in the field of underground detection. GPR irradiates the radar wave to find the position of the object buried underground and express the reflected wave from the object as image. However, it is not easy to interpret GPR images because the features reflected from various objects underground are similar to each other in GPR images. Therefore, in order to solve this problem, in this paper, to estimate the piping position in the GRP image according to the threshold value using the CNN (Convolutional Neural Network) model based on deep running, which is widely used in the field of image recognition, As a result of the experiment, it is proved that the pipe position is most reliably detected when the threshold value is 7 or 8.
According to the requirements of ANSI B3l.8, the pipe thickness is determined with hoop stress resulted from internal pressure. And the other loads induced by soil, vehicle, thermal expansion, ground subsidence, etc shall be evaluated rationally. There are two ways of calculating stress of buried gas pipeline. The first is FEM. FEM can calculate the stress regardless of the complexity of pipeline shape and boundary conditions. But it needs high cost and long time. The second is the way to use equation. The reliable equations to calculate the stress of buried gas pipeline was developed and have been used in designing pipeline and evaluating pipeline safety, But these equation are very difficult to understand and use for non-specialist. For easy calculation of non-specialist, the new computer program to calculate stress of buried natural gas pipeline have been developed. The stress is calculated by the equations and extrapolation of the graph resulted from FEM. The full paper is consist of series I and II. In this paper, series I, the calculating equation of the program is explained in detail.
Anatahan Volcano in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) erupted for the first time in recorded history on 10 May 2003. The underwater acoustic records of earthquakes, explosions, and tremor produced during the eruption were recorded on a sound-channel hydrophone deployed in February 2003. Acoustic propagation models show the seismic to acoustic conversion at Anatahan is particularly efficient, aided by the slope of the seamount toward the hydrophone. The hydrophone records confirm the onset of earthquake activity at 01:53Z on 10 May, as well as the onset (at ${\~}$06:20Z) of continuous, low-frequency (5-40 Hz) acoustic energy that is likely volcanic tremor related to magma intrusion. The hydrophone recorded a total of 458 earthquakes associated with the eruption. To predict the character of acoustic signals generated from Anatahan, we developed a moment-tensor representation of a volcano-seismic source that is governed by the geometry of the source and the physical properties of the magma. A buried magmatic pipe model was adopted, and numerically modeling source parameters such as the pipe radius and magma viscosity enable us to grasp the inward nature of Anatahan Volcano.
The ultrasonic guided wave propagates along with the given structure's wall direction. Because of this specific character, the ultrasonic guided waves arc used in many other fields. Especially, it can be readily utilized for nondestructive inspection of various structures that are made up of gas pipes, heat exchanger tubes, and thin plates. Further, the guided wave technology can be readily utilized when inspecting pipes or thin plates which pose high risk of the accident but for which the nondestructive inspection itself is impossible because it is difficult to get to them since they are coated or buried underground. In the other hand, conventional ultrasonic testing such as thickness gauging uses bulk waves and only tests the region of structure immediately below the transducer. As a result of the application about inlet and outlet cooling water line using guided wave test, we conformed that the overall corrosions were in the lower side of the 304.8 mm inlet valve and these corrosions were engaged in not locally but through the lower side of the valve line. In the near future, we can expect that the detectable defect size is smaller than before along with the development of the sensing technology.
Manholes and underground spaces are installed to manage the buried heat transport pipes of the district heating system, and the corrosion damage of the equipment placed in this space often occurs. The purpose of this work is to identify locations with a high risk of corrosion damage in the air vent and to establish preventive measures based on precise analysis via sampling of heat transport pipes and air vents that have been used for about 30 years. The residual thickness of the air vent decreased significantly by reaching ~1.1 mm in thickness, and locations of 60~70 mm away from a transport pipe were the most vulnerable to corrosion. The energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analysis was performed in the corroded oxides, and it was found that chloride ion was contained in the corrosion products. Anodic polarization tests were carried out on the air vent materials (SPPS250, SS304) with varying the amounts of chloride ions at two different temperatures (RT, 80℃). The higher concentration of chloride ions and temperature are, the lower corrosion resistances of both alloys are.

Water pipeline network in local and metropolitan area is buried underground, by which it is hard to know the degree of pipe aging and leakage. In this study, assuming various sensor combinations installed in the water pipeline network, the optimal algorithm was derived by predicting the water flow rate and pressure through artificial intelligence algorithms such as linear regression and neuro fuzzy analysis to examine the possibility of detecting pipe leakage according to the data combination. In the case of leakage detection through water supply pressure prediction, Neuro fuzzy algorithm was superior to linear regression analysis. In case of leakage detection through water supply flow prediction, flow rate prediction using neuro fuzzy algorithm should be considered first. If flow meter for prediction don't exists, linear regression algorithm should be considered instead for pressure estimation.
Characteristic behaviors of geo-structure during freezing and thawing process have to be understood based on fundamental knowledge on phase change in porous soil and interaction between soil and structure. Inversion analysis using published one-dimensional soil freezing tests was conducted to suggest a mechanical model to consider an effect of the ice saturation on Young's modulus. Silty soil was more sensitive to temperature than weathered granite soil and sand, and weathered granite soil was more affected by initial water saturation in stiffness decrease than silty soil. Numerical simulations on chilled gas pipeline showed that shielding effect from surrounding frozen zone around the pipe decreases impact from external load onto the pipe. And a pipe installed in sand backfill showed more heaving due to relatively low stiffness of sand during freezing than that of surrounding in-situ weather granite soil. However, it had more stable stress condition due to effective stress redistribution from external load.
This paper presents finite element (FE) analyses to clarify the effects of external pressure on the residual stresses in a girth-welded steel pipe. At first, FE simulation of the girth welding process is carried out to obtain the weld-induced residual stresses employing sequentially coupled three-dimensional (3-D) thermo-mechanical FE formulation. Then, 3-D elastic-plastic FE analyses incorporating the residual stresses and plastic strains obtained from the preceding FE simulation are performed to investigate the residual stress behavior in the girth-welded pipe under external pressure. The FE analysis results show that the hoop compressive stresses induced by the external pressure significantly alter the hoop residual stresses in the course of the mechanical loading.
