Seismic Performance Evaluation of Moderate Seismically Designed RC Bridge Piers with Confinement Steel Type (중저진 철근 콘크리트 교각의 횡방향 철근 배근 형태에 따른 내진성능 평가)

  • Lap splice in plastic hinge region is inevitable because of due to constructional joint between footing and column. R/C Circular columns with lap-splice in plastic hinge region are widely used in Korean highway bridges. In addition, these columns which constructed before the seismic design code have a number of structural deficiencies. It is, however, believed that there are not many experimental research works for nonlinear behavior of these columns subjected to earthquake motions. The object of this research is to evaluate the seismic performance of existing circular reinforced concrete bridge piers by the Quasi-static test. Existing reinforced concrete bridge piers were moderate seismically designed in accordance with the conventional provisions of Korea Highway Design Specification. This study has been performed to verify the effect of lap spliced longitudinal steel, confinement steel type and confinement steel ratio far the seismic behavior of reinforced concrete bridge piers. Quasi-static test has been done to investigate the physical seismic performance of RC bridge piers, such as displacement ductility, energy absorption, strength degradation etc.

  • This research aims at evaluating the seismic performance of the existing R/C bridge piers which were nonseismically or seismically designed in accordance with the provision of Korea Highway Design Specification.   • This study was conducted to investigate the seismic behavior assessment of circular reinforcement concrete bridge piers particularly with regard to assessing the displacement ductility curvature ductility response modification factor(R) and plastic hinge region etc, The experimental variables of bridge piers test consisted of transverse steel details amount and spacing different axial load levels etc. The test results indicated that reinforcement concrete bridge piers with confinement steel by the code specification exhibited suffcient ductile behavior and seismic performance. Also it is found that current seismic design code specification of confinement steel requirements may be revised.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the seismic behavior assessment of circlular-tied bridge piers, particularly with regard to assessing the displacement ductility. The experimental variables of bridge piers test consisted of transverse steel details, amount and spacing different axial load levels etc. The test results indicated that reinforcement concrete bridge piers with confinement steel by the code specification exhibited sufficient ductile behavior and seismic performance.   • The past bridge design specifications of Korea didn't include 1imitation on the amount of lap splices in the plastic hinge zone of piers, and so do current specifications. But these specifications include just limitation on the minimal length of lap splices. Thus, a large majority of non-seismically designed bridge piers may have lap splices in plastic hinge zone. In this study, model pier was selected among existent bridge piers whose failure mode is complex shear-flexure mode. Full scaled RC pier models whose aspect ratio is about 2.67 were constructed and quasi static test according to the drift level history was implemented. From the test results, effect of the lap splices on the seismic performance of bridges piers was analyzed, and the seismic capacity of the model bridges was evaluated by capacity spectrum method.

  • The past Korean Bridge Design Specifications have no limitation on the amount of lap splices of longitudinal bars in the plastic hinge zone of piers. A majority of bridge piers which have been non-seismically designed might have some lap splices in plastic hinge zone. Also a number of those piers in Korea have a low aspect ratio(height/section area). So, some problems such as low ductility behavior may happen. In this study, the real pier which was non-seismically designed and has a low aspect ratio was selected for the quasi-static tests. Two groups of full scaled RC pier models of which aspect ratios are about 2.26 and about 2.67 were fabricated. And then, quasi-static tests according to the drift level history method were implemented. From the test results, the failure of these test specimens have been shown in the complex shear-flexural or shear modes. The low aspect ratio and the lap splice have largely influenced on the seismic performance of bridge piers.

  • This paper presents a nonlinear finite element analysis procedure for the seismic performance assessment of reinforced concrete bridge piers using damage indices. The accuracy and objectivity of the assessment process may be enhanced by the use of sophisticated nonlinear finite element analysis program. A computer program, named RCAHEST(Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures was used. Damage indices aim to provide a means of quantifying numerically the damage reinforced concrete bridge piers sustained under earthquake loading. The proposed numerical method for the seismic performance assessment of reinforced concrete bridge piers is verified by comparison with the reliable experimental results.
