DC motors have widely been used in the field of variable-speed driving system since it is easy to control flux and torque of the motors precisely but it is hard to check and maintain those periodically. In addition, there are difficulties in high power and high speed running due to rectifying limit of commutator, and are a lot of restrictions in installation. Therefore, speed control in BLDC(Brushless DC) motors have seriously been studied for a long while. In this paper, a mathematical model of BLDC motor driven by PWM inverter is developed. Dynamics and steady-state characteristics of BLDC motor are simulated and analyzed with a series of experiments for the parameter estimation : torque, speed, phase voltage and current.
A design and fabrication result of a ultra-small brushless DC motor is presented. The outer diameter of the motor is 3mm. This motor is designed to 3 phase coreless winding, and operated with synchronous type driver. The experimental results for back EMF value, static torque and speed characteristics are presented and discussed.

A new control method for robust position control of brushless dc motor is presented. The model of brushless dc motor is approximately linearized by field-orentation method, and it is shown that augmented state variable feedback can be applied to this system. In addition, robustness is obtained without any change of overall system response. Load disturbance is detected by 0-observer of unknown and inaccessible input, and is compensated by feedforward which has fast response. Overall system is controlled by using the MC68000 microprocessor, and the performance of the proposed control algorithm is verified by the results of simulation and experiment.

This paper presents fault detection scheme of Brushless DC(BLDC) motor drive system by estimating BLDC motor resistance using motor input and output data which is transmitted from data acquisition board to host computer over serial communication channel. Since communication time delay has a serious effect on performance, we use periodic and fixed communication protocol. Hence, the delay time is priory known. Simplified BLDC motor model and recursive least square algorithm is used for estimating motor resistance. By experiment result, we confirm the proposed scheme.

In this paper, we propose a brushless DC motor drive system for active knee prosthesis and low-cost estimation method for phase current from DC-link current. To control motor torque directly, current sensing is very important and current sensing point should be synchronized with voltage switching command to minimize the effect of switching noise in current measurement, For maintaining small form factor, simplifying control schemes and achieving low-cost system, control schemes using DC-link current are used. Moreover, we incorporated phase current estimation method using analog MUX for minimizing current estimation error between DC-link current and phase current. The validity of the proposed system is verified through experimental works.

In this paper, we consider feedback-kinearizing control of brushless dc motors which have been increasingly used in high-performance servo applications, We completely characterize the whole class of the feedback controllers that enable the brushless dc motors to behave like linear systems but without torque ripple. The whole class of the feedback-linearizing controllers is characterized in the explicit form which contains a function to be chosen freely. The previously known controllers correspond to either the particular ones in our whole class of the feedback-Linearzing controllers or their truncated Fourier expansions. This free function can be used to achieve other control objectives as well as linear dynamic characteristics. Furthermore, our feedback-linearizing controllers can be easily determined from the measurement data of back EMF.
A Clustering Adaptive Fuzzy Logic Controller(CAFLC) is applied to the torque control of a brushless do motor drive. Objective of this system includes elimination of torque ripple due to cogging at low speeds under loads. The CAFLC implemented has advantages of computational simplicity, and self-tuning characteristics. Simulation results showed that the torque ripple and dynamic response of the system using a CAFLC were superior to the model reference adaptive controlled system.

This paper presents a method to detect a rotor position and to drive a BLDC motor from standstill to medium speed without any position sensor comparing the current responses due to the inductance variation in the rotor position. A rotor position at a standstill is identified by the current responses of six pulses injected to each phase of a motor. Once the motor stars up pulse train that is composed of long and short pulses is injected to the phase corresponding to produce the maximum torque and the next phase continuously. it provides not only the torque but also the information of the next commutation time effectively when the response of long and short pulses crosses each other after the same time delay. This method which is verified experimentally using a DSP can drive a BLDC motor to the medium speed smoothly without any rattling and time delay compared with the conventional sensorless algorithm.

Generally, brushless DC motor(BLDCM) driving system uses hall sensors or encoders as the mechanical position or speed sensor. It is necessary to achieve the informations of rotor position for driving trapezoidal type brushless DC motor without any position sensor. In this paper, the commutation signals are obtained without the motor neutral voltage, multistage analog filters, A/D converters, or the complex digital phase shift circuits which are indispensable in the conventional sensorless control algorithms. In the proposed method, in stead of detecting the zero crossing point of the nonexcited motor back electromagnetic force for the average motor terminal to neutral voltage, the commutation signal are extracted directly from the specific average line to line voltage with low-pass filter, adder and comparators circuit. In contrast to conventional methods, the neutral voltage is not need; therefore, the commutation signals are insensitive to the common mode noise. Moreover, the complex phase shift circuit can be eliminated. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified through simulation results.

This paper proposes a generalized regression neural network (GRNN) based algorithm for data interpolation and design optimization of brushless dc (BLDC) motor. The procedure makes use of magnet length, stator slot opening and air gap length as design variables. Cogging torque and average torque are treated as performance indices. The optimal design necessitates mitigating the cogging torque and maximizing the average torque by varying design variables. The data set for interpolation and ensuing design optimisation using GRNN is obtained by modeling a standard BLDC motor using finite element analysis (FEA) tool MagNet 7.1.1. The performance indices of the standard motor obtained using FEA are validated with an experimental model and an analytical method. The optimal design is authenticated using particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm and the performance indices of the optimal design obtained using GRNN is validated using FEA. The results indicate the suitability of GRNN as an interpolation and design optimization tool for a BLDC motor.
