In this study, the flexural behaviors of full-scale prestressed concrete box girders are experimentally investigated. Four girders were fabricated using two types of concrete (compressive strengths: 50 MPa and 70 MPa) and tested under four-point bending until failure. The measured parameters included the deflection, the stress and strain in concrete and steel bars, and cracks in concrete. The measurement results were used to analyze the failure mode, load-bearing capacity, and deformability of each girder. A finite element model is established to simulate the flexural behaviors of the girders. The results show that the use of high-performance concrete and reasonable combination of prestressed tendons could improve the mechanical performance of the box girders, in terms of the crack resistance, load-carrying capacity, stress distribution, and ductility.
For long-span suspension bridges with their intrinsic limit in flutter, some counter measures, for example, central stabilizers, should be adopted to improve aerodynamic stability to meet with the appropriate wind resistance requirements. The present paper introduces aerodynamic stabilization for long-span suspension bridges with box girders by using central stabilizers based on Xihoumen Bridge with the main span of 1650 m. The aerodynamic stabilization study covers experimental investigation of sectional model testing, comprehensive evaluation of three central stabilizers and theoretical analysis of stabilizing mechanism related to flutter derivatives, aerodynamic damping and degree participation.

The earthquake resistant design for roadway bridges introduced in 1992 is conducted according to the "Standard Specification for Roadway Bridges", Division V, Seismic Design and the first revision of the Standard was done in 1996. However, dur to different concepts of the earthquake resistant design from those of the other designs, the provisions given in the Standard are still not applied appropriately. In this paper the verification of the earthquake resistant capacity of a bridge with typical configurations, 5-span steel box girder bridge, is carried out based on the application rules of the present Standard in order to provide clear understandings about the earthquake resistant verification and the earthquake resistant design as well.n as well.

This paper presents a procedure to minimize the cost of materials of cable-stayed bridges with composite box girder and concrete tower. Two sets of iterations are included in the proposed procedure. The first set of iteration performs the structural analysis for a cable-stayed bridge. The second set of iteration performs the optimization process. The design is formulated as a general mathematical problem with the cost of the bridge as the objective function and bending forces, shear forces, fatigue stresses, buckling and deflection as constraints. The constraints are developed based on the Canadian National Standard CAN/CSA-S6-88. The finite element method is employed to perform the complicated nonlinear structural analysis of the cable-stayed bridges. The internal penalty function method is used in the optimization process. The limit states design method is used to determine the load capacity of the bridge. A computer program written in FORTRAN 77 is developed and its validity is verified by several practical-sized designs.
The construction of segmental precast concrete bridge is an increase due to its superior performance and economic advantages. This type of bridge is appropriate for spans within 30 to 150 m (100 to 500 ft), known as mega-projects and the design optimization would lead to considerable economic benefits. A box-girder cross section superstructure of balanced cantilever construction method is assessed here. The depth of cross section, (variable along the span linearly), bottom flange thickness, and the count of strands are considered as design variables. The optimum design is characterized by geometry, serviceability, ductility, and ultimate limit states specified by AASHTO. Genetic algorithm (GA) is applied in two fronts: as to the saving in construction cost 8% and as to concrete volume 6%. The sensitivity analysis is run by considering different parameters like span/depth ratio, relation between superstructure cost, span length and concrete compressive strength.

The number of aged bridges is increasing so that bridges over 30 years old account for about 11% of all bridges. Consequently, the development of a seismic performance evaluation method that considers the effects of ageing is essential for a seismic retrofitting process for improvement of the seismic safety of existing old bridges. Assessment of the damage situation of bridges after the recent earthquakes in Korea has been limited to the bearings, anchor, and concrete mortar on piers. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the seismic responses of PSC box girder bridges by considering the ageing effect of rubber bearings (RBs) and lead-rubber bearings (LRBs). The modification factor proposed by AASHTO is used to take into account the ageing effect in the bearings. PSC box girder bridges with RBs and LRBs were 3D modeled and analyzed with the OpenSEES program. In order to evaluate the ageing effect of RBs and LRBs, 40 near fault and 40 far field records were used as the input earthquakes. When considering the effect of ageing, the displacement responses and shear forces of bridge bearings (RBs and LRBs) were found to increase mostly under the analytical conditions. It was shown that the effect of ageing is greater in the case of RBs than in the case of LRBs.

The dynamic behavior of two steel bridges crossed by the Korean High Speed Train(KHST) has been investigated experimentally and the results are compared with the specification requirement of BRDM and other typical PSC Box bridge's responses. The investigated bridges are a 2-girder steel bridge of 1@40m span length(E-Won Bridge), 2@50m span length (Ji-Tan Bridge), and a PSC Box girder bridge of 2@40m span length (Yeon-Jae Bridge). A set of experimental tests were performed during operation of KHST, and a number of accelerometers, LVDTs and ring-type displacement transducers were utilized for measurement of three kinds of dynamic responses (acceleration, deflection, and end-rotation angle). Measured responses show that the vertical deflections and end-rotation angles of the three bridges are all satisfying the spec. requirement with large margin, but it was also found acceleration responses which are very close or exceed the limit value. Most of the excessive acceleration responses were found when the passing velocity of the KHST is close to the critical velocity ($V_{cr}$) which causes resonance. No noticeable differences of dynamic responses due to the different materials(steel or concrete) could be found within these experimental results.
Balanced cantilever construction is extensively used in the construction of prestressed concrete (PSC) box-girder bridges. Shear-lag effect is usually considered in finished bridges, while the cumulative shear-lag effect in bridges during balanced cantilever construction is considered only rarely. In this paper, based on the balanced cantilever construction sequences of large-span PSC box-girder bridges, the difference method is employed to analyze the cumulative shear-lag effect of box girders with varying depth under the concrete segments' own weight. During cantilever construction, no negative shear-lag effect is generated, and the cumulative shear-lag effect under the balanced construction procedure is greater than the instantaneous shear-lag effect in which the full dead weight is applied to the entire cantilever. Three cross-sections of Jianjiang Bridge were chosen for the experimental observation of shear-lag effect, and the experimental results are in keeping with the theoretical results of cumulative shear-lag effect. The research indicates that only calculating the instantaneous shear-lag effect is not sufficiently safe for practical engineering purposes.
