  • This study was carried out to get information for diversifying of resistant genes to bacterial blight (BB) in Japonica cultivar breeding programs. TWo hundred nine rice varieties were tested for qualitive resistance to four races of BB; HB9101 isolate for race K1, HB9102 isolate for race K2, HB9103 isolate for race K3, and HB01001 isolate for race K3a. Two hundred nine rice varieties were divided into five groups according to their race reaction. Fourteen Tongil-type varieties and ninetyseven Japonica varieties showed susceptible reaction to four races; Kl, K2, K3 and K3a. Thirteen Tongil-type varieties and thirty-one Japonica varieties were resistant to only one race; K1. Nine Tongil-type varieties and one Japonica variety were resistant to two races; K1 and K2. One Tongil-type variety and twenty-eight Japonica varieties were resistant to the three races; K1, K2, and K3. Fourteen Tongil-type varieties and one Japonica variety were resistant to four races; K1, K2, K3, and K3a. A number of Tongil-type varieties showed broad spectrum resistance to four races, while a number of Japonica varieties showed broad spectrum resistance to three races; K1, K2, and K3.

  • Abiotic and biotic stresses have been a serious threat to crop growth and productivity in the agricultural system. In this study, four strains (HS1, H30-3, KJ40, and BC42), which have biological activities related to disease suppression or alleviation of salinity and drought stresses, were tested for broad-spectrum biocontrol activity against anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum orbiculare, a bacterial fruit blotch caused by Acidovorax citrulli, and Fusarium wilt caused by Fusarium oxysporum in cucumber plants. As a result of test, when the four strains were drenched into the soil, anthracnose in cucumber leaves significantly decrease; strain KJ40 suppressed disease incidence by A. citrulli; strain BC42 significantly reduced bacterial fruit blotch and Fusarium wilt compared to control. Therefore, strain KJ40 could be a biocontrol candidate for controlling anthracnose through induced systemic resistance and the disease caused by A. citrulli as well as alleviating drought stress; strain BC42 has broad-spectrum biocontrol activity against anthracnose, Fusarium wilt, and bacterial fruit blotch.

  • Ultrasonic absorption spectrum in bovine serum albumin aqueous solutions have been measured at $20^{\circ}C$ over the broad frequency range $0.2{\sim}1,000\;MHz$ at pH 7. The absorption spectrum observed at neutral pH was successfully analyzed with the distribution of relaxation time assuming a mirror-image curve of the Davidson-Cole function. This distribution function suggests that hydration of BSA molecules is responsible for the absorption.

  • In this study, it has been developed the program for predicting the noise spectrum of axial flow fan. The radiated acoustic pressure is expressed the discrete frequency noise peaks at BPF(Blade passage frequency) and its harmonics by Wu's method and the line spectrum at the broad band by Wright's method. And this paper presents the characteristics of a fan noise due to modify the design parameters. Accordingly, it is obtained the design parameter values for noise reduction of fan.

  • During the screening of antifungal antibiotics from microbial metabolites, we selected Pseudomonas aeruginosa KGM-100 showing powerful antagonistic activity against various phytopathogenic fungi. Antibiotics KGM-100A and KGM-100B were purified from the culture broth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa KGM-100 by diaion HP-20 column chromatography, ethyl acetate extraction, silica gel column chromatography, preparative TLC and recrystallization. KGM-100A which was recrystallized in MeOH showed antimicrobial activities against a broad spectrum of fungi and bacteria. Physico-chemical properties of KGM-100A were determined and identified to be phenazine-l-carboxylic acid by UV, IR, $^{1}$H-NMR, $^{13}$C-NMR, mass spectrum, and elemental analyses.

  • S- Adenosylhomocysteine hydrolase $(SAH)^1$ catalyzes the hydrolysis of S-adenosylhomocysteine to adenosine and L-homocysteine. Inhibition of this enzyme accumulates S-adenosylhomocysteine, which in turn inhibits S-adenosyl-L-methionine dependent transmethylation, resulting in no formation of the capped methylated structure at the 5'-terminus of viral mRNA. Thus, S-adenosylhomocysteine hydrolase has been an attractive target for the development of broad spectrum of antiviral agents. (omitted)

  • This paper suggests the noise reduction method of the engine cooling fan. It was estimated the fannoise contribution at the engine room and identified the noise source at the rotating fan by sound intensity method, first. And it has been developed the program for predicting the noise spectrum of axial flow fan. The radiated acoustic pressure is expressed the discrete frequency noise peaks at BPF and its harmonics and the line spectrum at the broad band by the noise generation mechanisms. In this paper it is shown that the comparison of the measuted and calculaed noise spectra of fn for the validation of the noise predictiong program. And this paper presents the characteristics of a fan noise due to modify the design parameters. Accordingly, it was obtained the design parameter values for noise reduction of fan.

  • In this paper we studied the reduced subjective timbre space of time-varying tones as well as steady state tones. 45 modified test tones were constructed from the original violin tone in consideration of 4 physical factors: spectrum envelope, inharmonicity, time-varying spectrum and time reversal. The semantic differential (SD) method was used in the listening test. According to the factor analysis, the adjectives can be factorized into 4 groups. The first factor is characterized by the adjectives, 'free', 'broad', 'deep', 'rich', 'strong' and 'reverberant', the second by 'tenor', 'clear', 'bright', 'light' and 'sharp', the third by 'easy', 'smooth', and 'solid', the fourth by 'warm' and 'full'. The first factor, 'richness', seems to be dependent upon the time-varying characteristic of a tone. The second factor, 'sharpness', is shown to play an important role in a time-varying tone as well as in a steady state tone.

  • The spectral and photophysical properties of trans-1-pyrazinyl-2-(3-quinolinyl)ethylene (trans-3- PyQE) are investigated under various conditions in order to obtain information on ground and excited states. The absorption spectrum of trans-3-PyQE changes slightly with varying degree of solvent polarity ; the. fluorescence spectrum is shifted to the red and becomes broad and structureless as the solvent polarity increases. The fluorescence quantum yield increases with increasing solvent polarity. The fluorescence intensity of trans-3-PyQE decreases as the concentration of methyl iodide increases. The fluorescence spectra of trans-3-PyQE changes markedly upon the variation of the excitation wavelength, presumably due to an equilibrium between conformers originating from the rotation of a quasi-single bond between the quinolinyl group and ethylenic carbon atom. These results indicate that the spectral and photophysical properties of trans-3-PyQE are strongly influenced by solvent, heavy atom, and an equilibrium between conformers

  • Although most of observed properties of giant radio relics detected in the outskirts of galaxy clusters could be explained by relativistic electrons accelerated at merger-driven shocks, a few significant puzzles remain. In some relics the shock Mach number inferred from X-ray observations is smaller than that estimated from radio spectral index. Such a discrepancy could be understood, if either the shock Mach number is nder-estimated in X-ray observation due to projection effects, or if pre-existing electrons with a flat spectrum are re-accelerated by a weak shock, retaining the flat spectral form. In this study, we explore these two scenarios by comparing the results of shock acceleration simulations with observed features of the so-called Toothbrush relic in the merging cluster 1RXS J060303.3. We find that both models could reproduce reasonably well the observed radio flux and spectral index profiles and the integrated radio spectrum. Either way, the broad transverse relic profile requires additional post shock electron acceleration by downstream turbulence.
