  • The inspections that are being done on current bridges in our country are made to go through a process of being recorded on the management system and then converted by the computer. This has deteriorated the credibility of manual-analog types of data, inefficient care of information, and produced potential problems of the structures of bridges through subjective evaluations. In order to solve these troubles, this research has aimed at effectiveness, management, and convenience so that the inspector at the actual scene of the bridge structures will be able to achieve the primary purpose of infrastructure safety through precise supervision. To assist this, this study has suggested a state of the art IT intellectual management system that has applied RFID. This system has been designed to decrease the inspecting time on the actual scene, which will provide more time for efficient inspection and by using the converted DB, managing and utilizing high quality data will come naturally and through the objective evaluation, it will be possible to make exact judgments of the structures of the bridge. Also, regardless of the location, it has been found that the work performance was excellent through highly effective management.

  • This paper presents a methodology for the determination of optimal managing criteria for cable tension force in cable-stayed bridges using acceleration data acquired by monitoring system. There are many long span bridges installed with monitoring system in Korea. The monitoring systems are installed to diagnose abnormal behavior or damages in bridges and to warn these to bridge management agency. In cable-stayed bridges, the cable tension force could be an important indicator of abnormal behavior because of the geometric configuration of the cable-stayed bridge. If the management value of cable tension force is set too high or too low, then the monitoring system could not warn properly for the abnormal behavior of a bridge. Generally, the management value is set by empirical or engineering judgment, but in this paper, a new methodology for the determination of managing criteria for cable tension force is proposed based on the probability distribution model for tension force and reliability analysis. The proposed methodology is applied to a real concrete cable-stayed bridge in order to investigate its applicability.

  • In a long-span bridge, the cables are important elements that support the load of the bridge. Accordingly, the cable tension is a very important variable in evaluating the health and safety of the bridge. The most popular methods of estimating the cable tensions are the direct method, which directly measures the cable stresses using load cells, hydraulic jacking devices, etc., and the vibration method, which inverses the tensions using the cable shapes and the measured dynamic characteristics. Studies on the use of the electromagnetic (EM) sensor, which detects the magnetic field variations caused by the change in the stress of the steel in the cable, are increasing. In this study, the lift-off test, the EM sensor, and the vibration method (Vision-based System and Accelerometer) were used to measure cable tension, and their results were compared and analyzed.

  • In this paper, a prototype of the Bridge-Transported Servo Manipulator (BTSM) system is introduced, which has been developed to do operation and maintenance jobs remotely in a hot cell. The system consists of a telescopic transporter, a slave arm, a master arm, and a control system. Several tests such as a positional tracking, a weight handling, reliability, and operability have been performed and test results are presented. Based on the test results, an upgraded system which will be used during demonstrations of the advanced spent fuel conditioning process (ACP) has been designed.

  • This study examined the safety of a cable stayed bridge caused by damage to the cable system. Many cable-supported bridges, including cable-stayed bridges and suspension bridges, have been constructed on the Korean peninsula. This requires efficient maintenance and management because this structure has complex structural components and systems. This large structure also often faces risks either from manmade causes or natural phenomena. In 2015, the cables on one cable-stayed bridge in South Korea was struck by lightning, which led to a fire on the cables. These cables were damaged, which put the bridge at risk. This bridge was back in use after a few weeks of investigations and replacements of the cables but this was done at enormous social and economic expense. After this event, risk-based management for infrastructure is required by public demand. Therefore, this study examined the risks on the cable system due to potential damage. In this paper, a one cable-stayed bridge in South Korea was selected and its safety was investigated based on the damage scenarios of cable system for efficient and prompt management, and to support decision making. FEM analysis was conducted to evaluate the safety of the bridges after damage to the cable system.

  • In this paper, a research was performed to develop a wireless measurement system for bridge monitoring using MEMS sensor and bluetooth wireless communication module. First, in order to prove the suitability of MEMS sensor for the bridge measurement, its ranges of measuring acceleration and of frequency response were experimented. Also, the quality of wireless communication was tested by an experiment on long-distance communication for the knowledge of maximum communication distance, and also by an experiment on the data transmit-receive capability both inside and outside of a steel box bridge. Later, placing the wireless acceleration sensor system that had been developed in our lab on a bridge in public service, we acquired vibration data from the bridge under traffic load and analyzed its dynamic characteristics in realtime. For the analysis of the data, NExT & ERA algorithm were employed. The result of analysis was compared to the FE analysis of the same bridge, and the comparison made it possible to evaluate the performance of wireless acceleration sensor system. As a result, it was proven that the wireless acceleration sensor system developed with the use of MEMS sensor and bluetooth wireless communication module could be effectively applied to the measurement of structure whose vibration feature was low frequency like a bridge.

  • The impact behavior of a multigirder concrete bridge under single and multiple moving vehicles is studied based on correlated road surface characteristics. The bridge structure is modeled as grillage beam system. A 3D nonlinear vehicle model with eleven degrees of freedom is utilized according to the HS20-44 truck design loading in the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) specifications. A triangle correlation model is introduced to generate four classes of longitudinal road surface roughness as multi-correlated random processes along deck transverse direction. On the basis of a correlation length of approximately half the bridge width, the upper limits of impact factors obtained under confidence level of 95 percent and side-by-side three-truck loading provide probability-based evidence for the evaluation of AASHTO specifications. The analytical results indicate that a better transverse correlation among road surface roughness generally leads to slightly higher impact factors. Suggestions are made for the routine maintenance of this type of highway bridges.

  • A new type bridge combining an integral bridge and a pair of geosynthetic-reinforced soil (GRS) retaining walls having full-height rigid (FHR) facings, called the GRS integral bridge, is proposed. The geosynthetic reinforcement layers are connected to the FHR facings (i.e., RC parapets) that are integrated with a girder without using any girder-support. GRS integral bridges are basically much more cost-effective in construction and long-term maintenance while having a much higher seismic stability than conventional-type bridges having a girder via movable and fixed supports on a pair of cantilever abutments. GRS integral bridges are better than bridges using GRS retaining walls as abutments and also than conventional integral bridges with unreinforced backfill. To validate the above, a series of static cyclic lateral loading tests of the facing and a series of shaking table tests were performed on smallscaled models of different bridge types.

  • Construction of concrete slab track is trending to increase gradually in national and international for reduction in track maintenance cost and secure of ride comfort. But elastic pad becomes superannuated due to repeated train operation. After all, it brings change of pad stiffness and it could directly act on track and bridge as load transmission and impact force. In this study, we carried out laboratory test changing pad stiffness after making a model of 15m bridge and laying concrete slab track. Also, we carried out static and dynamic behaviors test(stress, natural frequency, damping ratio, vibrational acceleration, deflection) of bridge and track and experimentally analyzed them by change of elastic pad stiffness on rail fastener.
