  • The motion of a rising liquid droplet is different that of a bubble motion. Treatment of liquid drops is more complex because internal motion must be considered. A 3D unstructured CFD code has been developed to solve incompressible N-S equation for the droplet simulation. This front-tracking consideration which the interface is tracked explicitly is very available to apply for not only exact interface topology but also the high schmidt number issue, such as $CO_2$ dissolution. This paper is forced on the zig-zag motion of the liquid droplet. The simulation shows that if the rising droplet is located at the corner of the zig-zag path, the velocity is low and shape of the droplet is more spherical shape, results in the less drag coefficient. Twin horse shoe vortexes behind the rising droplet are presented and the topology of the droplet is compared with an experimental result during one period of the path.

  • Real quality and axial void fraction distribution of subcooled refrigerant flow is very important to predict the heat transfer rate and pressure drop in the design of refrigerating system. In the subcooled boiling region, the liquid bulk temperature is still below the corresponding saturation temperature. But beyond the net vapor generation point, bubble detachment is occured actively from the vapor layer formed on the wall. A reliable method to predict the vapor fraction from the liquid bulk temperature is suggested in this paper. And also the actual quality of the subcooled R-113 flow is calculated in the range of 261-1239kg/$m^2$s mass velocity and 10-30K subcooling.

  • Recently there are many researches about single flow and two-phase flow phenomena in the mini and microchannel. But from this result the principle in the microchannel was not explained clearly. In this paper two-phase flow pattern was visualized in the micro-multi-branched-channel using a high speed camera. Microchannel was fabricated with PDMS and glass slide. The velocity profile was obtained by a Micro PIV. Then flow boiling at the near inlet area was occurred and vapor was moved in the micro-multi-branched-channel.

  • A mechanistic model based on wall-attached bubble coalescence, previously developed by the authors, was extended to predict a vow high critical heat flux (CHF)in highly subcooled flow boiling, especially for high mass flux and small tube diameter conditions. In order to take into account the enhanced condensation due to high subcooling and high mass velocity in small diameter tubes, a mechanistic approach was adopted to evaluate the non-equilibrium flow quality and void fraction in the subcooled water flow boiling, with preserving the structure of the previous CHF model. Comparison of the model predictions against highly subcooled water CHF data showed relatively good agreement over a wide range of parameters. The significance of the proposed CHF model lies in its generality in applying over the entire subcooled flow boiling regime including the operating conditions of fission and fusion reactors.

  • Based on the bubble coalescence adjacent to the heated wall as a flow structure for CHF condition, Chang and Lee developed a mechanistic critical heat flux (CHF) model for subcooled flow boiling. In this paper, improvements of Chang-Lee model are implemented with more solid theoretical bases for subcooled and low-quality flow boiling in tubes. Nedderman-Shearer's equations for the skin friction factor and universal velocity profile models are employed. Slip effect of movable bubbly layer is implemented to improve the predictability of low mass flow. Also, mechanistic subcooled flow boiling model is used to predict the flow quality and void fraction. The performance of the present model is verified using the KAIST CHF database of water in uniformly heated tubes. It is found that the present model can give a satisfactory agreement with experimental data within less than 9% RMS error.

  • A modeling of a hydraulic-gun-aerator is proposed to set up a design procedure for such devices. The aerators are used to destroy any thermal stratification that are responsible for the degradation of water qualify of lakes. The aerator produces ascending flow by using air bubbies released instantly near the bottom of the lake into a cylindrical pipe installed vertically. Differently form the diffuser-aerators, they can pull up the cold, oxygen depleted water directly to the region of the free surface, and they are believed to work effectively especially for relatively deeper lakes. Their design procedure has not been established yet though, and we propose a model focusing on the exit flow velocity at the top of the aerator through the examination of presently operating devices.

  • This study was experimentally performed to investigate sea water freezing behavior along parallel cooled plate with bubbly flow. The experiments were carried out for a variety of parameter, such as sea water velocity, air-bubble flow rate, and cooled-plate temperature. The shape of freezing layer, freezing rate and salinity of frozen layer were observed and measured. It was found that the experimental parameters gave a great influence on the freezing rate and the salinity of the frozen layer.

  • In order to design a propeller with high efficiency and excellent cavitation performance, theoretical and experimental studies on the cavitation and noise characteristics according to the blade section shape are essential. In general, sheet cavitation, bubble cavitation, and cloud cavitation are the main causes of hull vibration and propeller surface erosion. However vortex cavitation, which has the greatest influence on the noise level because the fastest CIS in ship propeller, has been researched for a long time and studies have been conducted recently to control it. In this experiment, the development process of cavitation was measured by using three dimensional wings with two different wing section and wing tip shapes, and the noise level at that time was evaluated. In addition, we evaluated the relationship between cavitation inception and hydrodynamic force using three component load cell and we measured the velocity field of wing wake using LDV.

  • In the present investigation, it has been proposed to utilize a direct contact heat exchanger as an evaporator to solve the difficulties such as scaling, corrosion and law thermal efficiencies, associated with the conventional evaporator. Liquified nitrozen was utilized as a working fluid to investigate basic natures of bubble dynamics in the evaporator, and spray nozzles were adopted to inject liquified nitrozen into the spray column with varying flow rates of dispersed phase fluids. Experimentations were carried out in the range of $6.54{\times}10^{-4}kg/s$ - 0.030 kg/s for dispersed phase flow rates with one, three and five nozzle holes. Observing the bubble dynamics for the evaporator the feasibility of utilizing a direct contact heat exchanger as a LNG evaporator has been evaluated. The results show that no eruption phenomena was observed in the present investigation with $LN_2$ and the interface between $N_2$ bubbles and water was fully turbulent. It is believed that the high injection velocity of $LN_2$ through the spray nozzles provide good mixing effects for both heat and mass transfers between water and $N_2$ bubbles. Ice was formed on the surface of the spray nozzle for higher $LN_2$ flow rates. However, even in this case, it is observed that the ice was detached as soon as it was formed. Under the present experimental conditions, the shapes of $LN_2$ bubbles were in the spherical-cap region according to the Clift, Grace and Weber Graphs. The height of foam region caused by the breakup of larger bubbles keeps increasing with high injection velocities until it reaches it's maximum height.
