In tread braking of freight cars, braking force is produced by the friction between the wheel and the braking shoe. Friction coefficients such as the brake power, weight variation and brake shoe types should be sensitively treated as the design parameters. The conditions of the car, empty and weighted, should also be taken into consideration in brake force design and the control of brake force has some limitations in terms of the brake system design so that the brake materials selection should be considered as important measures to solve that difficulties. Friction characteristics of brake materials should remain within the range of maximum and minimum value and the friction performance should remain stable regardless of braking time and temperature. This study presented an experimental evaluation method to secure optimum braking performance by keeping safe braking effect and braking distance by the friction coefficient of the brake shoe of the freight cars.
Wheel-slip control systems are able to control the braking force more accurately and can be adapted to different vehicles more easily than conventional ABS systems. But, in order to achieve the superior braking performance through the wheel-slip control, real-time information such as the tire braking force is required. For example, in the case of EHB (Electro-Hydraulic Brake) systems, the tire braking force cannot be measured directly, but can be approximated based on the characteristics of the brake disk-pad friction. The friction characteristics can change significantly depending on aging of the brake, moisture on the contact area, heat etc. In this paper, a wheel slip The proposed wheel slip control system is composed of two subsystems: braking force monitor and robust slip controller In the brake force monitor subsystem, the tire braking forces as well as the brake disk-pad friction coefficient are estimated considering the friction variation between the brake pad and disk. The robust wheel slip control subsystem is designed based on sliding mode control methods and follows the target wheel-slip using the estimated tire braking forces. The proposed sliding mode controller is robust to the uncertainties in estimating the braking force and brake disk-pad friction. The performance of the proposed wheel-slip control system is evaluated in various simulations.
Disk brake system transforms a large amount of kinetic energy to thermal energy in a short time. As the size and speed of automotive increases in recent years, the disk brakes absorbs more thermal energy. And this thermal energy can cause an unacceptable braking performance due to the high transient temperature, that is attained at the friction surface of brake disk and pad. Although these high temperatures are one of the biggest problems. In this study, the overall thermal behavior of ventilated disk brake system was investigated by numerical method. The 3-Dimensional unsteady model was simulated by using a general purpose software package “FLUENT” to obtain the temperature distributions of disk and pad. The model includes the more realistic braking method, which repeats braking and release. The effects of several parameters such as the repeated braking, inlet air velocity and thermal conductivity on the temperature distribution were investigated.
The adequate design of a passenger car braking system, which is directly related to the safety of a car, is very important since the safety is an essential design parameter of a car to keep men and car from the damage. The thermal behaviors of the ventilated disk has been investigated based on the air cooling effects during repeat braking operations. In this study, the thermal behavior of ventilated disk brake system was investigated by numerical method. The 3-Dimensional unsteady model was simulated by using a general purpose software package “FLUENT” to obtain the temperature distributions of disk and pad. The model includes the more realistic braking method, which repeats braking and release. The effects of aspect ratio of ventilated hole on the heat dissipation was investigated.
Vehicle stability control system can enhance the vehicle stability and handling in the emergency situations through the control of traction and braking forces at the individual wheels. To achieve the desired performance, the wheel slip controller manages the hydraulic braking system to generate the desired braking force at each wheel. In this study, we propose the wheel slip controller for the generation of the braking forces based on multiple sliding mode control theory with the pulse width modulation. The proposed controller follows to the slip ratio and the brake pressure the desired ones so that the vehicle stability controller can Intervene braking force at each wheel. We show the validity and usefulness of the proposed controller through computer simulations.
In general, the braking system of high speed train has an important role for the safety of the train. To stop safely the train at its pre-decided position, it is necessary to combine property the various brakes. Generally high speed train has adopted a combined electrical and mechanical (friction) braking system. Electrical brakes are consist of rheostatic brake, regenerative brake and eddy current brake and mechanical brakes are composed of disc brake, wheel disc brake and tread brake. In this paper, we introduce braking performance analysis and inspection though simulation and research to reduce braking distance.
The influence of braking force generated by one tire on vehicle dynamics was investigated by simulation and ground test. A 8 d. o. f vehicle model was developed for simulation. And a special device to apply brake pressure to individual wheel was built for vehicle test. As a result of corner braking test on straight driving, the dynamic responses such as yawrate, lateral acceleration and roll angle were produced in the vehicle, which were in a good agreement to the simulation results. This shows that comer braking used in VDC system can control vehicle dynamics to improve controllability and directional stability.
This paper develops ABS braking real - time simulator to develop vehicle braking system by simulation. Recently, real-time simulation is widely used in the development of vehicles to decrease development time. In the field of electronic braking, real-time simulation is actively underway. In order to simulate electronic braking model in real time, a vehicle model, a hydraulic model, and a control S/W model are required. These models must be calculated in one platform. Therefore, in this paper, a vehicle model composed of CarSim and a hydraulic model composed of SimulationX using S/W in actual ABS controller was developed as a Simulink model base and linked with Matlab real time model. Using this real-time model, design effects of the electronic braking controller were simulated according to road surface condition to verify its operability.
This paper proposes the design of anti-braking system on aircraft and wheel slip ratio control using adaptive slide mode control. By maintaining the desired wheel slip ratio under runway conditions, we can obtain the maximal frictional force and reduce the braking range. In this paper, we apply an adaptive sliding mode control to aircraft brake system and it can guarantee the robustness under variations in brake characteristics. The performance of proposed controller is verified in simulations.
