The aim of this study is to relieve the poor ventilation problem of the diesel locomotive engine load test building, located in an urban area. This paper evaluates the ventilation performances of the studied load test building based on the temperature measurement experiment and the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) during the engine load test. The temperature rise caused by the radiator blower of the building was turned out to be the main cause of disturbing the thermal conditions of the building. The indoor temperature distributions simulated by Fluent were validated with the temperature measurement results obtained from the studied building. The simulation results indicated that the comfort condition of this building was poor We suggested several remedial changes in the duct structure of this building for the improvement of the comfort conditions. In addition, a prototype drawing combining several improved design options was proposed. and then the simulation of the temperature distribution in the proposed prototype was performed. The result indicated that the indoor thermal condition of this proposed building was improved when compared with that of the current building.
In coastal regions, it is common to witness significant damages on low-rise buildings caused by hurricanes and other extreme wind events. These damages start at high pressure zones or weak building components, and then cascade to other building parts. The state-of-the-art in experimental and numerical aerodynamic load evaluation is to assume buildings with intact envelopes where wind acts only on the external walls and correct for internal pressure through separate aerodynamic studies. This approach fails to explain the effect of openings on (i) the external pressure, (ii) internal partition walls; and (iii) the load sharing between internal and external walls. During extreme events, non-structural components (e.g., windows, doors or rooftiles) could fail allowing the wind flow to enter the building, which can subject the internal walls to lateral loads that potentially can exceed their load capacities. Internal walls are typically designed for lower capacities compared to external walls. In the present work, an anticipated damage development scenario is modelled for a four-story building with a stepped gable roof. LES is used to examine the change in the internal and external wind flows for different level of assumed damages (starting from an intact building up to a case with failure in most windows and doors are observed). This study demonstrates that damages in non-structural components can increase the wind risk on the structural elements due to changes in the loading patterns. It also highlights the load sharing mechanisms in low rise buildings.

The paper describes the conceptual design, structural modelling and wind load analysis of tall buildings. The lateral stiffness of the building can be obtained economically through the interaction of core walls with peripheral frame tube and/or bundle of frame tubes and integrated design of the basement. The main structural components should be properly distributed such that the building will deflect mainly in the direction of the applied force without inducing significant response in other directions and twist. The cost effectiveness can be further enhanced through close consultation between architects and engineers at an early stage of conceptual design. Simplified structural modelling of the building and its response in three principal directions due to wind load are included. Effects of the two main structural components on the performances of a 70-story reinforced concrete building in terms of peak drift and maximum acceleration under wind load are discussed.
About 25% of overall energy use of Korea had been spent in buildings. It is crucial to acknowledge the importance of saving energy in buildings. In order to save energy, it is important to predict accurate energy use. There are numerous energy simulation program that predicts both energy load and energy use. The problem of the energy simulation program is that it holds too many input variables, and it needs experts to model a building. So, our purpose of this study is to develop the simplified thermal load calculation program for building energy analysis which eliminates coordinates of building components instead of using full coordinates by using DOE2. Since the engine of the program is DOE2, we verified the validity of S-DOE by comparing peak heating & cooling load results and annual energy use results. The results shows that there are little difference between VisualDOE and S-DOE. Also it showed that S-DOE took less time to input variables than VisualDOE. These results reveals that the application of S-DOE is possible to accurately predict energy load and energy use of the building and still have strong point that it takes less time to analyse building energy.
Sustainable building is getting more and more important topic in 21C. Following this trend, building energy saving standard has been reinforced in Korea. Especially, insulation standards are revised continuously after1979. This study aims to evaluate the correlation between the revised insulation standards and heating and cooling loads of a residential building. This study shows that the standard of insulation is more related with heating load than cooling load, and cooling load is more related with other sources such as glass types and solar incidence through windows. In case of highly-insulated building such Passive Houses or Zero Energy Houses, the cooling load should also be considered as important as heating load when revising the building energy saving regulations in the future.
Today, the number of super tall buildings are under construction or being planed in Middle East and Asian Countries. For example the burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world, is completed in 2008 and the height of that is about 800m. Also, Lotte World Tower is under construction in Korea. External environmental conditions such as wind speed, air temperature, humidity and solar radiation around the super tall building differs according to the building height due to the vertical micro climate change. However, the meteorological information used for AC design of building is obtained typically from standard surface meterological station data(~2m above the ground). In this paper the effect of the building envelope on heating and cooling load in super tall building considering the meteorological changes with height was analyzed with simulation method. As results of this research, the guideline to select the building envelop alternatives for super tall building will be suggested in this paper.
Recently, There have been many attempts to optimize energy usage in buildings and houses using Information Technology(IT) and the typical implementation can be found in Intelligent Building and Zero Energy Building. These kinds of buildings need to forecast the building loads, estimate the capacity requirement for power supply, and decide the capacity of the main transformer of the building. Currently, the capacity of the main transformer has been decided just using typical load estimation method not considering the load characteristics and patterns. In this paper, we propose a new load estimation method considering the load characteristics and patterns of the builiding. The proposed method was applied to actual mail center and verified the feasibility of application to actual design of buildings.

The energy conservation is one of the most important issues in recent years. Especially, the energy conservation through improved control strategies is one of the most highly possible area to be implemented in the near future. The energy conservation of the ice storage system can be accomplished through the improved control strategies. A real time building load prediction algorithm was developed. The expected highest and the lowest outdoor temperature of the next day were used to estimate the next day outdoor temperature profile. The measured dry bulb temperature and the measured building load were used to estimate system parameters by using the on-line weighted recursive least square method. The estimated hourly outdoor temperatures and the estimated hourly system parameters were used to predict the next day hourly building loads. In order to see the effectiveness of the building load prediction algorithm, two different types of building models were selected and analysed. The simulation results show less than 1% in error for the prediction of the next day building loads. Therefore, this algorithm may successfully be used for the development of improved control algorithms of the ice storage system.

These days, although thermal energy is decreasing, electric energy is increasing in building. Also, it is very important to research and distribute BIPV(Building Integrated photovoltaic) because our society consider electricity more significant than other energy in building. Therefore, in this paper, our research team analyzed difference between BIPV yield and building energy consumption through experimental research. As a result, yearly building energy consumption was 104,602.4kWh and BIPV yield was 105,267kWh. And then, totally counterbalanced time took up 26%, reduced electric load time took up 16%. In other words, peak load could be reduced up to 42% by BIPV. As a result, yearly building energy consumption was 104,602.4kWh and BIPV yield was 105,267kWh. And then, totally counterbalanced time took up 26%, reduced electric load time took up 16%. In other words, peak load could be reduced up to 42% by BIPV.
A Microsoft $Access^{(R)}$ application that estimates hourly building energy load is developed based on statistical field measurements. Hourly patterns of heating, hot water, cooling, and electricity loads are evaluated for an energy consuming community composed of various types of buildings. Popular building types such as apartments, offices, hotels and accomodations, stores, churches, schools and educational institutes are included in the model. For each type of buildings, hourly patterns for a month are measured and compiled to derive a 24-hour load distributions. Daily sum of heating, hot water, cooling, and electricity loads are also measured for the building types. The annual energy need profiles are generated by combining the 24-hour distribution and 365-day consumption patterns. The annual maximum values of the 8760 hours of a year for each load type serves as a guide for selecting a device capacity. A user-friendly interface that ushers users throughout the whole process is provided.
