  • This paper studies on dynamic and stability behavior of a clamped-elastically restrained nanobeam under the action of a nonconservative force with an emphasis on the influence of surface properties on divergence and flutter instability. Using the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory incorporating surface effects, a governing equation for a clamped-elastically restrained nanobeam is derived according to Hamilton's principle. The characteristic equation is obtained explicitly and the force-frequency interaction curves are displayed to show the influence of the surface effects, spring stiffness of the elastic restraint end on critical loads including divergence and flutter loads. Divergence and flutter instability transition is analyzed. Euler buckling and stability of Beck's column are some special cases of the present at macroscale.

  • Cheongdam Bridge in Seoul Metropolitan Subway Line No.7 recently constructed has 180 meters (2@90m) of expansion length of structure (distance between fixed points). Track type is all ballasted track and rail expansion joint is installed at every movable point. However, there is no expansion joint at the transition area between ballasted track ,end deck. By this reason, the rail buckling has been occurred every year and there is actually an abnormal behavior in expansion. In this study, based on the modeling of the Cheongdam Bridge, the element of interacting relationship between track and structure which is influential to track displacement in long-span bridge was analyzed and, finally, the methodology to ensure the continuous-welded rail in Cheongdam Bridge was suggested.

  • Sandwich sheet with inner structure is expected to find many applications because of high stiffness to mass ratio. However, low resistance to the compressive pressure in the thickness direction is a dominating factor in the formability of sandwich sheet. In this study, sandwich sheet with pyramid type core is considered. For the compressive characteristics in the thickness direction, experiments and finite element simulations are carried out. In the experiment, deformation behavior is observed and discussed as the compression proceeds. It is shown that a corresponding finite element simulation can give a reasonable agreement with experiment in terms of maximum pressure. However, simulation shows some discrepancy from the experiment in terms of compressive pressure-displacement characteristics. The reasons for this discrepancy are studied in the geometrical imperfectness of sandwich sheet. It is also observed that most of deformation is dominated by buckling mode of pyramid legs.

  • Prestressed composite girder bridges with concrete infilled steel tube at negative flexural moment region takes the advantages of enhancing local buckling and flexural resistances resulting from the lateral confining effect of concrete due to the interactive reaction in the interface layer of steel tube and concrete. The interface behavior in concrete infilled tube of the test composite girder is analyzed by 8-node zero thickness interface finite element combined with 3-D. elastoplastic concrete constitutive model and 3-D. elastoplastic Mindlin shell element. The interface effects between infillled concrete and steel tube are investigated through the comparision of the experimental and numerical results.

The overall deformations and lo buckling modes of tube was discussed by "plastic hinge concep Force-displacement function was plotted to show various state that depended or time. Also, mean crush load was expressed as a type of section geometry a material property using dimensional analysis. To verify the energy absorption and the effects of dimensions, The standards Wt used as related density and specific energy, mean crushing load and the resL were discussed by the relation between crush load and deformation, the relati between related density and specific energy, the relation between crush load a mean crush load, the relation between mean crush load and specific energy.ergy.

  • Effects of circumferentially local wall thinning on the fracture behavior of pipes were investigated by monotonic four-point bending. Local wall thinning was machined on the pipes in order to simulate erosion/corrosion metal loss. The configurations of the eroded area included an eroded ratio of d/t= 0.2, 0.5, 0.6, and 0.8, and an eroded length of ${\ell}\;=10mm,$ 25mm, and 120mm. Fracture type could be classified into ovalization, local buckling, and crack initiation depending on the eroded length and eroded ratio. Three-dimensional elasto-plastic analyses were also carried out using the finite element method, which is able to accurately simulate fracture behaviors excepting failure due to cracking. It was possible to predict the crack initiation point by estimating true fracture ductility under multi-axial stress conditions at the center of the thinned area.

  • This paper summarizes an experimental study on the seismic behavior of lower stories of a mid-rise reinforced concrete frame building. Two reinforced concrete frames with two stories and one span were tested and each frame represents lower two stories of an 11-story RC frame building. Both frames were designed in accordance with Japanese design guidelines and were identical except in the variation of axial force. The tests demonstrated that the overall load-displacement relations of the two frames were nearly the same and the first-story column shear was closely related to the column axial load. The columns and beams elongated during both of the tests, with the second-floor beam elongation exceeding 1.5% of the beam clear span length. The frame with higher axial loads developed more cracks that the frame under moderate axial load.

  • Steel-concrete-steel (SCS) sandwich composite wall has been proposed for building and offshore constructions. An ultra-lightweight cement composite with density1380 kg/m3 and compressive strength up to 60 MPa is used as core material and inter-locking J-hook connectors are welded on the steel face plates to achieve the composite action. This paper presents the numerical models using nonlinear finite element analysis to investigate the load displacement behavior of SCS sandwich walls subjected to axial compression. The results obtained from finite element analysis are verified against the test results to establish its accuracy in predicting load-displacement curves, maximum resistance and failure modes of the sandwich walls. The studies show that the inter-locking J-hook connectors are subjected to tension force due to the lateral expansion of cement composite core under compression. This signifies the important role of the interlocking effect of J-hook connectors in preventing tensile separation of the steel face plates so that the local buckling of steel face plates is prevented.

  • This paper investigates the effect of crumb rubber (CR) on compressive behaviour of crumb rubber concrete filled steel tube (CRCFST) stub columns. Therefore, experiments on 16 stub columns subjected to axial loading are carried out. The results show that the failure modes of CRCFST stub columns with different CR replacement ratios and CR size are similar, manifested the buckling of the outer steel tube. The axial bearing capacity and stiffness both decrease with an increase in CR replacement ratio, and with decreasing CR size.
