Evaluation of temperature effects on brake wear particles using clustered heatmaps

  • Temperature effects on the generation of brake wear particles from railway vehicles were generated, with a particular focus on the generation of ultrafine particles. A real scale brake dynamometer test was repeated five times under low and high initial temperatures of brake discs, respectively, to obtain generalized results. Size distributions and temporal patterns of wear particles were analyzed through visualization using clustered heatmaps. Our results indicate that high initial temperature conditions promote the generation of ultrafine particles. While particle concentration peaked within the range of fine sized particles under both low and high initial temperature, an additional peak occurred within the range of ultrafine sized particles only under high initial temperature. The timing of peak occurrence also differed between low and high initial temperature conditions. Under low initial temperature fine sized particles were generated intensively at the latter end of braking, whereas under high initial temperature both fine and ultrafine particles were generated more dispersedly along the braking period. The clustered correlation heatmap divided particle sizes into two groups, within which generation timing and concentration of particles were similar. The cut-off point between the two groups was approximately 100 nm, confirming that the governing mechanisms for the generation of fine particles and ultrafine particles are different.

  • As the industry is developed, uses of various electric motor are increasing from general home to various fields of industry, and the kind becomes various daily. For these reasons, it is required to study the remote control and a package management about change of a speed drive system, the supervision of administration appliance by real time, and the collection and process data together using internet prevailed on industry whole. This paper deals with the development of a Web-Based remote control system for permanent magnet synchronous motor drives. The client/server system using TCP/IP protocols and DSP controller for remote control through internet and the Web interface that users can confirm data and state of PMSM(Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor) is developed. This system is available for driving, braking, variable speed control and monitoring for PMSM in real time through administration program of Web-Based.

  • The camera based object detection systems should satisfy the recognition performance as well as real-time constraints. Particularly, in safety-critical systems such as Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), the real-time constraints significantly affects the system performance. Recently, multi-core processors and system-on-chip technologies are widely used to accelerate the object detection algorithm by distributing computational loads. However, due to the advanced hardware, the complexity of system architecture is increased even though additional hardwares improve the real-time performance. The increased complexity also cause difficulty in migration of existing algorithms and development of new algorithms. In this paper, to improve real-time performance and design complexity, a task scheduling strategy is proposed for visual object tracking systems. The real-time performance of the vision algorithm is increased by applying pipelining to task scheduling in a multi-core processor. Finally, the proposed task scheduling algorithm is applied to crosswalk detection and tracking system to prove the effectiveness of the proposed strategy.

Kinetic Energy Recovery System for Electric Vehicles (전기자동차용 기계적 에너지 회생장치)

  • This paper presents a new regenerative brake system of electric vehicles that employs a continuous variable transmission(CVT) and a flywheel. The developed device has advantages over existing regenerative brakes from a standpoint of reliability and versatility in actual driving conditions. The system consists of a CVT, two wheels, a flywheel, a coupling and auxiliary powertrain components. The CVT is designed as a combination of two cones and a roller, which causes the velocity difference between the wheel and the flywheel. The power flow of the flywheel system is controlled by the CVT roller and the coupling through step motors. A prototype has been developed and then its performance has been investigated for various operating conditions. Results show that the storage efficiency of the flywheel is much affected by the vehicle's velocity and it is reduced below 20% for high speed, as compared to the 25% efficiency for an ideal condition. The CVT is a primary factor for lowering the flywheel efficiencies due to large friction and slipping between the cone and the roller.

The Structural and Fatigue Analysis for the Bogie Frame of the Rubber Wheel AGT (고무차륜형 AGT 주행장치의 구조 및 피로해석)

  • Two representative types of the AGT (Automated Guideway Transit) system, which are bogie and steering types, are available for the side-guided system. Each system primarily consists of the bogie frame, suspensions, wheelsets and axles, braking system and transmission system. Among these components, the bogie frame is one of the most significant components subjected to the whole vehicle and passenger loads. This paper describes structural analyses and associated fatigue analyses for each bogie frame depending on the various loading conditions on a basis of the railway vehicle code UIC 515-4. Subsequently, comparisons are made between those two types to estimate which type is more reliable in terms of strength and fatigue. It is observed that the bogie type is a little advantageous over the steering one from the strength analysis. However, the two types are found to be in a reliable range of fatigue even though a realistic fatigue load case is further carried out. In addition, an optimal size of thickness is suggested for designs of the bogie frame.

  • In this study, on-line measuring system were developed to verify performances and functions of traction system that are used in KTX(Korea Train eXpress) synthetically and efficiently, and have been measuring electric signals of vehicle as well as mechanical signals up to the present. Running-braking measuring equipment was constructed in vehicle to optimize signal acquisition and analysis ability of the measuring system. Measurement data of signal were performed acquisition, analysis and evaluation using this equipment. KRRI(Korea Railroad Research Institute) described about main specifications of measuring equipment. Also, the structure and principles as well as main circuit system were explained in brief. KRRI analyzed the characteristics comparing design values with experimental values about running distance, running time and positive acceleration for KTX is running in full traction. We analyzed the distance and time according to number of motor block. In result, running characteristics of traction system in KTX were verified and could be evaluated.

  • Research on fuel cell systems attracting attention as an environmentally friendly energy source has been actively conducted. And research is being conducted on railway vehicles that use direct current power generated by a fuel cell as an energy source. In this paper, a two-phase interleaved bidirectional DC-DC converter has been proposed which can supply electric energy of a battery to a traction motor during powering and charge the battery with regenerative energy during braking. Therefore, the topology of the energy storage system applied to the railway vehicle was analyzed, and the simulation was performed by constructing the power conversion system by this topology. Experiments were also conducted through hardware design and fabrication based on the simulation analysis results, and the validity of the hardware implementation was verified.

Optimization of ride comfort for a three-axle vehicle equipped with interconnected hydro-pneumatic suspension system

  • The aim of this study is the optimization of the parameters of interconnected Hydro-Pneumatic (HP) suspension system of a three-axle vehicle for ride comfort and handling. For HP suspension systems of equivalent vertical stiffness and damping characteristics, interconnected HP suspension systems increase roll and pitch stiffness and damping characteristics of the vehicle as compared to unconnected HP suspension systems. Thus, they result in improved handling and braking/acceleration performances of the vehicle. However, increased roll and pitch stiffness and damping characteristics also increase roll and pitch accelerations, which in turn result in degraded ride comfort performance. Therefore, in order to improve both ride comfort and vehicle handling performances simultaneously, an optimum parameter set of an interconnected HP suspension system is obtained through an optimization procedure. The objective function is formed as the sum of the weighted vertical accelerations according to ISO 2631. The roll angle, one of the important measures of vehicle handling and driving safety, is imposed as a constraint in the optimization study. Upper and lower parameter bounds are used in the optimization in order to get a physically realizable parameter set. Optimization procedure is implemented for a three-axle vehicle with unconnected and interconnected suspension systems separately. Optimization results show that interconnected HP suspension system results in improvements in both ride comfort and vehicle handling performance, as compared to the unconnected suspension system. As a result, interconnected HP suspension systems present a solution to the conflict between ride comfort and vehicle handling which is present in unconnected suspension systems.

  • The electric railway has been widely used as a transportation all over the world. It also was opened in 1973 in korea and it has been steadily proceeded in making electric railway network for a big city and building Keongbu high speed , electric railway. That's why the system of electric railway is able to solve the environmental pollution and operate the useful energy in environmental ways, it helps to increase the ability of transportation and to decrease the cost. Because of the advantage of making the economic situation better, the system of electric railway is trying to do their best in developing technique of electric railway. Because of the increasing of transportation and the high speed operation, cars with regenerative braking system was adapted. Therefore, unbalanced voltage and current of three phase system and the drop and rise of voltage of feeding circuit is expected. Now that building the substation, newly spends lots of costs and time, it is a very difficult situation to solve the problem. We can guess that electric railway line can't receive power from the power system of bigger size in building newly electric railway. In this paper, it was proved that series voltage compensator was suitable as a solution according to voltage drop and voltage fluctuating through computer simulation.

  • In these days, it is widely applications of Linear Induction Motor(LIM) that used propulsion system of maglev and LIM Car. elevator. conveyor system, servo system, etc. The calibration method for, performance of LIM is more difficult than static state of one. Then we made testing system to measurement for dynamic performance of LIM and deal with data acquisition board on PC system. We try to get for the data measuring that is thrust force, braking force versus speed(r.p.m. or time) and current, voltage, frequency versus speed.
