This study was performed to evaluate the effects of extracts of Drynariae Rhizoma on the characteristics of rat calvaria cells(RCV) and bone marrow cells(RBM) which have the important role on the bone formation in vitro. Drynariae Rhizoma has been known as the useful herbal medicament for treatment of the wound healing including regeneration of bone fracture, and also has been used to treat the periodontal lesions, tooth mobility, gingival bleeding and pus discharge via sulcus in Oriental Medicine. In control group, the cells were cultured alone with Dulbeco's Modified Eagle's Medium contained with 10% fetal bovine serum, 100U/ml penicillin, $100{\mu}g/ml$ streptomycin, $0.5{\mu}g/ml$ amphotericin-B. In experimental group, extracts of Drynariae Rhizoma(0.1, 1, 5, 10, $50{\mu}g/ml$) were added into the above culture condition. And then each group was characterized by examing the cell proliferation at 1, 3, 7, 14, 21, 30th day, the amount of total protein synthesis and alkaline phosphatase activity of RCV at 2,4th day and those of RBM at 3, 6th day. And also, the calcified nodule of RCV was examed at 3, 5th day in three goup, control, experimental, culture with the PDGF group. The results were as follow ; 1. Both RCV and RBM cells in Drynariae Rhizoma-treated experimental group proliferated more rapidly than nontreated control group. The experimental group below $5{\mu}g/ml$ Drynariae Rhizoma-treated showed more prominent cell proliferation from the 7th day to the 21st day than the control group and above $10\;{\mu}g/ml$ treated group in RCV. 2. Amount of total protein synthesis was more increased in Drynariae Rhizomatreated group than in control group. In $5{\mu}g/ml$ Drynariae Rhizoma-treated group showed most prominent protein synthesis of the any other exrperimental group and control group. 3. Alkaline phosphatase activity also more increased in Drynariae Rhizomatreated group than control group. 4. Mineralized nodules in Drynariae Rhizoma-treated group were more than not in control group but also in PDGF-treated group. From the above results, Drynariae Rhizoma appeared to enhanced the proliferation, protein synthesis, alkaline phosphatase activity and cellular ability of mineralized nodule formation than PDGF. So that, we conclude that Drynariae Rhizoma enhances the activities of bone cells which have the important role on the periodontal regeneration and optimal application of Drynariae Rhizoma was thought to be useful as the means in bone regeneration.

Natural hydroxyapatite powder was obtained from the calcination of bovine bones and its porous compacts were fabricated by pressureless sintering at 1100 and $1200^{\circ}C$ for 1h. To evaluate and compare their biocompatibility with porosity, we investigated the support of osteoblast cells growth and cytotoxicity using the MG-63 cell line model in vitro. Sintered hydroxyapatite ceramics have a porous microstructure with a relative density of 65 % at $1100^{\circ}C$ and 82 % at $1200^{\circ}C$. Cells adherence to the surface of hydroxyapatite ceramics was observed in a day after the cell culture, and the spreading of cytoplasm around the nucleus was shown after 3 day cell culture. Most of cells were extended to the surface of hydroxyapatite through the wide area. Cell viability was nearly the same till 3 days culturing. But the rate of cell growth is higher in the specimen sintered at $1100^{\circ}C$ than that of $1200^{\circ}C$. It indicates that the porosity is an important factor to enhance the cell viability in the porous hydroxyapatite ceramics derived from bovine bones.
Ferritin an iron-storage protein. is found in bacteria and some animal tissues such as liver, spleen and bone marrow. It is more effective and causes less side reactions than traditional ferrous sulfate, which has been used primarily to treat iron deficiency in pregnancy anemia. Currently, the ferritin extracted from bovine and equine spleens are sold as a commercial product. Its markets are several hundreds of million US dollars. However, because of recent warnings against the viral diseases of animal origins such as mad cow disease, a safer ferritin is sought after. In this study, a production process for human ferritin was successfully developed. The amount of its produced in yeast is high enough to be economically viable.

Our research team has successfully developed a production process for recombinant human ferritin. Its expression titer from yeast is high enough to be economically viable, and its particle formation characteristics are as effective as well.
The aim of this study was to produce a simple and inexpensive technique for estimating the obturator foramen area (OFA) from young calves based on the hypothesis that OFA can be extrapolated from simple linear measurements. Three linear measurements - dorsoventral height, craneocaudal width and total perimeter of obturator foramen - were obtained from 55 bovine hemicoxae. Different algorithms for determining OFA were then produced with a regression analysis (curve fitting) and statistical analysis software. The most simple equation was OFA ($mm^2$) = [3,150.538 + ($36.111^*CW$)] - [147,856.033/DH] (where CW = craneocaudal width and DH = dorsoventral height, both in mm), representing a good nonlinear model with a standard deviation of error for the estimate of 232.44 and a coefficient of multiple determination of 0.846. This formula may be helpful as a repeatable and easily performed estimation of the obturator foramen area in young bovines. The area of the obturator foramen magnum can thus be estimated using this regression formula.
Many countries divide infant formula into special nutrient food and they are in control of thorn very carefully. CODEX prescribes that the components which can be added to infant formula must be exist in the breast milk and the additives must be scientifically proved to be safe. Therefore infant formula manufacturers make efforts to develop infant formula to be similar to human milk based on research of human and bovine milk components. Domestic infant formulas are rich with functional components in comparison with foreign formulas ; such as immunity, anti-allergy, growth factor, developments of brain and digestion organs etc. At this point, progress of bioscience technology and introduction of various new technologies lead micro components in human and bovine milk to be separated and purified. Therefore many functional components are commercialized and infant formula companies use these. Various functional components are added to infant formula ; DHA and arachidonic acid as brain growth components, nucleotide and lactoferrin as immunity increment and oligosaccharides fur digestion. And new infant formula is being developed by using bone growth factor and dehydration components f3r atopy and allergy decrement.

Background and Objectives: The therapeutic strategy for inflammation and degenerative calcification is of utmost importance for bioprosthetic heart valve (BHV) implanted patients. The purpose of this study was to compare the anti-inflammatory and anti-calcification effects of Entelon150® (grape seed extract), losartan, and rosuvastatin, in a rabbit model of intravascular BHV leaflet implantation in bovine pericardium. Methods: A total of 28 rabbits were implanted with BHV leaflet in the external jugular veins. The Entelon150® group was administered 7.7 mg/kg Entelon150® twice daily for 6 weeks after surgery. The losartan and rosuvastatin groups received 5.14 mg/kg and 1 mg/kg, respectively, once per day. The control group received 1 ml of saline once daily. And then, calcium concentration was measured in the implanted BHV, and histological and molecular analyses were performed on the surrounding tissues. Results: The calcium content of the implanted tissue in the Entelon150® group (0.013±0.004 mg/g) was lower than that in the control group (0.066±0.039 mg/g) (p=0.008). The losartan (0.024±0.016 mg/g, p=0.032) and rosuvastatin (0.022±0.011 mg/g, p=0.032) groups had lower calcium content than the control group, and higher tendency than the Entelon150® group. Immunohistochemistry revealed that the expressions of bone morphogenic protein 2 (BMP2), S-100, and angiotensin II type 1 receptor in the Entelon150® group showed lower tendency than those in the control group. The protein expression levels of BMP2 were reduced in the Entelon150® group compared with those in the control group. Conclusions: Entelon150® exhibited a significant effect, similar to other drugs, in reducing calcification and inflammation in the intravascular bovine pericardium.

A process for manufacturing virally-safe porcine bone hydroxyapatite (HA) has been developed to serve as advanced xenograft material for dental applications. Porcine bone pieces were defatted with successive treatments of 30% hydrogen peroxide and 80% ethyl alcohol. The defatted porcine bone pieces were heat-treated in an oxygen atmosphere box furnace at $1,300^{\circ}C$ to remove collagen and organic compounds. The bone pieces were ground with a grinder and then the bone powder was sterilized by gamma irradiation. Morphological characteristics such as SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) and TEM (Transmission Electron Microscopy) images of the resulting porcine bone HA (THE Graft$^{(R)}$) were similar to those of a commercial bovine bone HA (Bio-Oss$^{(R)}$). In order to evaluate the efficacy of $1,300^{\circ}C$ heat treatment and gamma irradiation at a dose of 25 kGy for the inactivation of porcine viruses during the manufacture of porcine bone HA, a variety of experimental porcine viruses including transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV), pseudorabies virus (PRV), porcine rotavirus (PRoV), and porcine parvovirus (PPV) were chosen. TGEV, PRV, PRoV, and PPV were completely inactivated to undetectable levels during the $1,300^{\circ}C$ heat treatment. The mean log reduction factors achieved were $${\geq_-}4.65$$ for TGEV, $${\geq_-}5.81$$ for PRV, $${\geq_-}6.28$$ for PRoV, and $${\geq_-}5.21$$ for PPV. Gamma irradiation was also very effective at inactivating the viruses. TGEV, PRV, PRoV, and PPV were completely inactivated to undetectable levels during the gamma irradiation. The mean log reduction factors achieved were $${\geq_-}4.65$$ for TGEV, $${\geq_-}5.87$$ for PRV, $${\geq_-}6.05$$ for PRoV, and $${\geq_-}4.89$$ for PPV. The cumulative log reduction factors achieved using the two different virus inactivation processes were $${\geq_-}9.30$$ for TGEV, $${\geq_-}11.68$$ for PRV, $${\geq_-}12.33$$ for PRoV, and $${\geq_-}10.10$$ for PPV. These results indicate that the manufacturing process for porcine bone HA from porcine-bone material has sufficient virus-reducing capacity to achieve a high margin of virus safety.
In the present study, the phase velocities of guided ultrasonic waves such as the first arriving signal (FAS) and the slow guided wave (SGW) propagating along the long axis on the 12 tubular cortical bone samples in vitro were measured and their correlations with the cortical thickness were investigated. The phase velocities of the FAS and the SGW were measured by using the axial transmission method in air with a pair of unfocused ultrasonic transducers with a diameter of 12.7 mm and a center frequency of 200 kHz. The phase velocity of the FAS measured at 200 kHz exhibited a very high negative correlation with the cortical thickness and that of the SGW arriving after the FAS showed a high positive correlation with the cortical thickness. The simple and multiple linear regression models with the phase velocities of the FAS and the SGW as independent variables and the cortical thickness as a dependent variable revealed that the coefficient of determination of the multiple linear regression model was higher than those of the simple linear regression models. The phase velocities of the FAS and the SGW measured at 200 kHz on the 12 tubular cortical bone samples were, respectively, consistent with those of the S0 and the A0 Lamb modes calculated at 200 kHz on the cortical bone plate.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the phenomenon of attachment and spreading of the cultured rat calvarial cell inoculated on their surface of different kinds of biodegradable membrane which had been used on tissue regeneration on periodontal defects by using scanning electron microscope. In this experiment 30 Sprague-Dawley male rats (mean BW 150gm) were used to harvest abundant number of cell in the short period. The rats were sacrificed by decapitatioan to obtain the calvaria for bone cell culture. Calvarial cells were cultured with Dulbecco's Modified Essential Medium contained with 10% Fetal Bovine Serum under the conventional conditions. Biodegradable barrier membrane were collected with collagen type, and were divided into 3 different kind of surface such as scattered, polarized and fine-net type as their surface texture. Microcover plate which usually used for cell culture was used as control for smooth surface. All the membrane were seeded with cultured calvarial cell on their surface. The number of cell inoculated on the membrane were $1{\times}10^6$ Cells/ml. After the culture as designed time, all the membrane were washed with 0.1 M Phosphate Buffered saline and fuxed with 2.5% Glutaraldehyde. And all specimen were treated with $OsO_4$, and Tannic acid before drying the cell for coating the cell with gold. Scanning Electron Microscope was used to observation. The following results were obtained. I. During the whole period of experiment, the phenomenon of cell attachment and spreading were revealed similar pattern to compare with smooth surface culture plate and ordinary culture dish. 2. The shape of cell attachment and spreading on the surface of barrier membrane were observed no remarked difference pattern between smooth surface culture plate and ordinary culture dish. 3. The cytoplasmic process of cultured calvaria cell extent to the deep portion of barrier membrane like as their own proper shape. 4. There were no remarkable relationships between the degree of cultured cell spreading and surface structure of barrier membrane. 5. Slight starified layer of cultured calvaria cell were observed on the scattered type of resorbable membrane, Conclusively, this study thus suggest that cultured bone cell inoculated onto the biodegradable barrier membrane may have an important role of carrier for many cell which could be used as new tissue regeneration, and those tissue engeering technique may become an new method in the approach to the repair of bone defects.
