  • The stability of brass coated on steel cords with pH and applied constant potential changes in aqueous solution has been investigated by AC impedance measurements. In solutions of the constant pH, as a applied constant potential is shifted to positive potential, the coating pore resistance is reduced. The fact indicates that as a applied constant potential is shifted to positive potential, the brass coated is dissolved more in solution. The stability of brass coated on steel cords decrease in the order pH=7.1 > pH=4.0 > pH=10.0. The above results are demonstrated by the data of scanning of electronic microscopy(SEM)/energy dispersive spectrometer(EDS).

  • Steel tire cords were subjected to plasma polymerization coating of acetylene in order to enhance the adhesion to rubber compounds. Plasma polymerization coating was varied to plasma polymerization coating of acetylene, argon plasma etching+plasma polymerization, or argon plasma. etching+plasma polymerization with Ar carrier gas. Adhesion was evaluated via TCAT samples and compared to those with brass coated tire cord. For durability study, plasma polymer cooled tire cords were aged in lab atmosphere for 1, 3, 5, 10 or 15 days, while TCAT specimens prepared with plasma polymer coated tire cords were aged in distilled water, 10% NaCl solution or $100^{\circ}C$ oven for 1, 2, 3 or 4 weeks. After testing, failure surfaces were analyzed with SEM/EDX. Among the treatments, the highest adhesion was obtained by Ar etching+acetylene plasma. polymerization coating with Ar carrier gas, providing almost same pull-out force as the brass coated tire cords. Upon the aging of the tire cords in the lab atmosphere, brass coated tire cords provided better adhesion than plasma polymer coated tire cords, while the TCAT samples with plasma polymer coated tire cords exhibited similar or slightly superior durability to those with brass coated tire cords.

  • Corrosion of brass coated steel cords in the acetonitrile solution of sulfenamide derivatives, N-Cyclohexylbenzothiazole-2-sulfenamide (CBTS), N,N'-Dicyclohexylbenzothiazole-2-sulfenamide (DCBS), N-tert-Butylbenzothiazole-2-sulfenamide (TBBS), N-tert-Amylbenzothiazole-2-sulfenamide (TABS), and N-Oxydiethylbenzothiazole-2-sulfenamide (OBTS) was investigated by potentiostatic anodic and cathodic polarization (Tafel plot), DC polarization resistance, and AC impedance measurements. The corrosion current densities and rates are 1.236 ${\mu}A /cm^2$ and 0.655 MPY for CBTS; 1.881 ${\mu}A/cm^2$ and 0.988 MPY for DCBS; 2.367 ${\mu}A/cm^2$ and 1.257 MPY for TBBS; 3.398 ${\mu}A /cm^2$ and 1.809 MPY for TABS, respectively. OBTS among derivatives under study shows the lowest corrosion density (0.546 ${\mu}A /cm^2$) and the slowest corrosion rate (0.288 MPY). Also, the charge transfer resistances and the double layer capacitances are 275.21 $k{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$ and 7.0 ${\mu}F{cdot}cm^{-2}$ for CBTS; 14.24 ${\mu}F{\cdot}cm^2$ and 26 ${\mu}F{\cdot}cm^{-2}$ for DCBS; 54.15 $k{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$ and 26 ${\mu}F{\cdot}cm^{-2}$ for TBBS; 0.96$k{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$ and 83 ${\mu}F{\cdot}cm^{-2}$ for TABS, respectively. The weaker the electron donating inductive effect of derivatives is and the smaller the effect of steric hindrance is, the more the corrosion of brass coated steel cords in the acetonitrile solution of sulfenamide derivatives is prevented. The above results agree with that observed in the field of tire industry.

  • Adhesion between cord and rubber compound of brass plated steel cords pretreated at $80^{\circ}C$ in air and at $80^{\circ}C$ and 85% of relative humidity was studied. Surface change of brass with pretreatment was also studied. Brass was oxidized at thermal treatment and oxidation was accelerated with water at humid treatment. Adhesion of pretreated cords decreased with treatment period. The decreasing tendency of rubber coverage was severe. Decrease in adhesion properties due to brass oxidation was discussed relating to the overgrowth of zinc oxide layer.

  • Steel tire cords were coated via RF Plasma Polymerization of acetylene in order to enhance adhesion to rubber compounds. Adhesion of tire cords was measured by TACT as a function of plasma polymerization and argon etching conditions such as power, treatment time and chamber pressure. Tested tire cords were analysed by SEM to elucidate the adhesion mechanism. The highest adhesion values were obtained with argon etching condition at 90W, 10min, 30mtorr followed by acetylene plasma polymerization condition at 10W, 30sec., 30mtorr. In SEM analysis, the plasma polymerized tire cord at the optimized condition showed 100% rubber coverage as observed from brass-plated steel tire cords.
