  • Effect of reentrant type bowl geometry on combustion characteristics was investigated in a D.I. diesel engine. The main factor was the cupola height of bowl center and the reentrant angle of combustion chamber, and the cylinder pressure, engine performance and emissions of the engine using the total 11 kinds of the combustion chamber were measured by test. The results are as follows. The NOx decreases by increasing the cupola height of bowl center because it makes the decreasing of maximum combustion pressure by the heat loss and smooth combustion from good airflow. The smoke increases by increasing the reentrant angle at high speed range of the engine, but decrease at low and medium speed range until the reentrant angle becomes $15^{\circ}$.

  • Effect of reentrant type bowl geometry on combustion characteristics was investigated in a D.1.diesel engine. The main factor was the aspect ratio (Bowl Diameter/Bowl Depth) of bowl of combustion chamber, and the measured data include the cylinder pressure, engine performance and emissions of the engine using the 4 kinds of the combustion chamber. Experimental results indicate that the effect of dc/H and nozzle protrusion are relatively small and there exists an optimum dc/H according to the combustion conditions. It is also found that the smoke emission is quite sensitive the overall combustion time where the 90 percentage of the combustion heat is released. The smoke mission increases by shortening the 90% combustion time while it decreases by delaying the 90% combustion time.

  • A study to investigate the influence of combustion chamber shape, especially piston top face configuration, on the combustion stability is presented with CFD analysis and single cylinder GDI engine test. Initial configuration of the piston bowl was designed with CFD analysis and further parametric studies of the design factors on the piston top face were carried out through the single cylinder GDI engine test. It was found that both the geometry of piston top face and the compression ratio have great influences on the combustion stability. Of interest is that the design factors of the GDI piston to prevent mixture diffusion out of the piston bowl have important roles for the stable combustion at the stratified mixture condition. Also the relationship between spray impingement and flow pattern in a GDI piston bowl should be considered to design an optimal bowl configuration for stable stratified combustion.

The main factor was the aspect ratio (Bowl Diameter / Bowl Depth) of bowl of combustion chamber, and the cylinder pressure, engine performance and emissions of the engine using the 4 kinds of the combustion chamber were meadured. Also, the combustion characteristics compared of the experimented and the calculated values which is used by the Hiroyasu's combustion model. The results are as follows; The effect of $d_c/H$ on ignition delay period are small. The smoke is corerelated to the heat release of the premixed and the diffusion combustion, i.g, the smoke decreased by decreasing the premixed combustion or increasing the diffusion combustion on cumulative heat release. The premixed combustion process has more effect than the diffusion combustion on smoke. The formal tendency of $d_c/H$ on engine performance has not appear.

  • The reactivity controlled compression ignition (RCCI) is the technology that provides two different types of fuel to the combustion chamber with the advantage of significantly reducing particulate matter and nitrogen oxides emissions. However, due to the characteristics of lean combustion, combustion efficiency is worsened. The conventional type of pistons for conventional diesel combustion (CDC) has mostly been used in the researches on RCCI. Because the pistons for CDC are optimized to enhance flow and target spray, the pistons are unsuitable for RCCI. In this study, a piston that is suitable for RCCI is designed to improve combustion efficiency. The new piston was designed by considering the factors such as squish geometry, bowl depth, and surface area. The experiment was carried out by fixing the energy supply to 0.9kJ/cycle and 1.5kJ/cycle respectively. The two pistons were quantitatively compared in terms of thermal efficiency and combustion efficiency.

  • A gasoline direct injection single cylinder engine has been developed to study operational characteristics for highly stratified conditions. Parameters related to design and experiment were also studied to understand the characteristics of combustion and emissions at some part load conditions. It was found that optimal timings between the end of fuel injection and spark ignition were existed for stable combustion under the stratified modes, In a low engine speed, fuel spray behavior around piston bowl was important for stable combustion. The in-cylinder air motion affecting fuel spray behavior was found to be a dominant factor at higher engine speed as fuel injection timing had to be advanced to secure enough time for fuel evaporation and mixing with surrounding air. As swirl ratio increased, spark timing could be advanced for stable combustion and a higher compression ratio could be used for improved fuel consumption and stable combustion at the stratified mode. It was also observed that electrode geometry and piston bowl shape played an important role for combustion and emission characteristics and some results were shown for comparison.

  • A new moving boundary technique for leap-frog finite difference numerical mode is proposed for the resonable simulation of coastal inundation over discontinuous topography. The new scheme improves the moving boundary technique developed by Imamura(1996). The present scheme is tested using the analytical solution of Thacker(1981) for the case of free oscillation with moving boundary in a parabolic bowl. Finally, a numerical simulation is conducted for the flooding over a tidal barrier constructed on a simple concave geometry. A general feature of inundation over a discontinuous topography is well described by the numerical model.

  • Starting from Guggenheim Bilbao Museum in 1997, it has been increased steadily that complex geometry buildings using digital designs and construction process. Since 2010, the domestic Freeform design has been widely used for buildings such as Dongdaemoon Design Plaza, Seoul City Hall, Tri-Bowl, and etc. But there are many defects such as the increased cost and period of construction, and the declined quality of construction because of the lack of optimized method and engineering experiences. Therefore, this study has an effort to review case study of the recent freeform buildings and construction methods using digital fabrications. And this study proposed the improve method for the construction quality for freeform buildings.

  • Polynomial is used to optimize crown bowl shape of a marine medium speed diesel engine piston. The primary goal of this paper is that it's for an original design through a thermal stress and highest temperature minimum. Piston is modeled using solid element with 6 design variables defined the positional coordinate value. Global optimum of design variables are found and evaluated as developed and integrated with the optimum algorithm combining genetic algorithm(GA) and tabu search(TS). Iteration for optimization is performed based on the result of finite element analysis. After optimization, thermal stress and highest temperature reduced 0.68% and 1.42% more than initial geometry.
