  • This paper proposes a new lossless snubber circuit on power supply for welding machine's output rectification diode. To improve the common inverter control type power supplies' problems that energy loss and heating in the snubber circuit because the output capacity makes too big heat energy in the circuit when the output current of the inverter is rectified by the diode bridge circuit, which includes the snubber circuit. This paper suggested new snubber circuit have increased power factor and confidence of output by being regenerate thus lost energy to input node.

  • In this paper, wireless health monitoring of stay cables using piezoelectric strain sensors and a smart skin technique is presented. For the cables, tension forces are estimated to examine their health status from vibration features with consideration of temperature effects. The following approaches are implemented to achieve the objective. Firstly, the tension force estimation utilizing the piezoelectric sensor-embedded smart skin is presented. A temperature correlation model to recalculate the tension force at a temperature of interest is designed by correlating the change in cable's dynamic features and temperature variation. Secondly, the wireless health monitoring system for stay cables is described. A piezoelectric strain sensor node and a tension force monitoring software which is embedded in the sensor are designed. Finally, the feasibility of the proposed monitoring technique is evaluated on stay cables of the Hwamyung Grand Bridge in Busan, Korea.

  • The wireless sensor network consists of a number of sensor nodes which have physical constraints. Each sensor node senses surrounding environments and sends the sensed information to Sink. In order to alleviate the inherent vulnerability in security of the wireless sensor nodes with the hardware constraints, the lightweight security protocol is needed and a variety of research is ongoing. In this paper, we propose a non-hierarchical sensor network and a security protocol that is suitable for monitoring man-made objects such as bridges. This paper, furthermore, explores a two-layer authentication, key distribution scheme which distributes the key and location of a sensor node in advance, and an effective security routing protocol which can take advantage of the Sleep and Awake state. This also results in the increased data transfer rate by increasing the number of alternative routing paths and the reduced energy consumption rate.

  • Node layout optimization of structural wireless systems is investigated as a means to prolong the network lifetime without, if possible, compromising information quality of the measurement data. The trade-off between these antagonistic objectives is studied within a multi-objective layout optimization framework. A Genetic Algorithm is adopted to obtain a set of Pareto-optimal solutions from which the end user can select the final layout. The information quality of the measurement data collected from a heterogeneous WSN is quantified from the placement quality indicators of strain and acceleration sensors. The network lifetime or equivalently the network energy consumption is estimated through WSN simulation that provides realistic results by capturing the dynamics of the wireless communication protocols. A layout optimization study of a monitoring system on the Great Belt Bridge is conducted to evaluate the proposed approach. The placement quality of strain gauges and accelerometers is obtained as a ratio of the Modal Clarity Index and Mode Shape Expansion values that are computed from a Finite Element model of the monitored bridge. To estimate the energy consumption of the WSN platform in a realistic scenario, we use a discrete-event simulator with stochastic communication models. Finally, we compare the optimization results with those obtained in a previous work where the network energy consumption is obtained via deterministic communication models.

  • Communication in wireless sensor networks comprising a plurality of sensor nodes located in an ad hoc environment is unidirectional in that data gathered by sensor nodes are transmitted to a sink node and not vice versa. In those networks, it is not possible for a server or a gateway to send commands to the sensor nodes to determine whether some previously received data are valid when the data indicate unusual conditions, which makes it difficult to make appropriate reactions to the unusual situations. This paper proposes and implements a TDMA-based sensor network communication protocol named BiWSLP(Bidirectional Wireless Sensor Line Protocol) supporting bidirectional communication capability. The BiWSLP is an extension of the WSLP, a unidirectional sensor network communication protocol based on the TDMA protocol. To test the feasibility of the proposed BiWSLP, we construct a virtual bridge management system capable of sending commands to sensor nodes as well as collecting data from the sensor nodes. Based on the test results of the virtual bridge management system, we show the applicability and advantages of the BiWSLP in terms of energy efficiency and bidirectional communication capability.

  • This paper presents a design of a backbone network which uses a rigister-Insertion ring structure, The introduction of a high speed register in sertton backbone ring enables high performance inter-network 4ommunicatlons In a simple and modular structure at low cost and Its concurrent communications.. Two or more bridge nodes can be used to construct a register Insertion backbone ring network. The high bandwidth of the backbone ring sup ports heavy traffic for Inter-segment Eornrnunicatlons. The bridge node does both local address filtering to block data entering the ring and remote address filtering to block data entering the local LAN segment . Title local address greatly reduces the rate on the backbone ring and the remote address filterlng greatly reduces the traffic rate on each LAN segment. An feature makes the network the network reconflguratlon simpler and transparent to users. A throughput analysis Is used to deterrune the bandwidth of the backbone rlr)g transmission medium.

  • The design concept of high speed railway bridges is applied to a method for increasing the stiffness of existing bridge structures considering the impact factor by a static load. Generally, the process of structural design would be relied upon an advanced foreign technology. However, the dynamic amplification factor (DAF) and dynamic capacity assessment of high speed railway bridges may be conducted essentially a detailed estimation because the resonance phenomenon is affected by the long length (380 m) and high speed (300 km/h) moving of a high speed railway (Korea Train eXpress: KTX). Therefore, this study will be examined the dynamic capacity of the typical PSC Box Girder high speed railway bridge efficiently, and offered the basic information for the reasonable structural design. For this, the static analysis is conducted considering the load line diagram of KTX based upon existing references. In addition, the KTX moving load is transformed into the time series load considering various analytical variables. The time history analysis is assessed reasonable using the transformed time series load. At that time, analytical variables for calculating the time series load are considered loading node distance, time increment and KTX velocity variation etc. The dynamic capacity of the PSC Box Girder high speed railway bridge is examined based upon the FE analysis result systematically. The structural safety is assessed quantitatively in accordance with the related regulation of the inside and outside of the country.

  • Complex and large lattice type structures are frequently used in design of bridge, tower, crane and aerospace structures. In general, in order to analyze these structures we have used the finite element method(FEM). This method is the most widely used and powerful tool for structural analysis. However, it is necessary to use a large amount of computer memory and computation time because the FEM resuires many degrees of freedom for solving dynamic problems exactly for these complex and large structures. For overcoming this problem, the authors developed the transfer stiffness coefficient method(TSCM). This method is based on the concept of the transfer of the nodal dynamic stiffness coefficient which is related to force and displacement vector at each node. In this paper, the authors formulate vibration analysis algorithm for a complex and large lattice type structure using the transfer of the nodal dynamic stiffness coefficient. And we confirmed the validity of TSCM through numerical computational and experimental results for a lattice type structure.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient MAC scheduling algorithm for supporting Bluetooth scatternet operations. Our proposed algorithm improves overall performances of scatter mode[2, 3] and considers QoS requirements of each link of the bridge node of a scatternet. Scatter mode is based on time division scheduling and provides every links of a scatternet with fair service opportunities. However, since each Bluetooth devices has various traffic characteristics. fair allocation of service opportunities is not efficient and may cause extravagance of wireless resources. Therefore, we propose a new efficient inter-piconet scheduling algorithm compliant with the current Bluetooth specification[1], and demonstrate its improved performances via computer simulations.
