  • For cities with ancient buildings at core areas, night lighting is an effective means to demonstrate their history and culture. In this regard, night scenes of these ancient buildings are evaluated from multiple aspects, such as color rendition, brightness ratio affected by ambient light and technological realization of lighting facilities. This study builds a visual evaluation system for night scenes of ancient buildings based on three dimensions, namely ancient architecture carrier performance, visual perception and technological realization, and explains specific evaluation sub-criteria one by one. In addition, this study adopts Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to analyze the impact of each sub-criteria item on the weight of the whole evaluation system, and conducts a consistency test to show that the evaluation system meets the reasonable requirements of hierarchy setting. Moreover, relative importance of each sub-criteria item may be determined based on their corresponding weights.

  • Although research and technology developments have recently increased to save lighting energy within buildings, such research and technology development are judged to be unsuitable for energy savings since they are limited in the sense that the application of the technology is fragmented. This study proposes a user and location awareness technology applied to dimming lighting control system and verified the effectiveness of energy savings by building a test bed. The results were as follows : 1) This study suggested a user and location awareness technology applied to dimming lighting control system. 2) The system shows 96.6% and 82.8% energy saving rates, respectively, on the basis of one user, compared to an on/off lighting control and the user and location awareness technology applied to on/off lighting control system. 3) The energy consumption of the user and location awareness technology applied to on/off lighting control system and the user and location awareness technology applied to dimming lighting control system increased to 96.6%, 88.3%, and 59.6% and 82.8%, 85.0%, 51.5%, respectively, on the basis of one, two, and three users, compared to the on/off lighting control system. This study confirmed the energy saving performance of the user and location awareness technology applied to the dimming lighting control system through performance evaluation. In this regard, further study needs to be undertaken to evaluate the performance at night time.

  • Buildings, energy and the environment are key issues that the building professions and energy policy makers have to address, especially in the context of sustainable development. With more tall buildings constructed in China, the impact on energy consumption and carbon emission would be great from buildings (2% increase of carbon dioxide annually between 1971 and 2004). The imperative was to investigate the building energy performance of high-rise in different climate zones and identify the key design parameters that impose significantly influence on energy performance in sustainable building design. Design implications on glazing performance, sizing of the ventilation fans, renewable energy application on high-rise building design are addressed. Combination of effective sustainable building design strategies (e.g., building envelope improvement, daylight harvesting, advanced lighting design, displacement ventilation, chilled ceiling etc.) could contribute more than 25% of the total building energy consumption compared to the international building energy code.

  • Purpose: In 2008, As the green growth policy was presented, Green Building is made any effort to propagation. In this paper, the respective technologies that are able to considerably reduce the energy demands for heating, cooling, hot-water, lighting and ventilation among the variety of technologies were selected. Method: Design factors such as (1) External insulation, (2) Triple glazing window, (3) LED lighting, (4) External venetian blind, (5) Geothermal and (6) Heat recovery ventilator were derived. In addition, energy saving effects in terms of energy demand, energy consumption and energy cost were investigated using EnergyPlus, building energy analysis tool. Result : The results were as follows. (1) It can be seen that high insulated triple glazing window, heat recovery ventilator and external insulation technology is excellent for energy demand. (2) Unlike energy demand, saving effect of energy consumption and energy cost was shown in order of Geothermal > Triple Window > Heat recovery Ventilation> Insulation> LED Lighting > EVB Blind.

  • In this age of "Information", many people consider it a deterrent to information flow to provide a hierarchy with private rooms in a modern office layout. There are others, however, who insist that visual and acoustical privacy are more important than any other design factor in achieving higher productivity. The debate may never end, but the partitioned open plan, which is a new form of the vast open plan, has merits of each concept - open and closed layout. Consequently, office design has dramatically shifted to partitioned open planning, with shorter, temporary walls or partitions, originally intended for increasing privacy and diminishing hierarchy, yet still keeping flexibility in spatial organization. The introduction of low-level partitioned spaces in an office layout, however, produces a complicated lighting design problem. Obviously, accurately predicted daylighting performance data are needed not only for daylighting design but for artificial lighting system design. Scale models of 12 sets of unit partitioned spaces are constructed and extensive scale model measurements of both daylight and reflected sunlight have been performed within an artificial sky simulator. The prototype-building interior is modeled with different partition configurations, each of which is modeled using the different envelope geometry and exterior configurations, and then the variations in interior light levels are estimated. The result indicates that partitioned spaces employed in an open plan of modern offices still offer a large potential for daylighting and energy saving as well. Much of the savings may derive from the cumulative effect of reflected sunlight. Optimal design for building envelope geometry and exterior configuration promises additional savings.

  • The secure access the lighting, Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), fire safety, and security control boxes of building facilities is the primary objective of future smart buildings. This paper proposes an authorized user access to the electrical, lighting, fire safety, and security control boxes in the smart building, by using color grid coded optical camera communication (OCC) with face recognition Technologies. The existing CCTV subsystem can be used as the face recognition security subsystem for the proposed approach. At the same time a smart device attached camera can used as an OCC receiver of color grid code for user access authentication data sent by the control boxes to proceed authorization. This proposed approach allows increasing an authorization control reliability and highly secured authentication on accessing building facility infrastructure. The result of color grid code sequence received by the unauthorized person and his face identification allows getting good results in security and gaining effectiveness of accessing building facility infrastructure. The proposed concept uses the encoded user access authentication information through control box monitor and the smart device application which detect and decode the color grid coded informations combinations and then send user through the smart building network to building management system for authentication verification in combination with the facial features that gives a high protection level. The proposed concept is implemented on testbed model and experiment results verified for the secured user authentication in real-time.

  • Currently, the energy consumption of electric lighting in an office building is accounted for more than 30% of the total energy consumption. In order to reduce the energy consumed by the indoor lighting, the daylight as a natural energy resource can play an important role in energy savings. The daylight can have positive impacts on improvement of work efficiency and productivity, and also make people feel more psychologically stable. Moreover, by using the daylight, we can definitely reduce the energy consumption in office buildings. Thus, the purpose of this study is to determine the LED dimming ratio depending on the ratio by calculating the amount of artificial illumination required according to the change of daylight by using the light simulation software that can quantify and visualize the performance of daylight. As a result, the energy savings could be obtained up to 30%.

  • This paper presents the surges response of the grounding systems using frequency domain electromagnetic field analysis software package. The frequency and time domain performance of a building grounding systems subjected to a lighting strike is described and discussed. The computed scalar potentials is presented graphically as a function of spatial coordinates. A double exponential lighting surge current is injected at one corner or the building grounding systems. Time-variant response of rod, mesh and kit grounding systems under impulse currents have been obtained. This paper deals with the results of studies on the time variation of ground resistance in three grounding systems.

  • According to the conversion of building into skyscraper, most buildings have curtain wall structures, so the shading device of building is required. The types of shading systems are a roller shade, venetian bind, and vatical blind and so on. A miler shade is mostly used among the shading systems. An experimental evaluation was verified whether there was an effect of shading materials(Perforated panel, Fabric) in each condition by an experiment with artificial lighting and daylight.
