  • The vibrations caused by metro operation propagate through surrounding soil, further induce secondary vibrations of the nearby underground structures and adjacent buildings. In order to investigate the effects of vibrations caused by metro on use performance of buildings, vibration experiment of Chengdu museum was carried out firstly. Then, the coupling tunnel-soil-structure finite element model was established with software ANSYS detailedly, providing a useful tool for investigating the vibration performances of structures. Furthermore, the dynamic responses and vibration predictions of museum building were obtained respectively by the whole process time-domain analysis and frequency-domain analysis, which were compared with the vibration reference values of museum. Quantitative analyses of the museum building performance were carried out, and the possible tendency and changing laws of vibration level with floors were proposed. Finally, the related vibration isolation measures were compared and discussed. The tests and analysis results show that: The vertical vibration responses almost increased with the increasing of building floors, while weak floors existed for the curve of horizontal vibration; The vertical vibrations were larger than the horizontal vibrations, indicating the vibration performances of building caused by metro were characterized with vertical vibrations; The frequencies of the museum corresponding to the peak vibration levels were around 6~17Hz; The damping effect of structure with 33m-span cantilever on vertical vibration was obvious, however, the damping effect of structure with foundation vibration isolators was not obvious.

  • Seismic activity of Korea is not so high as that of Japan or California and most of the structures were designed without considering the influence of earthquakes until the first seismic design code was enforced in 1988. Therefore, it was very hard to find seismically isolated structures in Korea until 1980's. Korean engineers assumed that the seismic isolation or vibration control would be useful only in a high seismicity region while such technologies can be quite useful in a low seismicity region for the efficient reduction of earthquake damages. Recently, Korean engineers began to have interest in the seismic isolation or vibration control and applied it to some important structures such as LNG storage tanks, many bridges and several buildings. However, design codes are not defining such useful advanced technologies for the design of building structures and several projects employing seismic isolation or vibration control in the design of structures had difficulties in obtaining construction permit from the local government. Therefore, it is an urgent requirement to introduce these advanced technologies in the seismic design code.

  • The feasibility study of a newly proposed smart base isolation system employing magneto-rheological elastomers(MREs) has been carried out. MREs belong to a class of smart materials whose elastic modulus or stiffness can be adjusted by varying the magnitude of the magnetic field. The base isolation systems are considered as one of the most effective devices for vibration mitigation of civil engineering structures such as bridges and buildings in the event of earthquakes. The proposed base isolation system strives to enhance the performance of the conventional base isolation system by improving the robustness of the system wide stiffness range controllable of MREs, which improves the adaptability and helps in better vibration control. To validate the effectiveness of the MRE-based isolation system, an extensive numerical simulation study has been performed using both single-story and five-story building structures employing base isolated devices under several historical earthquake excitations. The results show that the proposed system outperformed the conventional system in reducing the responses of the structure in all the seismic excitations considered in the study.

  • In terms of vibration damage and the serviceability for occupants in buildings, the purpose of vibration study lies in the reduction of vibration damage. However, only when vibration level of buildings is available, measures of vibration control and base isolation can be taken. The purpose of this paper is to provide a fundamental analysis method to estimate structural vibration. After analysing by using two methods, infinite model, combination method, a comparison between analysed results and the results of previous studies was performed to prove the validity of the prediction on the vibration of building structure. Thus, if the material property of soil and quantity of load sources are known before construction being started, the vibration level could be predicted by using these methods.

  • A passive prismatic-shaped isolation platform (PIP) is proposed to realize enhanced quasi-zero stiffness (QZS) effect. The design concept uses a horizontal spring to produce a tunable negative stiffness and installs oblique springs inside the cells of the prismatic structure to provide a tunable positive stiffness. Therefore, the QZS effect can be achieved by combining the negative stiffness and the positive stiffness. To this aim, firstly, the mathematical modeling and the static analysis are conducted to demonstrate this idea and provide the design basis. Further, with the parametric study and the optimal design of the PIP, the enhanced QZS effect is achieved with widened QZS range and stable property. Moreover, the dynamic analysis is conducted to investigate the vibration isolation performance of the proposed PIP. The analysis results show that the widened QZS property can be achieved with the optimal designed structural parameters, and the proposed PIP has an excellent vibration isolation performance in the ultra-low frequency due to the enlarged QZS range. Compared with the traditional QZS isolator, the PIP shows better performance with a broader isolation frequency range and stable property under the large excitation amplitude.

  • In the production of semiconductor wafer, optical and electron microscopes, ion-beam, laser device must maintain their alignments within a sub-micrometer. This equipment requires a vibration free environment to provide its proper function. Especially, lithography and inspection devices, which have sub-nanometer class high accuracy and resolution, have come to necessity for producing more improved giga and tera class semiconductor wafers. This high technology equipments require very strict environmental vibration standard, vibration criteria, in proportion to the accuracy of the manufacturing, inspecting devices. The vibration criteria of high sensitive equipment should be represented in the form of exactness and accuracy, because this is used as basic data for the design of building structure and structural dynamics of equipment. The study on the evaluation of the factors affecting the permissible vibration criteria is required to design the efficient isolation system of the semiconductor manufacturing of equipment. This paper deals with the properties of the effected factor for vibration criteria of high sensitive equipment.

  • To evaluate the seismic performance of a base isolated building accurate analytical model should be selected. The analytical results such as reduced accelerations member forces and relative displacements of the superstructure of the base isolated building are only meaningful when the analytical model is close enough to the real structure. Real size one bay-two story steel frame and two kinds of seismic isolators(laminated elastomeric bearing and lead-rubber bearing) are designed. manufactured and constructed in the laboratory. Free vibration tests using fuse bars were conducted to evaluate the change of dynamic characteristics(period and damping) before and after base isolation of the steel frame. The experimental results of free vibration tests were also used as a bench mark for adjusting the selected analytical modeling to real base isolated steel frame.

  • As remodeling market is growing and peoples' concern on health and well-being is getting high, there is a need to apply environmentally friendly approach to remodeling an apartment houses. But, in point of the impact noise concerned, the thickness of the concrete slab and the limited ceiling height of the remodelling houses are the main constraints to improve the impact noise performance. In order to investigate the effect of the impact noise isolation as structural treatments for the structural elements, heavy-weight impact noise and tapping noise were measured in an remodeling building. As a result, structural strengthening method by H-beam was successful to enhance the impact noise level at about 3 or 4 class by the sound classification system.

  • Generally, there are laser operating equipments( aligner, stepper) and electronic microscope( SEM, TEM) as a high precision manufacturing and inspection equipment in semiconductor production companies, precision examination and measuring laboratories. Mostly, these equipments are characterized by projection and target part. The relative displacements between projection and target part are dominant roles in vibrational problem in these precision equipments. These relative displacements are determined by the position of incoming vibration and the difference of vibration response in projection and target part. In this study, the allowable vibrational limits are suggested and the vibrational reduction plans are proposed by measurement and analysis of vibration phenomenon in the Clean Room in PDP(plasma display panel) production building. The vibration performance is evaluated by comparison relative displacements between projection and target part before/after the vibration isolation plan.
