General characteristics included gender, types of schools, economic condition, and residential types. Oral health behaviors included subjective oral health condition, frequency of tooth brushing, tooth brushing after meal within recent 7 days, sealant within 12 months, fluoride application within 12 months, scaling within 12 months, and oral health education experience within 12 months. Oral health condition included dental caries incidence within 12 months. Results: Oral health behavior influenced on dental caries in the middle and high school students in Korea. This study showed the relationship between the sociodemographic characteristics, tooth brushing frequency, sealant experience, dental caries and halitosis experience, and scaling within 12 months. Scaling is the best prevention method for dental caries and halitosis in the students. Conclusions: The study showed the necessity for practical oral health education and the effect of fluoride application for dental caries prevention.
Objectives: The aim of the study is to investigate the health belief model affecting the oral health behavior in middle and high school students. Methods: The subjects were 296 middle and high school students in Seoul, Gyeonggi and Incheon from February 15 to March 21, 2014. The students filled out the self-reported questionnaires after receiving informed consents. The instrument was adopted and revised from those of Kim & Hwang, and Choi & Joo. The questionnaire consisted of 4 questions of general characteristics, 9 questions of oral health status including subjective oral health status, frequency of tooth brushing, duration of tooth brushing, method of tooth brushing, use of oral health devices, dental clinic visit, scaling services, snack intake, and smoking. The oral health belief consisted of 25 questions including susceptibility, seriousness, barriers, benefit, and self-efficacy using Likert 5 scale. The reliability of Cronbach's alpha in the study was 0.725. Data were analyzed using SPSS ver 18.0 for frequency analysis, t-test, ANOVA, ${\chi}^2$-test, and Pearson's correlation coefficient, simple regression, and binary logistic regression. Results: Oral health beliefs of middle and high school students affected the oral health behaviors. Susceptibility, barriers and self-efficacy also influenced on the oral health behaviors. In order to provide the best oral health education, susceptibility and self-efficacy are the primary factors to increase motivation because the motivation endows the students with correction of oral health behaviors that improve the knowledge, attitudes, and decrease barriers in oral hygiene. Conclusions: It is important to correct oral health behaviors in the middle and high school students by providing the continuing and systematic oral health education.
340 nm UV radiation of $2500\;kJ/m^2$ irradiated a thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) specimen used for interior and exterior materials of a car. After the UV irradiation, the black sample surface was changed to gray. Materials on the aged sample were collected and analyzed using GC/MS, but significant materials were not found. Lots of small cracks were found on the aged specimen surface. Whitening phenomenon of the aged sample disappeared by brushing or searing with a fire on the aged surface. After brushing or searing with a fire, small cracks on the surface vanished. Samples before and after the aging, and the treated samples with brush or fire were analyzed using image analyzer, SEM, EDX, and ATR and the results were compared. The vanished whitening phenomenon by brushing or searing was explained with filling the small cracks by polypropylene of TPE.

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the occurrence rate of bacteremia following toothbrushing with toothpastes composed of several antibacterial agents and compare the results with the conventional oral hygiene maintaining methods in orthodontic patients. Methods: This clinical study included 100 adult orthodontic patients who were divided into 4 groups. Each group comprised of 25 patients, wearing fixed orthodontic appliances. In the first group, bacteremia was assessed after toothbrushing without using any toothpaste. In the second group, a 0.2% chlorhexidine gluconate mouthrinse was used before brushing with no toothpaste. In the third group, subjects brushed with a commonly used toothpaste which did not include an additional antimicrobial agent. The fourth experimental group used toothpaste which included tea tree oil, clove oil, peppermint oil and bisabolol as antimicrobial elements. Pre- and post-brushing blood samples were obtained using a strict aseptic technique. All samples were microbiologically evaluated using blood culture bottles. Results: Toothbrushing in orthodontic patients yielded to an increase in the occurrence rate of bacteremia when using normal toothpaste or no toothpaste at all. Conclusions: The use of chlorhexidine mouthwash before toothbrushing, and brushing with antimicrobial toothpaste did not show a statistically significant difference in preventing the occurrence of bacteremia (p > 0.05).
The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical efficacy of mouthrinses prepared by sterilized water-generating $device(Purister^{(R)})$ on the control of gingivitis and incipient periodontitis when it was used as a adjunctives to the mechanical plaque control. 40 healthy patients with gingivitis or incipient periodontitis were divided into two groups. Patients in the experimental group use mouthrinses prepared by sterilized water-generating $device(Purister^{(R)})$ after tooth brushing while patients in the control group do only tooth brushing for plaque control. All patients received scaling and tooth brushing instruction. 1 week after scaling was set as baseline. Probing pocket depth, clinical attachment level, and bleeding on probing were scored at baseline, 4 weeks. Gingival index and plaque index were scored at baseline, 2 weeks, and 4 weeks. The results were as follows: 1. In the experimental group, gingival index, plaque index, probing pocket depth, and clinical attachment level showed statistically significant decrease, but in the control group, significant increase(p<0.05). 2. There was no significant difference between the experimental and the control group in bleeding on probing, but significant decrease in the experimental group and Significant increase in the control group In a time-dependent manner(p <0.05). From these results, it can be concluded that regular use of mouthrinses prepared by sterilized water-generating $device(Purister^{(R)})$ as adjunctives of mechanical plaque control, may be effective to prevent and treat gingivitis and incipient periodontitis.
Purpose: Diabetes and periodontal disease are two common diseases with high prevalence rates. Recent evidence has shown a bidirectional relationship between diabetes and periodontitis. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of nonsurgical periodontal therapy on glycemic control in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients. Methods: Sixty subjects aged 35-45 years with blood sugar controlled by oral hypoglycaemic agents were randomly divided equally among 3 groups: group A (scaling, mouthwash, and brushing), group B (mouthwash and brushing), and group C (brushing only). Glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c), fasting blood sugar (FBS), probing pocket depth (PPD), gingival index (GI), plaque index (PI), and the relevant drug history were recorded at baseline and after 3 months of intervention. Comparison of the mean difference among the variables was performed by parametric and nonparametric tests, which were further evaluated using multiple regression analysis. Results: The mean differences between the PPD, FBS, HbA1c, GI, and PI in groups A and B were found to be statistically significant (P<0.001). Multiple regression analysis in group A showed that out of all the independent variables, GI and frequency of drug administration independently (b=0.3761 and b=0.598) showed a significantly greater impact on HbA1c ($R^2$=0.832, P<0.05). Conclusions: Nonsurgical periodontal therapy can effectively decrease HbA1c levels in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients on medication.
