The objective of this study was to assess oral health status such as prevalence of dental caries, gingivitis and other combined disorder, orofacial dysfunction in patients with cerebral palsy(CP), as well as the state of tooth brushing, possibility of dental treatment. Sixty-six subjects with CP aged 9 to 37 years were included in the study. Clinical caries status(DMFT index) and other data were evaluated and statistically analyzed using SPSS program (SPSS 17.0). The results were as follows: The DMFT index and prevalence of gingivitis of study subjects were 2.82(male), 3.33(female) and 89%, respectively. DMFT index classified into four groups according to age as follows: DMFT index were 1.14(ages 6-11), 1.40(ages 12-14), 2.16(ages 15-24), 4.15(ages 25-37). In addition to the physical disorder, speech difficulty(86%), epilepsy(35%) and visual impairment(14%) were associated and the epilepsy medication was the most common medication. And orofacial dysfunction such as the eating difficulties(79%), drooling(36%), swallowing disorder(30%), breathing difficulty(15%), bruxism(30%) and snoring(33%) was shown. Most people with cerebral palsy can't brush alone and didn't use oral care adjunctive supplies. Moreover, Fifty-nine percent of them were noncooperative to dental treatment.
Purpose: The study has been undertaken on several factors that may influence on the orthodontic treatment satisfaction with the subject of male and female university students who have experience in receiving the orthodontic treatment by visiting orthodontic clinic. Methods: This study has implemented questionnaire survey for 350 male and female university students who have experience in receiving the orthodontic treatment by visiting orthodontic clinic due to the mall occlusion, From the 350 questionnaires collected, a total of 291 copies (83.1%) excluding the questionnaires that have inconclusive response or erroneous response is used as the research analysis data Results: The orthodontic treatment satisfaction is significantly higher for students in large cities and mid- to small sized cities than students in rural area, and it was higher for students with mid-economic class that students of upper class and lower class. It is shown for a student that began the orthodontic treatment from the elementary school, a student that had 5 times or more of brushing teeth for each day had significantly higher level of satisfaction that students that are not. In addition, a student that knows well of the oral hygiene management method, a student that had the fluoride application treatment during the orthodontic treatment period and a student that used the toothbrush for orthodontic service had significantly higher level of satisfaction that students that are not. Conclusion: Factors influencing on the orthodontic treatment satisfaction are very diverse and it is considered that it requires effort to improve the quality of medical service and sufficient understanding on several factors to improve the orthodontic treatment satisfaction for patients as well as the encouragement for orthodontic treatment patients of the relevant people in orthodontic clinics that provide the orthodontic clinic service.
This study was performed to estimate the effect of plaque control on the progress of the repair pattern of the alveolar bone surface after bone surgery. In this experiment six mongrel dogs were used, four of them were as experimental group and others were as control. In the case of experimental group, dental floss ligature was tied over the neck of crown for permiting of plaque accumulation during one week before surgery and oral hygiene procedures were not performed. In control group, all the surgical intervention was done as same procedure with experimental except oral hygiene program. After surgery plaque was controlled during one week with using the chlorhexidine brushing. Animals were sacrificed at 1,2,4,6 weeks after osseous surgery. The results were as follows : 1. The alveolar bone defects were covered with regenerated epithelium at one week, matrix change of granulation tissue on subcutaneous area was observed, and new bone formation was initiated from the surface of the bone defects. 2. The connective tissue arrangement revealed more dense, new bone formation by osteoblasts was active at 2 weeks and proliferation of gingival epithelium and alveolar bone tissue were evident at 4 weeks, and almostly recovered to normal condition at 6 weeks. 3. In experimental group, inflammatory reaction was persistent in early stage and bone repair was delayed compared to control group. 4. In control group, matrix change of granulation tissue was initiated from one week, regeneration of gingival epithelium and maturation of subcutaneous conective tissue and new bone formation were evident at 2 weeks, so almost normal bone regeneration was observed at 4,6 weeks.
A non-carious cervical lesion(NCCL) is the loss of tooth structure at the cementoenamel junction level that is unrelated to dental caries. This study was to evaluate the occlusal and periodontal status of teeth with non-carious cervical lesions. We evaluated 105 teeth with non-carious cervical lesions in 35 subjects aged 38-75 years and characterized them based on the shape and dimension, plaque retention, bleeding on probing(BOP), probing pocket depth(PPD), occlusal status, brushing type, hypersensitivity and wear facet. The results of this study were as follows 1. No significant association was observed between cervical lesions and occlusal contact in lateral excursions. 2. No significant difference occurred in plaque retention, PPD, BOP between teeth with and without cervical lesions. 3. Test teeth had a significantly higher percentage of hypersensitivity and occlusal wear facet than teeth without cervical lesions. 4. Wedge shaped lesions had a significantly higher percentage of plaque than saucer shaped lesions. 5. Teeth with plaque were found to have significantly deeper PPD than teeth without plaque retention in cervical regions. 6. Teeth with occlusal contacts were found to have significantly deeper PPD than teeth without occlusal contacts. 7. No significant association was observed between cervical lesions and PPD independent of plaque retention and occlusal contacts Although more knowledge is necessary, our results suggest that occlusal contact and bacterial plaque may influence on periodontal tissue, but NCCL is not directly associated with periodontal health

Lowe syndrome, also known as oculocerebrorenal syndrome, is a rare genetic disorder involving eyes, kidney, brain and musculoskeletal system, and occurs predominantly in males. The patient with Lowe syndrome is characterized with congenital cataracts, glaucoma, prominent forehead, thin and sparse hair, mental and growth retardation, muscular hypotonia, renal dysfunction, and metabolic bone disease. We have experienced a 10-year-old boy with Lowe syndrome who had poor oral hygiene and trouble for teeth brushing. To manage his behavior and systemic metabolic disorder, sedation was performed during dental care. Excessive calculus formation in this patient is caused by both medication and lack of ability to maintain oral hygiene. The dental management of those patients has to be focused on prevention due to difficulties in dental treatment and dangers of general anesthesia for the Lowe syndrome.
The study surveyed 1,127 mothers whose children aged 3 to 5 went to 25 randomly selected kindergartens, which were located in Busan Metropolitan City and the adjacent Gimhae City, and analyzed the preventive health behaviors on their children and the condition of home health education on their children. As the compulsory kindergarten education will e to be implemented within 4 years, this study aimed to draw up the rudimentary material for health education at kindergartens. The study results are summed up as follows: 1. Mothers' awareness of health-related attitude and behavioral level for their children at kindergarten: 1) The general health condition of the children, which mothers are aware of, was that they were healthy on the whole. As their children becomes older, the income level of the parents is lower, and mothers have lower level of educational standard, the health condition of the children was found a little lower. 2) In terms of mothers' recognition of the practice level of preventive health behaviors, the items such as going to bed regularly, washing hands and feet well, and having meals regularly were high in the practice level, while exercise and tooth-brushing were not practiced well. 2. The condition of mothers' health education of their children: 1) It was found that washing hands and feet, restriction of overeating and preference for specific kinds of food, guidance on regular sleep and regular meal were practiced well among items of home health education targeting kindergarten children. 2) Mothers have obtained information on family health from printed matter such as newspaper or magazine rather than the visual media. 3) From the cross analysis of mothers' health education on children and children's health behaviors, as the standard of education of mothers was higher, so was the level of preventive health behaviors of children. 3. From the result of multi regression analysis of the factors influencing the preventive hygiene of kindergarten children, it was found that as the home health education level was higher, so was the health behavior of children. On the other hand, as the mothers were older, the health behavior of children became lower.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the experience and perception of sexual harassment during the clinical practice among nursing students and to identify the relationship between these variables and self-esteem. Methods: Participants included 191 senior nursing students who voluntarily participated. Sexual harassment experiences and perceptions were measured using the tools developed by the researcher. Self-esteem was measured using self-esteem inventory developed by Rogenberg. Results: 50.8% of the participants experienced sexual harassment. Physical harassment was the most common, followed by verbal, visual and gender-role related sexual harassment. 'Blocking the way' and 'Brushing one's body on purpose' were the most common behaviors. The perception of sexual harassment severity was 3.35 out of 5 points. There were negative correlation between sexual harassment experience and self-esteem (r=-.17, p=.013). The subjects who experienced sexual harassment showed lower self-esteem score than those who did not (t=-2.10, p=.037). The main offender was a male patient in 40s, and the psychiatric ward was the most vulnerable to sexual harassment. Conclusion: Results showed that sexual harassment in clinical practice among nursing students were serious. It is necessary to develop an educational program to prepare them for sexual harassment in clinical practice.
The purpose of this study was to examine association between oral health status and perceived general health symptom. We analyzed 14,231 subjects who participated in Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2007~2009). All individuals were examined by a questionnaire about socioeconomic history, smoking and drinking habit, the frequency of daily tooth brushing, the presence of regular dental visit, and EuroQol-5D. Dental survey was conducted to find the decayed, missing, and filled teeth (DMFT) index and community periodontal index. Subjects with perceived problem with mobility had higher DMFT index (odds ratio, 1.18, p<0.001). Subjects with with perceived problem with pain/discomfort had higher DMFT index (odds ratio, 1.16, p<0.001). Self-rating general health symptom was not associated with periodontitis (p>0.05). Perceived general health was associated with DMFT index. It is recommendable that we can use the perceived general health to predict oral health status.
Background: Smartphones are a modern necessity. While they are convenient to use, smartphones also have side effects such as addiction. This study assessed the relationship between smartphone use, a part of everyday life in modern society, and oral health. Methods: An analysis was conducted using 2017 Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey data. The propensity score estimation algorithm used logistic regression and 1:1 matching algorithm using nearest-neighbor matching. After matching, a total of 15,032 participants were classified into two groups containing 7,516 teenagers each who did and did not use smartphones, respectively. Results: Comparison of oral health behaviors according to smartphone use revealed a statistically significant difference in the frequency of tooth brushing per day, use of oral hygiene products, intake of foods harmful to oral health, and experience of oral health education (p<0.05). The factors affecting oral pain experience of adolescents were examined. Compared to male participants, female participants had an odds ratio of 1.627 for oral pain (p<0.05). According to the household income level, compared to the group with higher income, the group with lower income showed higher oral pain experience (p<0.05). Oral pain experience was 1.601 times more frequent among teenagers using smartphones (p<0.05). Conclusion: The results of this study indicated that use of smartphones by adolescents affected their oral health. These findings indicate the need for improved oral health management through the use of effective school oral health programs and individual counseling by oral health professionals, promotion of information dissemination through public media, and development of prevention strategies.
