  • The word "soundscape" proposed by Canadian composer R. Murray Schafer is now became very popular. So various soundscape design based on soundscape idea are carried on worldwide for acoustic ecology. Also in Korea, several soundscape design were made for the public spaces such as river, park and bridge but, basic concept behind soundscape design was not reflected and studied sufficiently. In that sense, this study aims to arrange the concept of soundscape design process and to review the design proposals of Gwangju River. In this process, the reproduction concept of soundscape, natural sound, light with sound, cultural and historical sound and etc. were classified and the final design was proposed to recover the natural environment and harmonize the sound with surroundings as creative soundscape.

  • The aim of the paper is to design the PLS(Plasma Lighting System) driving inverter circuit with optimal efficiency. In general, it is known that the PLS driven by a pulse has a higher light-conversion efficiency. There are the Class-E type resonant inverter and the semi-bridge inverter as a circuit which can make a pulse with low duty ratio. In this paper, we analyze the losses of the above two circuits. To verify the loss analysis, the inverter circuit with 220V 380W input consumption is manufactured and tested. Throughout the experimental results, the high efficiency PLS system has confirmed.

  • A bidirectional DC-DC converter (BDC) is an indispensable electrical unit for the electric vehicles (EVs). High efficiency, high power density, isolation, light weight and reliability are all essential requirements for BDC. In this paper, a 3 kW BDC for the battery charger of EVs is proposed. The proposed converter consists of a half-bridge structure on the primary side and an isolation transformer and a synchronous rectifier structure on the secondary side. With this topology, minimum number of switching devices are required for bidirectional power flow between the two dc buses of EVs. The easy implementation of the synchronous rectification gives advantages in terms of efficiency, cost and flexibility. The proposed BDC achieves high efficiency when operating in both modes (step-up and step-down). A 3 kW prototype is implemented to verify theoretical analysis and the performance of the proposed converter.

  • This essay examines the significance of Yank's struggle to belong in Eugene O'Neill's play, The Hairy Ape in light of Nietzsche's definition of man as "a rope tied between beast and overman." Contending that Yank's death in the gorilla's cage signifies both a defeat and his only chance of success, the essay investigates how his "tink[ing]" leads him to question his former understanding of what it means to belong. Knowing his struggle to belong is bound to fail, Yank uncompromisingly seeks to fit into the point of completely isolating himself from all other species in the gorilla's cage. Consequently, he becomes "the Hairy Ape" and opens up the possibility of belonging by creating and becoming the species of one to which he alone belongs. Echoing Nietzsche's vision of greatness in man, Yank's endeavor proves that what is noble "in man is that he is a bridge" rather than "a goal."

  • Hα jets of cool chromospheric plasma are protruding into the solar corona 10-100 Mm above the photosphere. The driving mechanisms of Hα jets have been widely studied for decades. However, the detailed process is still elusive. We observed shock signatures moving along a dark jet using 1.6 meter Goode Solar Telescope at Big Bear Solar Observatory. The first shock front of the jet shows sharp --- when it moves upward, while fuzzy and granulated when it moves downward. The jet itself extends upward when the second shock front of the jet reaches the top of the jet. We find abrupt EUV brightenings when the second shock front collides with the edge of the jet. The third front and the fouth front quasi-periodically. These phenomena might be the signs of the rebound shock waves triggered by p-mode wave leakages at the bottom of the jets. Our observation suggests that the jet can be triggered by the rebound shock waves generated by the p-mode waves leaked at the bottom of the jets.

  • Purpose - This study investigates the impact of equity financing on the valuation of R&D investments using a sample of firms from 33 countries from 1997 to 2018. Design/methodology/approach - I use a modified version of the valuation regression widely used in the literature. Findings - I find evidence that R&D investments are more highly valued when financed through equity. In contrast, debt financing does not affect the valuation of R&D investments. I also document that the impact of equity financing on R&D investment valuation weakens during the financial crisis. Research implications or Originality - In light of the distinctive characteristics of innovative investment, previous research investigates its relationship with financing. What remains unexamined, however, is how financing choices impact the way investors value innovative investments. This study seeks to bridge this gap in the existing body of research using a sample of firms from 33 countries from 1997 to 2018, for 22 years.

  • This paper presents the design of acoustic resonance(AR) free and dimmable electronic ballast for 1kW Metal-Halide Lamp(MHL). The proposed Ballast consists of a Full-Bridge(FB) rectifier, a passive power factor correction(PFC) circuit, a full-bridge inverter, an ignitor using LC resonance and a control circuit for frequency modulation and dimming control. Whereas a passive PFC provides advantages in terms of high reliability and low cost for constructing the circuit, it is difficult to supply a stable voltage because of the output voltage ripple that occurs with a period of 120Hz. Although the ballast can be designed with a small size and a light weight if it is driven at a switching frequency between 1 and 100 kHz, AR will occur if the eigenvalue frequency of the lamp coincides with the inverter's operation frequency. The operation frequency was modulated in real time according to the output voltage ripple to compensate for the variation in power supplied to the lamp and eliminate AR. For dimming, the method, which modulated drive frequency of FB inverter using the control of DC level by microprocessor, was used. The Dimming ranged at least from 600W to 1kw as rated power of the lamp with 4 stages. Performance of the proposed technique was validated through numerical analysis, computer simulation using Pspice and by applying it to an electronic ballast for a prototype 1kW MHL.

  • A comparative research on the traditional standard wood walls and other light-frame wood walls is necessary to expand the base of wooden buildings and improve consumer satisfaction. Therefore, in this research we looked for new possibilities through comparison of performance between standard wood wall and newly presented staggered stud wood wall. First, the strength characteristics of staggered stud wood walls were evaluated and the those of standard wood walls were compared. The ultimate load of the standard wall was larger than that of the staggered stud wood wall, because the cross section of the wood making up the standard wood wall was larger than that of the staggered stud wood wall. However, the statistical analysis between the two groups didn't showed a significance of 95% confidence level. This means that, staggered stud wood walls have shown the possibility of replacing the standard wood wall. Because the cross-section of the stud in the staggered stud wood walls is smaller than that of the standard wall, the material can be saved. Therefore, staggerd wood stud wall is judged to be more economical than the standard wall. In addition, since the area of the insulation also increases, improvement of the heat bridge is also expected.
