  • To achieve the best performance of a project, uncertainties involved in the building construction process need to be identified in the planning phase of the project. Uncertainties seldom create a positive impact on construction project, but they almost cause delay and increase costs. Therefore, risk management plays a significant role in construction to minimize risk occurred due to uncertainties of a project. Although the importance of the risk management has been known to the construction industry, it is not enough to be developed to meet the demands of the industry. It has not been enough for Systems to control schedule risks for managers in the field. Therefore, a tool is necessary to efficiently control risks. The propose of this study is to invent Schedule Risk Control System Module to prepare for risks in preconstruction phase.

  • The duration of a construction project is not only a key element for taking a new order, but also a strict yardstick to determine certain project successful or not. However, since construction project is basically outdoor job and most of the activities are proceeded out-air, no matter how the schedule plan has been established accurately, actual project proceeds due to the weather condition, beyond anyone's control. In this paper, the functional relationship between work productivity rate and weather elements is suggested by regression analysis. Difference of the relationship and influence of weather due to the seasonal group are also revealed. With these results, by simulating actual weather data and generating weather forecast through historical data, more accurate schedule would be obtained.

Integrating Deep Learning with Web-Based Price Analysis to Support Cost Estimation

  • Existing web-based cost databases have proved invaluable for construction cost estimating. These databases have been utilized to compute approximate cost estimates using assembly rates, unit rates, and etc. These web-based databases can be used independently with traditional cost estimation methods (manual methods) or used to support BIM-based cost estimating platforms. However, these databases are rigid, costly, and require a lot of manual inputs to reflect recent trends in prices or prices relative to a construction project's location. To address this gap, this study integrated deep learning techniques with web-based price analysis to develop a database that incorporates a project's location cost estimating standards and current cost trends in generating a cost estimate. The proposed method was tested in a case study project in Lagos, Nigeria. A cost estimate was successfully generated. Comparison of the experimental results with results using current industry standards showed that the proposed method achieved a 98.16% accuracy. The results showed that the proposed method was successful in generating approximate cost estimates irrespective of project's location.

  • Project delivery systems have evolved over the years. Continuous changes in technology and the increasing sophistication in buildings required specialization of design and construction services. IPD as a delivery method has been used in the USA and other countries. With the development of BIM, lots of construction companies have been realizing this method since BIM came out in China. However IPD are not considered with BIM, IPD will be an important role in management system of construction. This study introduced the definition of IPD and based on the flow process of IPD, compared the process in china and other countries. Through the real project and the condition in China this paper analyzed the feasibility of IPD in China.

Recognition of Stakeholders Regarding Building-Related Landscape Systems (대지의 조경 제도에 대한 관련 주체의 인식 비교 분석)

  • This study proposes the difference of awareness and improvement plan of building-related landscape systems through a cognition survey of building owners, public officials, and experts. The main results are as follows. First, all three groups are highly aware of the need to secure urban green spaces. Even if private property rights are restricted, the level of awareness that green space should be secured for public benefit is high. The level of interest in the building-related landscape system was also surveyed to a greater degree. Second, the survey respondents, including the building owner group, answered that there is a need to strengthen the building-related landscape area standards. It can be seen that there is a need to revise the relaxation of the building-related landscape area standards through an amendment of the Building Ordinance in many local governments. Third, most municipalities are not equipped with an organizational system that can promote the work of building-related landscape. It is necessary to newly hire civil servants for landscape design, maintenance, and management specialization, or to expand co-working relationships with related departments. Fourth, building owners are interested in building-related landscape, but they do not know specific management methods and leave the landscape space. The municipality needs to offer guidance on landscape architectural design and construction methods that the building owners can easily follow and to support the voluntary landscape space management on the part of the local residents by supporting the trees. Fifth, in order to improve the building-related landscape system, it is necessary to verify the effect of the building-related landscape and spread a consensus. At the government level, in order to enable building owners to recognize the value of the landscape space in connection with an urban regeneration project, it is necessary to present an example of an excellent building-related landscape installation via a pilot project.

A Study on Project Information Integrated Management Measures Using Life Cycle Information in Road Construction Projects (도로건설사업의 생애주기별 정보를 이용한 건설사업정보 통합관리방안 연구)

  • Construction projects generate a massive amount of diverse information. It takes at least five years to more than 10 years to complete, so it is important to manage the information on a project's history, including processes and costs. Furthermore, it is necessary to determine if construction projects have been carried out according to the planned goals, and to convert a construction information management system (CALS) into a virtuous cycle. It is easy to ensure integrated information management in private construction projects because constructors can take care of the whole process (from planning to completion), whereas it is difficult for public construction projects because various agencies are involved in the projects. A CALS manages the project information of public road construction, but that information is managed according to CALS subsystems, resulting in disconnected information among the subsystems, and making it impossible to monitor integrated information. Thus, this study proposes integrated information management measures to ensure comprehensive management of the information generated during the construction life cycle. To that end, a CALS is improved by standardizing and integrating the system database, integrating the individually managed user information, and connecting the system with the Dbrain tool, which collectively builds artificial intelligence, to ensure information management based on the project budget.

A Development of 3D Computer-Aided Design(CAD) Add-on Program for a Quantity Take-off through the User Needs Analysis (사용자 요구 사항 분석에 따른 물량산출 연동 프로그램 개발)

  • Since the Three Dimensional Computer Aided Design(3D CAD) appeared in 1990s, Building Information Modeling(BIM) has got the great issue in the construction project nowadays. BIM is the process of managing and generating building information during life cycle of a construction project. And information can be moved to 3D modeling flexibly in BIM. As a result, a field of estimating has also been doing researches in the calculation of the amount of building materials from 3D modeling. And the Construction Cost Estimating Software which is generally used over the world has been trying to be applied to the Construction project in Korea. But, when we consider the productivity, it is less efficient than the existing way in Korea which use the 2D Drawings when they take off the Quantity. Also, there are lots of difference how to estimate the construction cost. between Korea and the others. Because it is a bit hard to apply the software used in the other countries to the construction project in Korea, people couldn't use it well in the construction project actually. In this study, for developing the appropriate construction cost estimating software rooted in 3D in Korea, we suggest 3D CAD Add-on Program for a Quantity Take-off which can move quantitative information to 3D CAD.

  • Each participant in building construction project requires their own workspace to execute their activities. In this environment, inappropriate workspace planning in construction site causes workspace conflicts which result in a loss of productivity, safety hazard and poor-quality issues. Therefore, workspace should be regarded as one of the most important resources and constraints have to be managed at construction site. However, current construction planning techniques such as Gantt chart, network diagram and critical path method have proven to be insufficient to workspace planning. This paper contains formalized process for workspace planning in 4D BIM environment to prevent workspace related problems in construction project. The proposed process in this paper represents workspace occupation status for each activity and suitable solutions for identified workspace conflicts by integrating workspace attributes and activity execution plan. Based on the result of this study, project manager will be able to prevent probable workspace conflicts and negative effect on project performance by devising appropriate workspace plan during preconstruction phase.

A Study of the Work Efficiency in the High Altitude according to Climatic Elements (지역별 기후에 따른 고소작업가능률 산정 - 서울, 인천, 부산 지역을 중심으로 -)

  • O Having a highly reliable plan for the process and estimating an accurate construction period during the early stages of a construction project can prevent falsifying the plan and reduce the occurrence of construction delays. Moreover, it allows a succession of swift and accurate decisions to happen. The difficulty in obtaining an accurate estimate of the construction period is especially prominent in high-rise building projects because the works involved are very complicated and costly. As such, it is important that research is done to find out the impacts a reliable plan and good estimate of the construction period can bring with regards to the monthly work efficiency and success of a high-rise building project. However, due to the difference in climatic conditions at high altitude and surface level, the current way of calculating work efficiency in a typical project is inaccurate for a high-rise building project. With that, this paper aims to compute the work efficiency with height, taking into consideration the change in climatic elements at different working heights. A comparison of the results according to the climatic features of each city can also be done in this paper. According to the results calculated in work altitudes, the work efficiency in Busan falls the most. On the other hands, the work efficiency in Seoul falls the least. The reason these results are shown is the influence of wind speed at high altitude. The estimation of work efficiency at high altitude would be used for estimating construction period, feasibility studies, and selecting a city of high-rise building projects.

Resource-constrained Scheduling at Different Project Sizes

  • The resource constrained scheduling problem (RCSP) constitutes one of the most challenging problems in Project Management, as it combines multiple parameters, contradicting objectives (project completion within certain deadlines, resource allocation within resource availability margins and with reduced fluctuations), strict constraints (precedence constraints between activities), while its complexity grows with the increase in the number of activities being executed. Due to the large solution space size, this work investigates the application of Genetic Algorithms to approximate the optimal resource alolocation and obtain optimal trade-offs between different project goals. This analysis uses the cost of exceeding the daily resource availability, the cost from the day-by-day resource movement in and out of the site and the cost for using resources day-by-day, to form the objective cost function. The model is applied in different case studies: 1 project consisting of 10 activities, 4 repetitive projects consisting of 40 activities in total and 16 repetitive projects consisting of 160 activities in total, in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the algorithm in different-size solution spaces and under alternative optimization criteria by examining the quality of the solution and the required computational time. The case studies 2 & 3 have been developed by building upon the recurrence of the unit/sub-project (10 activities), meaning that the initial problem is multiplied four and sixteen times respectively. The evaluation results indicate that the proposed model can efficiently provide reliable solutions with respect to the individual goals assigned in every case study regardless of the project scale.
