  • Using results obtained from field surveys in the outflow region of the Keum River in winter (February 22), spring (May 9), summer (July 31) and autumn (October 17) in 2000, it was described the nutrient front relating to the hydrography. It showed that the horizontal gradients was sharp in the distributions not only in salinity but also in nutrients in the region of the mouth of estuary far away about 20 km from the dyke of the Keum River during the year. The two layer structure was a ubiquitous feature in the inner estuarine side of the region showing the maximum horizontal gradients in salinity and nutrients. Although the absolute values in salinity and nutrient concentrations were distinguished by season, the nutrient front seperates the saltier and nutrients poor water in the open sea from the brackish and nutrients rich water of the plume. These results suggest that the nutrient front coincides with the esturine front in the region of freshwater influence (ROFI) of the Keum River.

  • To investigate the effects of environmental salinity on the expression of the genes for growth hormone (GH) and prolactin (PRL) in the pituitary, and their receptors (GHR, PRLR) In the kidney, intestine, and gills in teleosts, we acclimated juvenile olive flounders (Paralichthys olivaceus) to different salinities (5, 15, 25, or 32 psu) for 3 days and examined their mRNA levels using the reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). In the fish adapted to low salinity, the PRL mRNA levels in the pituitary were elevated dramatically, whereas the GH mRNA levels did not differ significantly. PRLR mRNA increased significantly in fish exposed to low salinity, whereas GHR mRNA levels did not differ. These results suggest that PRL is an important hormone for flounders that are acclimated to brackish water and it may control ion homeostasis with PRLR in the osmoregulatory organs.

  • Our study aimed to discover indigenous prokaryotic species in Korea. A total of 29 bacterial species in the phylum Proteobacteria were isolated from freshwater and sediment of rivers and brackish zones in Korea. From the high 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity (${\geq}98.8%$) and formation of a robust phylogenetic clade with the closest species, it was determined that each strain belonged to an independent and predefined bacterial species. To our knowledge, there is no official report or publication that has previously described these 29 species in Korea. Specifically, we identified 10, 12, and seven species of eight, 12, and seven genera that belong to classes Alphaproteobacteria, Betaproteobacteria, and Gammaproteobacteria, respectively; all are reported as previously unrecorded bacterial species in Korea. The Gram reaction, colony and cell morphology, basic biochemical characteristics, isolation source, and strain IDs for each are also described.

  • This study investigated a method for monitoring fishes immigrating to upper streams from the sea in relation to water level with elapsed time, and measured fish behavior patterns and swimming speed in a fishing boat gateway using an acoustic camera system. This method was employed due to difficulties, linked to high turbidity, of using only underwater optical systems for monitoring fish migrating to brackish water. Results showed that fish length distribution showed high correlation between haul sampling and an automatic counting algorithm supported by the DIDSON software program. These results will help to maximize the effects of fish run management by increasing understanding of the amount of major fish species migrating in relation to durable water levels.

  • Specimens of Diophrys appendiculata (Ehrenberg, ] 838) and D. scutum (Dujardin, 1841) have been collected from the coastal and brackish waters around near Ulsan, during 2004-2007. Diophrys appendiculata and D. scutum are described taxonomically for the first time in Korea. Diagnostic characteristics of these species are as follows. Diophrys appendiculata: size in vivo $43-68{\times}25-50{\mu}m$, adoral zone of membranelles (AZM) covering 43-74% of cell length in impregnated and 46-65% in vivo specimens with 32-47 adoral membranelles (AM). Paroral membrane is slightly curved. Four to five dorsal kinetal (DK) rows are fragmented and anterior and posterior parts of rows densely ciliated. Two macronuclear nodules (Ma) irregular and elongated oval in shape and widely separated. D. scutum: size in vivo $125-225{\times}75-140{\mu}m$, AZM extending to the middle of right border of body and covering 50-60% of cell length with 56-75 AMs. Body shape is typically ovoid with prominent concave margin at right posterio-lateral end, and rather thick and wide longitudinal ridge along lower buccal cavity on ventral side. Two macronuclei shaped like a sausage. five to six dorsal kineties.

  • Biofouling in brackish water reverse osmosis (RO) membranes still needs extensive research to understand cause and mechanism and to obtain methods for reduction of its impact on RO applications. Natural compounds with biofilm formation inhibitory properties are being investigated. Two compounds, vanillin and Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), were selected due to their great potential on biofilm formation inhibition. Vanillin shows inhibition on quorum sensing mechanisms of biofilm formation. EGCG has potential to inactivate microbial activity. The two compounds were incorporated in typical polyamide reverse osmosis membranes and evaluated on flux behaviours and biofilm formation potential. The surface properties of membrane coated with vanillin were changed tremendously compared to those with EGCG. As a result, the flux was reduced substantially. The biofilm formation seems hindered with EGCG coated membranes compared to the virgin membranes. More research is needed to optimize coating methods applicable to RO membranes and to enhance biofouling reduction.

  • Variations of dissolved oxygen were studied for two years in two brackish lakes, Etang de Berre and Etang de Vaine related to the north-west Mediteranean Sea. The variations also were studied at the same time in nearby seawater, and in the four main tributaries of Etang de Berre. The distributions of dissolved oxygen values and their spatio-temporal variations were well matched with the characteristics of the water masses in different environments. The concentration of dissolved oxygen and the rate of oxygen saturation in seawater (Carry-le-Rouet) ranged from 5.0 to 6.0 ml.1$\^$-1/, and from 95 to 105%, respectively. The amount of dissolved oxygen in Etang de Berre oscillated between 0.17 and 11.43 ml.1$\^$-1/ with an average of 7.40ml1$\^$-1/.The rate of oxygen saturation oscillated between 2.9 and 168.3%. Annual values of the four tributaries are as follows (ml.1$\^$-1/ and %): Durance:8.68 and 113.6;Arc : 6.87 and 95.3;Touloubre: 6.87 and 91.0;Durancole;6.36 and 96.8 The data for the evolutions of dissolved oxygen in Etang de Berre on the period between 1965 and 1978 are presented. A rather good negative correlation links oxygen with temperatures.

  • BACKGROUND: Wastewaters were collected from 25 sites of two industrial areas of Mymensingh and Gazipur in Bangladesh to assess metallic toxicity of wastewater for irrigation usage. METHODS AND RESULTS: The analyzed wastewaters were slightly alkaline to alkaline in nature and were problematic for irrigation except 3 samples. As per TDS values, 9 samples were rated as fresh water and the rest 16 were classified as brackish water. EC and SAR reflected that all samples were medium salinity (C2), high salinity (C3), very high salinity (C4) and low alkalinity (S1) hazard classes expressed as C2S1, C3S1 and C4S1. Wastewaters of different industries were graded as excellent, good, permissible and doubtful for irrigation purpose as per SSP. According to hardness ($H_T$), wastewater were under moderately hard, hard and very hard classes. Cd, Cr and Cu ions were treated as toxicant for irrigating soils and crops. Zn was problematic for long-term irrigation. The concentrations of Pb, Fe and Na were far below the toxic levels. Synergistic relationships were observed between pH-EC, pH-TDS, EC-TDS, SAR-SSP and SSP-hardness. CONCLUSION(s): If wastewater is applied for irrigation due to the fresh water shortage, it can contaminate soil due to some toxic metal ions.

  • The third human case of natural infection by Heterophvopsis continuo in Korea was found in Chinju, Kyongsangnam-do. The case was a 53-year-old mn. He used to eat raw brackish and fresh water fish. After praziquantel treatment and purgation, H. continua were collected from the diarrheal stool together with Metononimw vokognwai, Heterophves nocens and Echinostona hokense. His clinical complaints were indigestion, epigastric discomport, poor appetite and fatigue. The complaints were considered rather due to heavy M. Wokoscwci infection.
